The Pembroke Pines development will offer housing and on-site medical and social services for low- and moderate-income seniors in Broward County.

The ceremony, which included Broward County Mayor Lamar P. Broward County is one of the most unaffordable places to live in America with 61.9% of renter households categorized as cost-burdened and seniors, who live on fixed incomes, are one of the most affected demographics.

MIAMI CANCER INSTITUTE CLINICAL TRIAL ADMINISTERS TARGETED CHEMOTHERAPY DIRECTLY TO PANCREATIC CANCER TUMORS
Novel procedure minimizes side effects and toxicity while extending overall survival in patients with unresectable, locally advanced pancreatic cancer
May 22, 2023 – Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, is currently enrolling participants in a Phase III clinical trial for patients with unresectable, locally advanced pancreatic cancer. The trial studies a novel delivery method for chemotherapy (gemcitabine) directly into the pancreatic tumor’s surroundings, thereby minimizing the toxicity and side effects of the treatment. The outpatient procedure delivers the chemotherapy intra-arterially using two balloons that are inflated next to the tumor, thereby avoiding the circulation of the chemotherapy to other parts of the body,
“The interim results of this trial, which we presented at this year’s AACR annual meeting, have been very promising,” said Antonio Ucar, M.D. an oncologist/hematologist at Miami Cancer Institute, who is leading the trial at the Center. “We saw that the procedure significantly minimized the side effects of the chemotherapy, which can be quite significant in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. Even more impressive is that we saw a significant increase in overall survival – 16 months among those who were in the experimental arm versus 10 months in the control arm of the study.”

MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM WARNS OF HIGH PREECLAMPSIA RATES IN SOUTH FLORIDA PREGNANT WOMEN: LAUNCHES OB HYPERTENSION NAVIGATOR PROGRAM TO IMPROVE OUTCOMES
May 19, 2023 – Memorial Healthcare System is warning that the number of pregnant and postpartum women with high blood pressure in South Florida is significantly higher than the national average. Preeclampsia, a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, is affecting 9.4% of maternity patients at Memorial’s three birthing hospitals, more than double the national average of 4.2% over the past 30 years. Because of health disparities, the risk to women of color is especially high, particularly vulnerable are non-Hispanic Black women with additional risk factors such as being over 35 years of age, having late or no prenatal care, and experiencing obesity and other complications.
“Raising awareness about a problem such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease in pregnant and postpartum women can make the difference between life and death,” said Dr. Juan Carlos Brenes, Medical Director of Clinical Cardiology at Memorial Cardiovascular Institute. He furthers explains that preeclampsia can present in different ways and women should remain vigilant during pregnancy and after they deliver the baby.
Preeclampsia poses a life-threatening risk to both the mother and unborn child and increases the risk of cardiac complications later in life. Currently, there is no known cure for preeclampsia during pregnancy other than delivery of the baby and placenta in the hope that the mother’s blood pressure may subside.

TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL PERFORMS FIRST LIVING DONOR LIVER TRANSPLANT ON THE WEST COAST OF FLORIDA
Living donation will expand access to lifesaving liver transplantation for patients with end-stage liver disease and liver cancer.
May 23, 2023 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH), one of the nation’s top 10 transplant centers, wrote a new chapter in its history earlier this month with its first living donor liver transplant, which also is the first such surgery on Florida’s west coast.
Previous liver transplants at the hospital have utilized livers from deceased donors. In living donor liver transplantation, a healthy person donates a portion of their liver to an individual with a poorly functioning liver. After the portion is removed, the donor’s remaining liver regrows to near its full size and capacity within a couple of months after surgery. The transplanted liver portion grows and restores normal liver function in the recipient.
“Our living donor liver transplant program is a prime example of Tampa General continuing to drive innovation to deliver world-class health care,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General. “This program opens up additional access to patients in need of a liver transplant and has the potential to transform the lives of patients and their families in the Tampa Bay region, Florida and across the United States.”
Dr. Kiran Dhanireddy, vice president and chief of the TGH Transplant Institute and surgical director of the Comprehensive Liver Disease and Transplant Center at the TGH Transplant Institute, performed the recipient operation. “Living donor liver transplant is another avenue to save more lives of patients with liver disease in our community,” Dhanireddy said. “The profound generosity of living donors circumvents the need for extended periods of time to gain access to lifesaving transplantation.”

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES!
May 23, 2023 – As a medical assistant in a Broward Health Physician Group pediatrician’s office, Jaimee Joseph helps keep children in our community healthy.
She is a great role model for the patients and families she serves, having faced and overcome her own health challenges battling with obesity. Thanks to gastric bypass surgery just over a year ago, she’s lost 90 pounds and feels like a new person.
For years before her surgery, Joseph had concerns about her weight and how it was impacting her health. She was diagnosed as pre-diabetic and before her surgery, her body mass index (BMI) was 44. BMI is a measure of body fat levels based on a height-to-weight ratio and Joseph’s measure indicated she was obese.
Despite knowing that the extra weight wasn’t good for her health, Joseph didn’t think she was overweight enough to qualify for bariatric surgery. This is a common misperception.
Then in October 2021, Joseph began working in the office of Chi Zhang, M.D., the medical director of the bariatric program at Broward Health Imperial Point. She learned about the different bariatric procedures and heard from real patients about their experiences. She even attended support group meetings before deciding that gastric bypass surgery was the best option for her.

