Importance of Hydration and Tips to Keeping Kids Hydrated During the Summer

As summer approaches, kids will be spending more time outdoors playing, exploring, and staying active under the sun! Between backyard adventures, sports camps, and pool days, warmer weather and increased outdoor time mean their hydration needs naturally rise.

Unlike adults, children don’t always recognize the signs of thirst until they’re already dehydrated. Staying well-hydrated helps our children maintain a healthy body temperature, stay focused in their activities, and keep their energy up throughout the day. Even mild dehydration can impact a child’s mood, ability to concentrate, and physical performance. That’s why it’s important to be proactive in helping children meet their fluid needs. Below are some helpful strategies to keep your child hydrated and healthy all summer long.

1. Make Water the “Go-To” Choice
Kids are more likely to drink water regularly if it’s easily accessible and personalized. Let them choose a water bottle that they’re excited to carry around. Make it a habit to pack a filled water bottle anytime you leave the house, you’re headed to the park, a family outing, or just running errands.

2. Flavor It Naturally
Sometimes kids avoid plain water because they find it boring. That’s where natural flavor infusions can make hydration fun! Add slices of fruit like strawberries, oranges, lemons, or watermelon to their water bottles. You can even get your child involved by letting them “design” their own water flavor of the day. Frozen fruit cubes are another fun option that cools the drink while adding flavor and visual appeal.

A NEW WEAPON IN THE FIGHT AGAINST HEART FAILURE

Memorial Using Tech to Help Patients Monitor Vitals at Home

June 27, 2025 – A 30-second, at-home test can alert those with pre-existing cardiac conditions to abnormalities within their heart before the onset of any symptoms. The intracardiac data it generates enables caregivers to clinically intervene before the problem escalates, potentially saving individuals with structural heart disease from a life-threatening incident.

Hemotag, from Boca Raton-based Aventusoft, is applied to the chest and captures vibrations from three locations that assess valve signatures, cardiac pressure, and function. It provides a real-time assessment, and warning, when necessary, for those living with heart failure, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, other cardiomyopathies, and atrial fibrillation.

A clinical trial hosted by Memorial Cardiac & Vascular Institute led to the facility being the first in Florida to add Hemotag to its remote patient monitoring program and is being credited for helping one chronically-ill man reach his 90th birthday. “We’ve already published studies about two of our cases, and have others whose vitals we’re monitoring with this technology,” said Dr. Iani Patsias, a Memorial Healthcare System physician specializing in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology. “It’s a non-invasive way to get information that helps us keep acute cases from requiring hospitalization.”

Jupiter Medical Center Among First in Florida to Offer VARIPULSETM Pulsed Field Ablation to Treat Atrial Fibrillation

June 25, 2025- Jupiter Medical Center is proud to offer the innovative VARIPULSETM platform to deliver pulsed field ablation to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib), making it one of the first health care facilities in Florida to provide this advanced procedure. This revolutionary approach represents a significant leap forward in AFib treatment, a condition characterized by an uncontrolled fluttering or irregular heartbeat, providing patients with a safer, faster, and highly effective option.

Instead of using tiny probes to burn or freeze the defective tissue inside the heart, doctors are now utilizing a method that involves a new type of energy delivery that is ‘minimally thermal.’ This treatment option may be safer for patients as it is less likely to injure tissue in and around the heart. Additionally, this device integrates into 3-D mapping systems to treat atrial fibrillation so ablations can be performed using pulse field technology, eliminating the need for X-rays.

Partial Match Parity: Increasing the Donor Pool for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

A new study shows that blood cancer patients who may have previously struggled to find a donor for transplantation now have more options. These findings should expand the donor pool for patients who have difficulty finding a full match, said Antonio Jimenez Jimenez, M.D., senior author and a physician-scientist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Blood cancer patients who need transplantation but have trouble finding a full match now have more options
June 26, 2025– Blood cancer patients who may have previously struggled to find a donor for transplantation now have more options.

A new study shows that patients achieve good outcomes with a partial match drawn from the national public registry of donors when they are treated with the immune-suppressing drug cyclophosphamide. Survival rates at one year were on par with rates seen in other studies with fully matched donors.

Think before you light — doctors urge caution with fireworks

Burns are the most common fireworks injury.

June 26, 2025 – As our nation celebrates Independence Day, emergency room doctors say fireworks can be a fun part of your 4th of July festivities with appropriate safety precautions. This is especially important for teens, who have the highest rate of ER-treated fireworks injuries, and young children 5-9, with the second highest rate of ER visits related to fireworks.

