Dr. Dipen Parekh named chief executive officer of UHealth
Parekh, an award-winning COO of UHealth, renowned surgeon scientist, and director of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute has been elevated to lead patient-focused care, biomedical research, and medical education.
June 2, 2025 – The University of Miami Board of Trustees has unanimously selected Dr. Dipen J. Parekh as the next Chief Executive Officer of UHealth, as well as executive vice president for health affairs at the University of Miami, effective immediately. Parekh, a globally renowned urologic oncologist, healthcare innovator, and leader in academic medicine has served as the Chief Operating Officer of the University of Miami Health System since 2020, and alongside University of Miami President Joseph J. Echevarria jointly engineered UHealth’s dramatic turnaround over the last five years.
“Dipen has played a pivotal role each step of the way as the University of Miami Health System has grown into one of the top academic medical centers in the country,” noted Echevarria. “He understands the mission—from the operating room to the classroom to the boardroom—and he embodies the excellence we strive to deliver for our patients, students, and community.”
“As Joe ascended to become president of the University of Miami a year ago, Dipen’s talent, experience, academic pedigree, and work ethic made him the right choice to become CEO of the health system,” Stuart Miller, chair of the UHealth Board of Directors explained to his fellow University of Miami trustees at the annual meeting of its board on May 30. “While Joe will continue to be the president of both the University and UHealth, Dipen will leverage his considerable skills and credibility as a surgeon, clinical leader, and NCI-funded scientist with over 200 peer reviewed publications, to lead the stellar faculty and clinicians at South Florida’s only academic health system, and to enhance our critical community partnership with Jackson Health System.”

Healthcare Staffing Shortages and the Impacts on Provider Reimbursement
By Trevor Biglin
The healthcare industry is facing a critical staffing crisis, with workforce shortages reaching unprecedented levels across hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. This strain has far-reaching implications – not only on patient care and operational efficiency, but also on provider reimbursement.
While much attention has been placed on the lack of physicians, nurses, and other frontline providers, a less visible – but equally impactful – crisis is unfolding behind the scenes: the shortage of qualified registration, coding, billing, claims management specialists.
When providers are understaffed in these critical revenue cycle roles, it can result in errors, delays in claim submissions, and consequently, a surge in denials – all of which negatively impact cash flow and the overall financial health of the provider. A recent report from the American Hospital Association (AHA) outlining the key trends impacting hospital financial stability in 2025 underscores the issue. According to the AHA, labor remains the single largest category of hospital spending.1 In 2024, total compensation and related expenses accounted for 56% of overall hospital costs.2 Billing professionals, like their colleagues on the clinical side, require heightened levels training, education, and qualifications for their staffing. Shortfalls in these areas undoubtedly lead to diminished reimbursement metrics and performance benchmarks.

Broward Health and EllaRae Boutique Celebrate Strength and Beauty at Luncheon for Women Battling Cancer
June 2, 2025 – Broward Health, in collaboration with EllaRae Boutique, recently hosted Bloom and Brunch, an uplifting afternoon celebrating the resilience, beauty and inner strength of 15 women courageously undergoing cancer treatment. They were pampered with an array of self-care experiences, including massages, manicures, makeovers, rejuvenating yoga and expressive art activities.
One of the highlights of the day was when each woman received her custom wig from EllaRae Boutique, which they personally selected in advance. At the luncheon, Priscilla Diaz, founder and owner of EllaRae Boutique, fitted each woman with her chosen wig, offering them not only a beautiful accessory but also a powerful boost of confidence.
“The inspiration behind this was deeply personal,” said Diaz, who was diagnosed with the autoimmune condition, Hashimoto’s disease, which led to the thinning of her hair and a change in its texture. Seeing my hair change was devastating to me. I purchased a wig, and it made me realize how empowering it is to feel confident in your appearance. It also made me realize that wearing a wig is totally okay. I wanted to help women feel whole again, feel beautiful again and feel confident again. And for me, this event is one powerful way to do that.”

“When I got the call about where I thought these donations would have the most impact, I immediately thought of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital,” said Rita Case. “For children, coming to the hospital can be very frightening for them. We want them to feel at home and be comforted while they are here. That’s what makes this donation so important.”
Patients received toys, puzzles, shoes and blankets, along with beautiful, colorful handmade quilts. Students throughout the country submitted artwork for the quilts that were then made by the loving hands of women throughout the U.S. who weaved the artwork into the quilts, which are donated by One More Child.