NAMI MIAMI-DADE’S THIRD ANNUAL WALK FOR MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DRAWS MORE THAN 2,000 TO LOAN DEPOT PARK
The Walk raised more than $300,000, exceeding its fundraising goal and demonstrating the increased need for mental health services in Miami and the Florida Keys
May 23, 2023 – With more than 2,000 participants and 208 teams, the Walk for Mental Health Awareness hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Miami-Dade on Saturday, May 20 at Loan Depot Park raised funds for free support groups, peer mentoring, outreach and adult and youth educational programs and the Help Line.
“Considering this is only our second in person Walk event and the fact that the Walk continues to grow in attendance and fundraising, speaks to the tremendous need in our community,” according to NAMI Miami-Dade CEO & President, Susan Holtzman. “We are proud that we exceeded our fundraising goal of $275,000 by $50,000, because this will only enable NAMI’s continued growth in Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys. More is always needed. Donations remain open through June 15,” she said.
Statistics show the need for mental health resources in our community. Approximately 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness in a given year, and according to the CDC and Gallup, mental unwellness due to the pandemic has created a suicide crisis in teens and a workplace crisis for employers. The Journal of the American Medical Association recently reported that between 2011-2020 ER visits for suicide related issues rose fivefold among children, teens and young adults.

MIRACLES BENEFITTING GOLISANO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL HAPPEN EVERY TIME YOU SHOP AT COSTCO IN MAY: 10 DAYS LEFT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
May 22, 2023 — There are 10 days left to help kids like 11-year-old Jaxson Warren through the Miracles Campaign at Costco.
Diagnosed with B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the summer of 2020, Jaxson began chemotherapy at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. He finished six months later. Jaxson smiled from ear-to-ear as he rang the ceremonial end-of-chemo bell to symbolize that he was done with chemo and only required check-ups. Children are given a bell to decorate when they start chemo, so they can look forward to ringing it on their last day of treatment. Jaxson decorated his in honor of his favorite sports team, the Kansas City Chiefs.
Halfway through the campaign, which began May 1, Costco stores in Southwest Florida have raised more than $115,000 for Golisano Children’s Hospital through Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. As a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals partner, Golisano Children’s Hospital receives support from its affiliated fundraising campaigns, like the Costco Miracles Campaign.

AMA APPLAUDS SURGEON GENERAL ADVISORY ON SOCIAL MEDIA
“With near universal social media use by America’s young people, these apps and sites introduce profound risk and mental health harms in ways we are only now beginning to fully understand. As physicians, we see firsthand the impact of social media, particularly during adolescence – a critical period of brain development. As we grapple with the growing, but still insufficient, research and evidence in this area, we applaud the Surgeon General for issuing this important Advisory to highlight this issue and enumerate concrete steps stakeholders can take to address concerns and protect the mental health and wellbeing of children and adolescents.
“We continue to believe in the positive benefits of social media, but we also urge safeguards and additional study of the positive and negative biological, psychological, and social effects of social media.”

CLEVELAND CLINIC-LED TRIAL SHOWS DUAL-CHAMBER LEADLESS PACEMAKER SYSTEM TO BE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE FOR PATIENTS WITH HEART RHYTHM ISSUES
Cleveland Clinic Previously Performed First Implant of Dual-Chamber Leadless Pacemaker in United States
May 20, 2023 – Findings from a Cleveland Clinic-led clinical trial which assessed the safety and performance of a dual-chamber leadless pacemaker system in humans showed that the device met the primary safety and performance study goals and provided heart pacing support and reliable timing between atrial and ventricular activity for 3 months after implantation.
Findings were presented today during a Late Breaking Clinical Trials and Science Session at Heart Rhythm 2023, the Heart Rhythm Society’s 44th annual meeting in New Orleans and simultaneously published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
In March 2022, Cleveland Clinic successfully implanted the dual-chamber leadless pacemaker system in the first patient in the United States as part of the global clinical trial, which aimed to offer heart rhythm patients a more targeted approach through a less invasive procedure with fewer complications.
The multi-center pivotal study enrolled up to 550 patients with abnormal heart rhythms at up to 85 sites worldwide. From February through August 2022, a total of 300 enrolled patients underwent an implantation attempt across 55 centers in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The study evaluated the safety, performance and effectiveness of The Aveir™ leadless pacemaker system, developed by Abbott.

New HHS proposal would shed light on cost of prescription drugs and save states and federal government money in Medicaid
May 23, 2023- The Biden-Harris Administration has made lowering prescription drug costs in America a key priority — and President Biden is continuing to deliver results. Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is proposing steps to further drive down prescription drug costs in Medicaid and build on President Biden’s executive order to lower prescription drug costs for Americans. CMS’ latest notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) would shed light on the actual cost of drugs covered by Medicaid. Under this proposal, Medicaid would have increased ability to hold drug manufacturers accountable for what Medicaid programs pay for drugs.
