Forever Grateful For Our Lifesaving Partnership

November  2024- It was wonderful and very special to have the support of so many at our 12th annual gala, celebrating 23 years of saving the lives of the most innocent and helpless among us, newborns. I am sending you this personal note to express how truly grateful we are for our “Lifesaving Partnership” and for your continued support.

The highlight of the evening was seeing the re-union of Gloria Hope, now 21-years old, with the firefighters that received her and the message from Safe Haven baby “Milagros” now 19-years old. It touched every heart. I know it did mine.

We believed from the beginning 23 years ago that if we saved only one life from the ultimate in infant abuse — abandonment — all our efforts would be worthwhile and that was 412 precious lives ago (402 in Florida, nine in other states & one little one in the country of Honduras). And… we have assisted over 6,000 girls/woman in their time of need/crisis, helped six moms reclaimed their parental rights; 74 moms chose direct adoption with an agency of their choice.

Statement from Secretary Xavier Becerra on New Data Showing Continued Low Uninsurance Rate

November 10, 2024 – Today, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra released the following statement about newly released data – PDF showing that the historic decline in the number of uninsured Americans on this Administration’s watch is holding steady:
“More people have health insurance coverage than ever before – and the peace of mind that comes with it. That is all thanks to the Affordable Care Act’s expansion of Medicaid and creation of the Marketplace. Along with Social Security, and Medicare, the ACA is one of the most consequential social investments in the history of our nation. The Biden-Harris Administration has worked tirelessly to ensure quality, affordable health care for everyone. Now Congress must do its job and make sure ACA tax credits in the American Rescue Plan for working families stay in place. Every single American can go to the doctor and get the care they need without breaking the bank.”

Researchers uncover new role of mutant proteins in some of the deadliest cancers

Findings could point to new ways to treat RAS-driven cancers.

November 12, 2024 – Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and their collaborators have discovered a new way in which RAS genes, which are commonly mutated in cancer, may drive tumor growth beyond their well-known role in signaling at the cell surface. Mutant RAS, they found, helps to kick off a series of events involving the transport of specific nuclear proteins that lead to uncontrolled tumor growth, according to a study published Nov. 11, 2024, in Nature Cancer.

RAS genes are the second most frequently mutated genes in cancer, and mutant RAS proteins are key drivers of some of the deadliest cancers, including nearly all pancreatic cancers, half of colorectal cancers, and one-third of lung cancers. Decades of research have shown that mutant RAS proteins promote the development and growth of tumors by activating specific proteins at the cell surface, creating a constant stream of signals telling cells to grow.
