Legislative Preview: Hospitals’ Priorities for Advancing Florida’s Health Care System
By Mary C. Mayhew
The 2025 regular legislative session does not start until March 4, but there are interim committee meetings already underway, and bill filing is ongoing. In addition, with Gov. Ron DeSantis calling for a special legislative session before March to address several issues relevant to hospitals, including immigration and hurricane recovery, the hospital industry is already engaged, raising their collective, united voice to continue advancing policy priorities needed to support modern, accessible health care for all Floridians.
Florida is diverse, and no hospital serves the same community. That’s why regulatory flexibility, not one-size-fits-all mandates, are essential to support their work to meet their communities’ care needs. They also need stable, predictable, and fair reimbursement and for their payer partners to adhere to clear, transparent, and reasonable standards for authorization and for payment.
Building on the state’s landmark health care investments during the 2024 legislative session, chiefly with the robust Live Healthy legislative package, Florida’s hospitals are united around several key policy priorities to continue improving Medicaid hospital reimbursements and enhancing outcomes for children and adults, strengthening and supporting our health care workforce, increasing payor accountability, enhancing behavioral health care, and reforming the medical malpractice system.

State-of-the-Art Intraoperative 3D Imaging Now Offered at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital
January 8, 2025 -The Medtronic O-arm® StealthStation® S8® Surgical System for Neurosurgery, an intraoperative 2D/3D imaging device, is among the many innovative surgical technologies that are enhancing the patient care experience within the newly opened Nicklaus Children’s Kenneth C. Griffin Surgical Tower.
The technology, which is used primarily for pediatric brain and spine surgeries, displays powerful 3D images of the patient’s anatomy during surgery. When used in combination with a surgical navigation system, surgeons can view in real-time the location of implant devices relative to the patient’s anatomy, confirming optimal placement of hardware while surgery is in progress. Prior to acquiring the surgical system for neurosurgery, imaging to confirm placement of device implants was typically performed after surgery.
Nicklaus Children’s Hospital will be the first pediatric facility in the Southeast to offer a unique feature to the Medtronic O-arm® StealthStation® S8®, Spine Smart Dose. This technology uses machine learning with existing O-arm™ images to reduce radiation by up to 70 percent in cases for both patients and clinical staff. The new system will be used in spine and cranial cases as well as neuro plastic operations.

Cleveland Clinic Survey: Many Americans Unaware of Heart Health Risks, Skip Medication Doses
Approximately 40% of Americans do not recognize the dangers of alcohol consumption, tobacco use, and sleep deprivation
February 4, 2025- A new Cleveland Clinic national survey found that many people do not know certain habits can potentially harm their heart health and increase their risk for heart disease.
While 74% of Americans are aware that stress can negatively impact heart health, about 40% do not recognize that alcohol consumption and lack of sleep also can have detrimental effects on the heart. Additional factors Americans reported not knowing may impact heart health include:
Tobacco consumption (40%) Air pollution (62%) Supplements/vitamins (90%)
“Each year we aim to educate the public about lesser-known heart risks and encourage individuals to be proactive in managing their cardiovascular health,” said Samir Kapadia, M.D., chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic.
“By emphasizing the importance of a healthy lifestyle and diet, and understanding family history and genetic factors, we aim to empower people to make informed decisions that could help prevent heart disease.”
The survey found almost all Americans believe supplements can improve heart health (97%). While 92% of Americans said they currently take vitamins or supplements or have taken these in the past, of those respondents, only 38% take supplements to support heart health. Some of the top supplements Americans currently take or have taken to support heart health include a multivitamin, vitamin D and fish oil.

Leon Medical Centers Launches Medical Excellence and Innovation Series with Groundbreaking Surgical Training Showcase at FIU
February 4, 2025 – Leon Medical Centers Founder and Chairman Benjamin Leon, Jr. convened renowned experts, including Dr. Ahmed Ghazi and Dr. Mohammad E. Allaf from Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Brady Urological Institute, and Dr. Juan Cendan, Dean of FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and Senior Vice President for Health Affairs at FIU, for a live demonstration of a trailblazing 3D printing technology. This innovation is transforming surgical training and enhancing patient outcomes at Johns Hopkins Medicine, one of the nation’s premier medical institutions.
Held at FIU’s Anatomy Lab, the event showcased Dr. Ghazi’s patented system, a revolutionary approach to surgical training. The system creates lifelike anatomical replicas tailored to individual patients, made from a unique blend of hard plastic and gelatin-like materials. These replicas closely mimic the structure and texture of human organs, complete with functional veins and arteries that bleed. By allowing surgeons to practice complex procedures in hyper-realistic simulations, the technology reduces errors and enhances surgical success rates.
“When introduced to this technology, I was truly awed by its potential,” said Mr. Leon, Jr. “It is a game changer for both surgeons and the future surgeons. I felt it was important to share this innovation with South Florida’s medical community.”
