| SUPPORTING FLORIDA’S CHILDREN ON PATHWAYS FOR SUCCESS
By Mary Mayhew
One of the single most effective ways to build a healthy future for Florida’s children is to support a strong foundation from the beginning that contributes to great health and educational success. Parents and families are largely responsible for this foundation and pathway. However, there are many government and nonprofit resources that have been established to complement and support our shared vision for healthy, happy, and thriving children.
While there are many factors that contribute to a child’s healthy and happy future, timely access to high-quality healthcare, developmental and mental health services from birth is essential. It is well understood that children should be kindergarten ready by age 5 and reading proficiently by the end of third grade to support future educational success. Educational success is one of the most effective pathways to reducing poverty, to creating successful independent adults and supporting strong and stable families and thriving communities.
We also fundamentally understand that the love, nurture and support a child receives from birth are essential components to achieving our shared goals for children in our country and state.

DRUGS THAT KILL “ZOMBIE” CELLS MAY BENEFIT SOME OLDER WOMEN, BUT NOT ALL, MAYO CLINIC STUDY FINDS
July 2, 2024 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Drugs that selectively kill senescent cells may benefit otherwise healthy older women but are not a “one-size-fits-all” remedy, Mayo Clinic researchers have found. Specifically, these drugs may only benefit people with a high number of senescent cells, according to findings published today in Nature Medicine.
Senescent cells are malfunctioning cells in the body that lapse into a state of dormancy. These cells, also known as “zombie cells,” can’t divide but can drive chronic inflammation and tissue dysfunction linked to aging and chronic diseases. Senolytic drugs clear tissues of senescent cells.
In the 20-week, phase 2 randomized controlled trial, 60 healthy women past menopause intermittently received a senolytic combination composed of FDA-approved dasatinib and quercetin, a natural product found in some foods. It is the first randomized controlled trial of intermittent senolytic treatment in healthy aging women, and the investigators used bone metabolism as a marker for efficacy.
Researchers found that this combination, known as D+Q, had beneficial effects on bone formation but did not reduce bone resorption or the breakdown and removal of bone tissue. Furthermore, D+Q mainly benefited people with evidence of a high number of senescent cells. This group had more robust increases in bone formation, decreases in bone resorption, and an increase in bone mineral density at the wrist.

FDA APPROVES TREATMENT FOR ADULTS WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
July 2, 2024
ACTION The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Kisunla (donanemab-azbt) injection for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Treatment with Kisunla should be initiated in patients with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia stage of disease, the population in which treatment was studied in the clinical trials.
Kisunla is administered as an intravenous infusion every four weeks. The recommended dosage is detailed in the prescribing information.
DISEASE OR CONDITION
Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder affecting more than 6.5 million Americans that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out simple tasks. While the specific causes of Alzheimer’s are not fully known, it is characterized by changes in the brain—including amyloid beta plaques and neurofibrillary, or tau, tangles—that result in loss of neurons and their connections. These changes affect a person’s ability to remember, think and speak.

VOICES OF ALZHEIMER’S APPLAUDS THE FDA’S APPROVAL OF DONANEMAB FOR EARLY ALZHEIMER’S
Washington, DC, July 2, 2024 – Voices of Alzheimer’s, a national advocacy organization led by people living with Alzheimer’s disease, celebrates the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) decision to grant traditional approval of donanemab, brand name Kisunla, for the treatment of early Alzheimer’s disease. Following last year’s first-ever traditional approval of a drug to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s, today’s decision builds on that progress by providing patients, care partners, and providers with another alternative to care during the early stages of the disease.
Jim Taylor, President & CEO of Voices of Alzheimer’s and husband to Geri, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2012, said, “Today is a day for celebration in the Alzheimer’s community. When doctors diagnosed my wife Geri with Alzheimer’s, there was not a single approved treatment to slow the progression of the disease. Now, a decade later, we have two traditionally approved disease-modifying treatments and further advancements in the pipeline.”

FEMA AND HHS ANNOUNCE RESOURCES AND TIPS TO ADDRESS EXTREME HEAT SWEEPING THE NATION
The agencies are monitoring the risk of extreme heat and providing tips and resources for how to stay safe.
July 3, 2024 – FEMA and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are encouraging everyone to plan and act now to protect themselves against the dangers of heat-related illness and deaths. Extreme heat is the leading cause of death among all weather-related hazards in the U.S., but this health impact is largely preventable. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that at least 1,220 people in the U.S. are killed by heat events each year. Older adults, young children, and those individuals with health conditions, such as asthma or diabetes are at a greater risk for heat-related illnesses.
FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell and ADM Rachel L. Levine, MD, HHS’s Assistant Secretary for Health teamed up to create a PSA highlighting the importance of staying cool, staying informed and being #SummerReady during heat waves.

NIH RESEARCHERS DISCOVER A NEW FACE-DETECTING BRAIN CIRCUIT
The findings in non-human primates could shed light on how our brains develop facial recognition skills.
July 2, 2024 – Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have uncovered a brain circuit in primates that rapidly detects faces. The findings help not only explain how primates sense and recognize faces, but could also have implications for understanding conditions such as autism, where face detection and recognition are often impaired from early childhood. The newly discovered circuit first engages an evolutionarily ancient part of the brain called the superior colliculus, which can then trigger the eyes and head to turn for a better look. This better view enables different brain areas in the temporal cortex to engage in more complex facial recognition. The study was published in the journal Neuron.

PROTEIN ANALYSIS DOES NOT IMPROVE RISK PREDICTIONS FOR CARDIOVASCULAR-RELATED PREGNANCY CONDITIONS
Study with 1,800 first-time moms found no added benefit of screening proteins from blood samples in early pregnancy.
July 3, 2024 – Results from a large study supported by the National Institutes of Health show that protein analyses taken during the first trimester of pregnancy did not improve predictions for identifying people at risk for experiencing conditions related to having high blood pressure during pregnancy. Since there is an urgent need to better predict people at risk for developing conditions related to having high blood pressure during pregnancy, also called hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, researchers have been studying if proteins taken from blood or urine samples could provide this insight. This study provides the largest data to date based on using protein analyses from blood samples during early pregnancy.
