WITH EVERY STRIDE HE TAKES WITH TRANSPLANT HEART, WEST FLORIDA MAN EXPRESSES UNENDING GRATITUDE DURING NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH
April 25, 2023 – As healthcare professionals across Florida call attention to the importance of organ donation in April during National Donate Life Month, a west Florida man is particularly grateful for one donor among the more than 11.8 million enrolled in the state’s Joshua Abbott Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.
Just eight months after his heart transplant, the now 56-year-old John Wilder of Port Richey, Florida is able to live life to its fullest, vigorously competing in 10K runs with an eye on competing in the 2024 World Transplant Games.
“Grateful is the understatement of the world,” Wilder says. “With every stride, I think about the donor who gave me life.”
His health outlook wasn’t as rosy back in November 2019 when, after completing the New York City Marathon, his month-long post-race recovery period was marred with shortness of breath. He even found walking to be a challenge. Two months later, his cardiology team discovered a 98% blockage which was seamlessly repaired with the placement of a stent.

“The takeaway for employers is that there is a critical need to address this issue for women in the workplace,” says lead author Stephanie Faubion, M.D., director of Mayo Clinic Women’s Health.

HHS RELEASES PROPOSAL TO EXPAND HEALTH CARE FOR DACA RECIPIENTS DACA recipients would have access to health care through Affordable Care Act Marketplaces, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program
April 25, 2023 . – The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), today released a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that, if finalized, would expand access to health care by reducing barriers for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. Earlier this month, HHS announced its intention to release this rule by the end of April, and today’s announcement marks the fulfillment of that promise. The proposed change applies to the Health Insurance Marketplaces, the Basic Health Program, and some Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Programs (CHIP).
“DACA recipients, like all Dreamers, are Americans, plain and simple. The United States is their home, and they should enjoy the same access to health care as their fellow Americans,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “Every day, nearly 580,000 DACA recipients wake up and serve their communities, often working in essential roles and making tremendous contributions to our country. They deserve access to health care, which will provide them with peace of mind and security.”

BIOMARKER PATTERN FOUND IN KIDS WITH COVID 19-LINKED INFLAMMATORY SYNDROME
Findings from NIH-funded study could lead to new means of diagnosis and treatment for MIS-C.
April 25, 2023 – Children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C(link is external)) — a rare condition linked with the virus that causes COVID-19 — have biochemical indicators of cell injury and cell death that are distinct from other children with COVID-19, according to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Using high speed, artificial intelligence-controlled molecular sequencing of blood-and-plasma RNA and plasma DNA, researchers found that children with MIS-C have biomarkers indicating damage to multiple organs, the lining of blood vessels and the nervous system. MIS-C usually occurs two to six weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection, resulting in inflammation of the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes or gastrointestinal tract.
To conduct the study, researchers analyzed 416 blood samples from 237 patients. Their analysis enabled them to distinguish between patients with MIS-C and COVID-19. They believe their findings could lead to the development of tests that allow clinicians to distinguish between MIS-C and other conditions involving widespread inflammation, such as Kawasaki disease, septic shock, and severe COVID-19, and to the development of more appropriate treatments for each.