FHA: Gov. DeSantis vetoed House Bill 6017, Recovery of Damages for Medical Negligence Resulting in Death, preserving quality, accessible and affordable health care in Florida
May 29, 2025 – The Florida Hospital Association (FHA) applauds Governor Ron DeSantis for vetoing today House Bill 6017, Recovery of Damages for Medical Negligence Resulting in Death. The legislation, if signed into law, would threaten timely access to care and exacerbate healthcare affordability as lawsuits and nuclear settlements increase and physicians move to other states to practice.
Following the announcement, Mary C. Mayhew, president and CEO of the Florida Hospital Association, issued the following statement:
“Floridians rely on a strong, stable health care workforce – whether it’s a mom delivering her baby, an elderly man managing a chronic condition or a family in a rural town seeking care close to home. Under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida has made great strides in bolstering its health care workforce and expanding access to care. With a projected shortage of 18,000 doctors by 2035, it’s more important now than ever to recruit and retain doctors to care for our communities. If HB 6017 were signed into law, it would risk access to care with physicians choosing to practice in other states because of the constant threat of lawsuits in Florida and by further driving up the cost of care with skyrocketing nuclear settlements. The Florida Hospital Association commends Governor DeSantis for vetoing HB 6017, putting the health and well-being of Floridians first and safeguarding the future of Florida’s health care delivery system.”

ASCO: New antibody-drug conjugate shows promising safety and response rates for patients with rare blood cancer Blastic plasmacytoid dendric cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare, aggressive blood cancer that often involves the bone marrow, skin and, sometimes, lymph nodes.
First-in-class antibody-drug conjugate, pivekimab sunirine (PVEK), was safe and effective.
PVEK achieved an overall response rate of 85% and complete response rate of 70% as frontline treatment in newly diagnosed patients with BPDCN.
Findings suggest this treatment should be considered as a new standard of care for these patients.
ABSTRACT: 6502
CHICAGO, JUNE 2, 2025 ― The first-in-class antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) pivekimab sunirine (PVEK) demonstrated promising efficacy and high response rates for patients with blastic plasmacytoid dendric cell neoplasm (BPDCN), according to data from a Phase I/II study led by researchers from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
These results suggest that PVEK should be considered a potential new standard treatment option for patients with BPDCN, a rare, aggressive blood cancer that involves the skin, bone marrow and lymph nodes.
Findings from the CADENZA study were presented today at the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting by Naveen Pemmaraju, M.D., professor of Leukemia, who led the trial together with Naval Daver, M.D., professor of Leukemia.
As a frontline treatment in 33 newly diagnosed patients with BPDCN, researchers observed an overall response rate of 85%, including a complete response rate of 70% with a median overall survival of 16.6 months.

Study uncovers novel role for BRCA2, suggesting new therapeutic strategies
June 2, 2025 – BRCA2, a key tumor suppressor that helps repair and protect DNA during replication, is often mutated in cancer cells. Normally, BRCA2 interacts with another protein, RAD51, to suppress genomic instability by fixing damage at DNA breaks or by protecting DNA at stalled replication forks, which can occur during DNA replication. By examining the protein structure of a specific region of BRCA2, known as the C-terminal end, researchers led by Katharina Schlacher, Ph.D., and John Tainer, Ph.D., uncovered a new function for BRCA2 that challenges the current understanding. The researchers discovered that BRCA2 C-terminal end acts as a clamp to reshape RAD51 so it can bind to DNA structure at replication forks, which differs from their interactions at DNA breaks and suggests that BRCA2 regulates two separate genome stability pathways. Restoring either of these pathways in BRCA-defective cancer cells can cause resistance to cancer therapy, therefore these findings suggest that both pathways need to be targeted in order to overcome resistance. ‘Eye’ on Health: AI Detects Dizziness and Balance Disorders Remotely
FAU researchers are also experimenting with a wearable headset equipped with deep learning capabilities to detect nystagmus in real-time.
FAU’s Eye-tracking Tool Offers New Lens to Diagnose Neurological, Vestibular Conditions
June 4, 2025 – Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly vital role in modern medicine, particularly in interpreting medical images to help clinicians assess disease severity, guide treatment decisions and monitor disease progression. Despite these advancements, most current AI models are based on static datasets, limiting their adaptability and real-time diagnostic potential.
To address this gap, researchers from Florida Atlantic University and collaborators, have developed a novel proof-of-concept deep learning model that leverages real-time data to assist in diagnosing nystagmus – a condition characterized by involuntary, rhythmic eye movements often linked to vestibular or neurological disorders.
Gold-standard diagnostic tools such as videonystagmography (VNG) and electronystagmography have been used to detect nystagmus. However, these methods come with notable drawbacks: high costs (with VNG equipment often exceeding $100,000), bulky setups, and inconvenience for patients during testing. FAU’s AI-driven system offers a cost-effective and patient-friendly alternative, for a quick and reliable screening for balance disorders and abnormal eye movements.

Learn CPR this summer – you just might save a life
American Heart Association offers summer safety checklist for families ahead of CPR & AED Awareness Week, June 1-7
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. May 27, 2025 — Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast schools are out for the summer, and the American Heart Association is calling on parents and families to learn Hands-Only CPR so this summer break can be as safe as it is fun.
More than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States each year[1], and 90% of people who have a cardiac arrest will not survive.
According to the American Heart Association, more than 23,000 children experience cardiac arrest each year, with nearly 40% related to sports and nearly 20% occurring in infants. If performed immediately, CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival, yet less than half of people actually receive the help they need from a bystander. With school out for summer, children will be away from teachers and coaches who might be trained in CPR, making it crucial for parents to know this life-saving skill.