“Fireworks are a long-standing tradition for many Americans this time of year, but they should be handled with care,” said Dr. Michael Falgiani, HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. “Children and teens have the highest rates of emergency visits for fireworks injuries, so we ask parents not to let children play with or light fireworks. Even sparklers, which at about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, can cause very serious burns.”

According to the most recent data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks-related injuries sent nearly 10,000 people nationwide to the ER and caused eight deaths in 2023. Burns accounted for more than 40% of the injuries. The study showed an estimated 800 emergency department-treated injuries associated with firecrackers and 700 with sparklers. Injuries to the hands and fingers accounted for more than a third of ER visits, and injuries to the head, face and neck accounted for about 22%.

Mayo Clinic’s AI tool identifies 9 dementia types, including Alzheimer’s, with one scan

June 27, 2025 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool that helps clinicians identify brain activity patterns linked to nine types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, using a single, widely available scan — a transformative advance in early, accurate diagnosis.

The tool, StateViewer, helped researchers identify the dementia type in 88% of cases, according to research published online on June 27, 2025, in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. It also enabled clinicians to interpret brain scans nearly twice as fast and with up to three times greater accuracy than standard workflows. Researchers trained and tested the AI on more than 3,600 scans, including images from patients with dementia and people without cognitive impairment.

Mayo: Dopamine menus: Give your brain some space

June 26, 2025 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — You likely are accustomed to encountering a range of menus in daily life, but there is one that may be new to you: a dopamine menu. Dr. Robert Wilfahrt, a family medicine physician at Mayo Clinic and an expert in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, explains.

“A dopamine menu is a rebranding of what psychologists or healthcare professionals previously called behavioral activation — ways to get yourself to do what’s best for you, instead of what you feel like doing in the moment,” Dr. Wilfahrt says.

In this case, the best route to getting that tough task done is to step away from it for a minute, do something else that feeds you energy and then dive back into the task.

The purpose? To stimulate dopamine — a hormone and neurotransmitter in the brain involved in mood, attention, reward and motivation. It’s also known as the “feel-good hormone.” Dopamine comes in many forms — reaching for your phone to doomscroll social media is an easy and convenient way to get a bit of a lift, but that’s not the only option. What other accessible activities can bring you joy and a happy brain break?

WHO Scientific advisory group issues report on origins of COVID-19

June 27, 2025 – The WHO Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO), a panel of 27 independent, international, multidisciplinary experts, today published its report on the origins of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.

SAGO has advanced the understanding of the origins of COVID-19, but as they say in their report, much of the information needed to evaluate fully all hypotheses has not been provided.

“I thank each of the 27 members of SAGO for dedicating their time and expertise to this very important scientific undertaking over more than three years,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “As things stand, all hypotheses must remain on the table, including zoonotic spillover and lab leak. We continue to appeal to China and any other country that has information about the origins of COVID-19 to share that information openly, in the interests of protecting the world from future pandemics.”

OCR Investigates Minnesota for Allowing Males to Compete in Sports Reserved for Females

June 26, 2025 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announces an investigation of the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota State High School League (Minnesota) under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX).  The investigation will examine whether Minnesota engaged in discrimination on the basis of sex by allowing male athletes to compete on sports teams reserved for females.

OCR enforces Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sex discrimination in education programs and activities of HHS funding recipients, such as the Minnesota Department of Education.  The Minnesota Department of Education has delegated responsibility over interscholastic sports competitions to the Minnesota State High School League, and as a result, it must also comply with Title IX.

CBN and Parkinson’s: Can It Help with Tremors and Motor Symptoms?

June 27, 2025 – Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. While treatments have improved over the years, many patients still struggle with tremors, muscle rigidity, and sleep disturbances — symptoms that can significantly reduce quality of life.
As cannabis gains attention for its potential therapeutic effects, some individuals are turning to lesser-known cannabinoids like CBN (cannabinol) in hopes of finding relief. Often marketed as a sleep aid with calming properties, CBN is now being explored for its role in neurological health — including possible applications for Parkinson’s disease.

But does the science support this interest? In this article, we’ll look at how CBN works, what early research suggests about its effect on motor symptoms, and what people with Parkinson’s should know before considering it.

What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive disorder of the central nervous system that primarily affects motor function. It develops when nerve cells in the brain — particularly those in the substantia nigra — become damaged or die, leading to a significant decrease in dopamine levels. Dopamine is a critical neurotransmitter involved in regulating movement, coordination, and mood.
