DONATION BY FALCON COVE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TO AID PATIENTS AT JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

February 24, 2025 – National Junior Honor Society students at Falcon Cove Middle School in Weston have been raising money to buy books they’ll likely never read for children most will never know.

Their selfless act resulted in a $5,000 donation to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, money that will replenish books used in the hospital’s bibliotherapy program. The Weston residents raised money by selling coupon cards that can be redeemed for Domino’s pizza.

“Bibliotherapy has a special place within the Child Life Zone where books help children understand what they may be going through,” said Kelley Morris, president and CEO of the pediatric facility’s nonprofit foundation. “It’s hard for a four-year-old to understand a cancer diagnosis, for example, so we use therapeutic books to share a story that is similar to what the patient is experiencing.”

The check presentation was the centerpiece of an event that recognized Falcon Cove’s top fundraisers and was attended by students, parents, faculty, and Stella Stringer, advisor to the middle school’s honor society. “Our kids have gifts and talents we encourage them to use to make their South Florida community a better place. Fundraising for the children’s hospital is something they’re happy to do because it helps patients and families going through tough times,” said Stringer.

A Safe Haven for Newborns Reunites Firefighters with Baby Hope 21 Years Later

A Different Type of Family Reunion

MIAMI, FLORIDA, MARCH 20, 2025 —The Gloria M. Silverio Foundation, 501 C3, d/b/a A Safe Haven for Newborns, was founded 24 years ago by Nick Silverio with the sole mission of ending infant abandonment. The Foundation helps teens and women facing an unplanned pregnancy with the support they need.

On June 12, 2003, the Safe Haven for Newborns Helpline operator transferred a call to Nick from a young distressed mother who had recently given birth. He listened carefully to her and shared with her how A Safe Haven for Newborns could help her and her newborn infant. After weighing her choices, she decided the best and safest option for her newborn was to safely surrender her in the arms of a trained medical professional.

Two days later, on June 15, Father’s Day, the firefighters of Deerfield Station 66 heard a faint knock at their door. When Driver/Engineer Jim Burge opened the door, he was surprised to see a young woman cradling a small bundle in her arms. She looked up and simply said, “Please take care of my baby. It’s the only way,” handed him the infant and the diaper bag, then turned around and left.

Although they had all received the training A Safe Have for Newborns offers on how to receive a surrendered infant, they never expected that they would be accepting one. But their training kicked in. They knew they could ask general questions regarding health issues and if she needed help; no personal information. Burge handed the infant to Lieutenant Chris Florea, and he stepped outside the firehouse and called out to her. All he wanted was to know if she was alright. The mother stopped briefly, looked back, then walked away. “I think we were all in shock. You train for so many situations, but receiving a Safe Haven baby is one of those things you think will never happen. It’s life-changing,” said Florea.

CenterWell, Icon Health Collaborate to Transform Musculoskeletal Care for Seniors

Specialty care model introduced first in Palm Beach County

March 17, 2025 — Senior-focused primary care providers CenterWell Senior Primary Care® and Conviva Senior Primary Care® are now partnering with Icon Health, a leading provider of value-based musculoskeletal healthcare, to provide seniors with convenient access to quality, integrated musculoskeletal care in their primary care centers.

Musculoskeletal conditions, including back pain, arthritis, and joint injuries, are among the primary causes of disability in the senior population. These conditions often require coordinating care between orthopedic specialists, physical therapists and primary care physicians. The partnership embeds specialized advanced practice providers in the primary care centers to deliver care in-person and virtually, ensuring convenience for seniors while improving their health outcomes. This care model is available throughout Palm Beach County via virtual care delivery, or telehealth appointments, and in-person with specialists.

“This collaboration is advancing the delivery of whole-person musculoskeletal care,” said Dr. Evan Jacobs, Associate Vice President for Specialty Care at CenterWell and Conviva. “We’re encouraged by the early results showing that by integrating Icon Health’s specialized, team-based approach, we’re making it easier for our members to access comprehensive treatment. This is another way CenterWell and Conviva are partnering with specialty care providers to better address conditions prevalent among seniors.”

Investigational Device May Help Minimize Bleeding, Other Complications in Patients Undergoing Dialysis

March 20, 2025 – Sarasota Memorial Hospital is among 10 research sites studying an investigational device designed to reduce the risk of bleeding complications in patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment.

