NEW HOPE FOR SOLID TUMOR CANCER PATIENTS Research Study at Memorial Cancer Institute Offers the Potential of T-Cell Therapy
October 19, 2023 – Cancer patients whose disease has been resistant to traditional chemotherapy drugs and/or metastasized within their body may be eligible for an immunotherapy that has been successful in the treatment of blood cancers.
Memorial Cancer Institute, one of only seven designated Cancer Centers of Excellence in Florida, is hosting a research study that will utilize CAR-T cell therapy against solid tumors in the head and neck, lungs, and skin.
The T-cell immunotherapy has demonstrated success in specific blood cancers, like acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and select non-Hodgkin lymphomas, boasting response rates of 50% to exceeding 70% in clinical trials. Notably, CAR-T therapy represents a dynamic frontier in cancer treatment, with ongoing research and evolving clinical outcomes shaping its trajectory.
“In our Cancer Center of Excellence, we offer diverse opportunities for patient participation in cutting-edge clinical trials, contingent on research protocols and medical evaluation,” said Dr. Andres Alvarez, MD, PhD, Director, Oncology Research at Memorial Healthcare System. “Our clinical research focus includes the search for specific HLA-typed cells in solid tumor CAR-T clinical studies, as well as numerous other novel research opportunities. Our commitment to state-of-the-art oncology research is driven by cell therapies, pioneering developments in new treatment options for solid tumors, personalized medicine, genetics, biobanking, and treating patients with precision medicine. Novel types of immunotherapy, like reengineered T cells (CAR-T and TIL therapies) and other medical research advances, are part of this approach.”

10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE GETTING YOUR FIRST MAMMOGRAM
October 19, 2023 – A mammogram is a crucial test that helps detect breast cancer early, which can save lives by finding any problems at the earliest stage possible. However, the idea of getting a mammogram can be scary, especially if it’s your first time. Knowing what to expect can help calm your nerves and make sure you’re ready. It’s important to remember that the actual procedure is usually quick, and most people only feel a little discomfort. Talking to your doctor about any questions or worries before your appointment can give you the information and reassurance you need. Here are ten important things to know before getting a mammogram.
1. Mammograms save lives.
Mammograms play a crucial role in the early detection of breast cancer. They can identify abnormalities or changes in breast tissue that are often too small or subtle to be felt. This allows for earlier intervention, which significantly improves treatment options and the likelihood of a successful recovery. The National Cancer Institute estimates that mammography has helped reduce breast cancer mortality rates by 40% since 1990. It’s vital to understand that postponing your mammogram can delay the detection of potential issues. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms or discomfort, regular mammograms should be part of your healthcare routine. Remember, early detection is the best defense against breast cancer.
2. Your menstrual cycle can affect mammogram results.
Scheduling your mammogram for the week following your menstrual period can help ensure the most accurate results. This is due to the natural fluctuations in hormonal levels and breast tissue density that occur during different stages of the menstrual cycle. In the week following your period, hormonal levels are relatively low and breast tissue is less dense, improving the clarity of mammogram images and making it easier to detect any abnormalities. It’s also worth noting that having a mammogram during this time can minimize any potential discomfort, as breasts tend to be less tender after menstruation.

OVARIAN CANCER SURVIVOR IS LIVING HER BEST LIFE FOLLOWING TREATMENT AT BROWARD HEALTH
Broward Health urges women not to ignore subtle signs and symptoms
October 20, 2023 – Ovarian cancer is the second most prevalent gynecological cancer in the United States. Being known as the “silent killer,” it is vital for women to acknowledge the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Dr. Scott Jordan, a gynecologic oncologist with the Broward Health Physician Group, urges women to be vigilant and take note of any potential signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer.
“Women may only experience symptoms that they think are not severe enough to seek medical attention, such as bloating, fullness, abdominal pain and an increased need to urinate,” Dr. Jordan said. “Early detection saves lives, so we have to listen to our bodies.”
Dr. Jordan’s patient, Maria Grajcer, lost her appetite for two months, but it never occurred to her that it was serious, let alone that ovarian cancer was a possibility.

The idea was to connect with local hospitals and healthcare facilities to collect medical supplies desperately needed on the frontlines in Israel.
“When I was home in Israel last month, I decided to do a safety inspection on my family’s bomb shelter. I had no idea that just a few weeks later, they’d all be huddled inside praying their lives will be spared,” said Dr. Ori Gat. “I want to do everything I can to help the people of Israel. I thought about jumping back on a plane and going back to work in the trauma hospitals there, but I can’t leave my family here either. This just strikes too close to home, but with this coordinated effort to collect supplies, together we can make a difference.”