Led by vascular surgeon Inky Parrack, MD, Sarasota Memorial’s research and operative team is participating in a clinical study evaluating Gore’s InnAVasc immediate-usage graft. The study is evaluating the benefits of InnAVasc’s multi-layered construction and self-sealing puncture zone designed to allow immediate use after implantation in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

“With over 2 million people worldwide relying on dialysis for life-saving treatment, innovations are essential for improving patient safety, comfort, and quality of life,” said the Sarasota Memorial study principal investigator Inky Parrack, MD, FACS, RPVI.

A typical patient undergoes dialysis three times per week, with over 300 needle insertions per year. Unlike traditional grafts, the investigational InnAVasc device is designed with a protective backplate to protect patients from accidental needle punctures. In addition to its protective backplate, the research device offers raised target zones designed to make it easier for medical professionals to safely access the cannulation area, as well as self-sealing pods to close the puncture sites, which may minimize pain, swelling, and bruising.

Florida Atlantic Celebrates the Thrill of Match Day with Soon-to-be-Physicians

March 21, 2025 – Florida Atlantic University celebrated the thrill of “Match Day” with the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine’s class of 2025. The fourth-year medical students and soon-to-be physicians matched for residency programs as family, friends, faculty and hundreds of other guests celebrated this “nail-biting” time of year that shapes the next chapter of their medical careers.

Along with thousands of other fourth-year medical students around the nation, the class of 2025 opened their sealed envelopes promptly at noon to learn where they will fulfill their dreams for medical residency training. Residency programs take three to seven years to complete depending on the specialty and such training is required to become board-certified.

Among the guests cheering on the class of 2025 was FAU President Adam Hasner, who championed a multi-year effort to secure funding and approvals to establish the independent medical school at FAU in 2010 while he was majority leader in the Florida House of Representatives. This laid the foundation to reshape health care delivery in the region.

New Guidelines Expanded Access to Lung Cancer Screening, But Gaps Remain in Reaching Rural and Uninsured Populations

Updates in 2021 increased the total number of people screened for lung cancer. Still, barriers reduce access in vulnerable populations.

MARCH 20, 2025– Since 2021, when lung cancer screening guidelines began to include younger people and those with a lower smoking history, the number of screenings climbed, but significant gaps remain, especially among people with limited access to healthcare, according to a new study led by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

“The updated guidelines substantially increased lung cancer screenings overall, even as cancer screenings declined during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Tracy E. Crane, Ph.D., R.D.N., associate professor and co-leader of the Cancer Control Research Program at Sylvester. “However, discrepancies for who is screened persist, underscoring the importance of addressing structural barriers in rural and underserved populations.” Crane is senior author of the study, published in the March 20 issue of JAMA Oncology.

Study: Suppressing Key Protein May Unlock Immunotherapy for Glioblastoma

ZNF638 inhibition triggers “viral mimicry,” making tumors more susceptible to treatment

MIAMI, FLORIDA – Glioblastoma has remained one of the toughest cancers to treat, resisting even the latest advances in immunotherapy. But new research from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, suggests a way forward: suppressing a protein called ZNF638 triggers an antiviral immune response, making immune checkpoint inhibitors more effective. The discovery not only offers a potential new treatment strategy but also identifies ZNF638 as a biomarker that could help personalize immunotherapy for patients. The findings appear in the March 17 issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

NIH researchers develop eye drops that slow vision loss in animals

Treatment shows potential to slow the progression of human degenerative eye diseases, including retinitis pigmentosa.

MARCH 21 2025 – Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have developed eye drops that extend vision in animal models of a group of inherited diseases that lead to progressive vision loss in humans, known as retinitis pigmentosa. The eye drops contain a small fragment derived from a protein made by the body and found in the eye, known as pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF).  PEDF helps preserve cells in the eye’s retina. A report on the study is published in Communications Medicine.

“While not a cure, this study shows that PEDF-based eye drops can slow progression of a variety of degenerative retinal diseases in animals, including various types of retinitis pigmentosa and dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD),” said Patricia Becerra, Ph.D., chief of NIH’s Section on Protein Structure and Function at the National Eye Institute and senior author of the study. “Given these results, we’re excited to begin trials of these eye drops in people.”
