BROWARD HEALTH MEDICAL CENTER FIRST IN SOUTH FLORIDA TO IMPLANT AMDS™ HYBRID PROSTHESIS IN LIFESAVING CARDIAC SURGERY

An advanced medical device designed for one of the most fatal cardiovascular medical emergencies

May 21, 2025 –  Broward Health Medical Center has achieved a lifechanging medical milestone, becoming the first hospital in South Florida and only the second in Florida to implant the AMDS™ Hybrid Prosthesis, this advanced medical device is designed to treat acute DeBakey Type I aortic dissections complicated by malperfusion, one of the most fatal cardiovascular medical emergencies.

The landmark procedure was performed on April 27th by Alexander Justicz, M.D., a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, alongside the cardiovascular operating room team. It’s one of the first performed in the United States since the AMDS Hybrid Prosthesis received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval under a Humanitarian Device Exemption.

“This is a proud moment for Broward Health,” said Jenna Merlucci, vice president of heart and vascular services at Broward Health. “Being among the first hospitals in the country to adopt this advanced technology demonstrates our commitment to leading-edge cardiovascular care and improving outcomes for critically ill patients.”

The AMDS Hybrid Prosthesis allows surgeons to repair complex aortic tears with greater precision, reduce complications and significantly improve survival in patients suffering from this life-threatening condition.

“The AMDS device gives us a critical advantage in treating one of the most dangerous forms of aortic dissection, which is a tear in the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body,” Dr. Justicz said. “By helping us restore blood flow to vital organs and reduce the risk of new tears after surgery, the AMDS Hybrid Prosthesis can dramatically improve a patient’s chances of survival and long-term recovery.”

Tampa General Hospital Enhances Heart Care with Cutting-Edge Imaging Technology

This new 512-slice CT scanner excels in advanced imaging, prioritizing speed, resolution and patient comfort.

May 21, 2025 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) is raising the bar for heart care with the addition of two GE Healthcare Revolution APEX 512-Slice computed tomography (CT) scanners. The advanced scanners leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies to deliver faster, clearer and more precise scans, refining diagnoses and treatments of cardiovascular diseases.

The purchase of the scanners was made possible thanks to a generous gift by the Ferman family to the TGH Foundation. One is located at the TGH Ferman Family Imaging Center in Tampa General Hospital Diagnostic Imaging on the Davis Islands campus; the other is being used for inpatient examinations within the hospital itself.

“This technology is a game-changer for cardiac imaging at Tampa General,” remarked Dr. Shone Almeida, director of the Cardiac CT program at Tampa General and a faculty member of the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “With sharper images and faster scan times, we can diagnose heart disease with greater confidence, allowing cardiologists to make better treatment decisions and improve patient outcomes.”

The 512-slice CT scanner is a cornerstone of the TGH Cardiometabolic Disease Prevention Program, providing highly detailed images of the heart and coronary arteries. The program focuses on early detection, risk assessment and personalized interventions to prevent the progression of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity-related heart conditions. “The integration of this technology into our cardiometabolic program enables us to identify early signs of heart disease before symptoms arise, offering patients a chance to take preventive action,” said Almeida who is also the medical director for the cardiometabolic program at Tampa General.

FMA: How will the congressional reconciliation plan affect Medicare payments?

By Jarrod Fowler, MHA, FMA Director of Health Care Policy and Innovation

May 22, 2025 – Congress is currently debating a bill that would update, renew, and overhaul many provisions of the tax code while also making changes to other federal programs, including Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP. Understandably, a great deal of attention has been focused on the Medicaid funding cuts in the pending bill. However, the legislation also affects Medicare payments.

The legislation, as of May 20, would marginally increase Medicare physician payments over the next several years, relative to payments scheduled to take effect under current law. However, because the legislation does not address the 2.8% Medicare payment cut this year, even the increased spending included in the bill will not be enough to make up for existing cuts any time soon.

Specifically, the bill takes the existing Medicare rate and increases it by 75% of the Medicare Economic Index (a measure of inflation for practice costs) in 2026 and then by 10% of ME thereafter. This amounts to a payment increase of roughly 2.25% in 2026 and .25% thereafter, falling far short in 2027 and beyond.

UHEALTH: Student innovators garner a boost of support

Five teams of students each won $100,000 in support funding for their innovations at the second annual USTAAR pitch competition recently.

By Janette Neuwahl Tannen

MAY 19, 2025 – Raghad Al-Kandari was moving into her apartment a few summers ago when she saw her mom’s skin turn flush and watched her start sweating, even though they were indoors.
Like millions of other women, her mother was experiencing a hot flash. And while Al-Kandari rushed to get her some ice water and lower the air conditioning, she felt pretty helpless to ease her mother’s discomfort.

“I witnessed firsthand how intense her hot flashes were and how profoundly they affected her quality of life,” said Al-Kandari, whose mother was visiting from their native Kuwait. “It was heartbreaking to see how limited the options were, with most women being told to either go on hormone replacement therapy or drastically change their lifestyles.”

Soon after, Al-Kandari and three of her biomedical engineering classmates decided to create a solution for the many women suffering through these episodes, which often accompany the onset of menopause. They created a discreet wearable cooling vest called VasoPass, that can help relieve hot flashes by sensing them on the skin, and immediately offering a cooling sensation through a device that fits under a shirt.

Their ingenuity helped the team of young biomedical engineers win $100,000 to further develop VasoPass as part of the University Student Startup Accelerator, or USTAAR’s second annual pitch competition. It was one of five student teams that earned the same grant through USTAAR this spring.

Funded through a generous donation from University of Miami alumni brothers, Angel and Victor Alvarez, the USTAAR student incubator began in early 2024. Since then, 30 student teams have won $10,000 in the fall semester, and benefited from mentoring through the program. These recipients then compete for a larger prize in the spring to further improve their prototypes.

Good Samaritan Medical Center Offers Innovative Nipple Sparing Goldilocks Mastectomy for Breast Cancer Patients

May 23, 2025 – Good Samaritan Medical Center offers Nipple Sparing Goldilocks Mastectomy (NSGM), an advanced breast cancer surgery that provides a safe and effective alternative to traditional reconstruction methods, particularly for women with a higher BMI or those who prefer to avoid breast implants. Leading this transformative approach is Dr. June Lee, a breast surgeon who has successfully performed over 400 Goldilocks mastectomies, attracting patients across South Florida and the Treasure Coast.

NSGM is a single-stage breast reconstruction that preserves the nipple-areola complex (NAC) while removing cancerous tissue. Unlike traditional methods that require implants or complex reconstruction procedures, NSGM utilizes the patient’s own tissue to create a natural breast mound. This technique can result in simpler recovery, favorable cosmetic outcomes, and lower complication rates, making it an ideal choice for women with larger or ptotic (sagging) breasts, those with medical comorbidities, or those who simply prefer to avoid implants.

“Dr. June Lee’s expertise in the Nipple Sparing Goldilocks Mastectomy has transformed the way we approach breast cancer treatment and reconstruction,” said Sheri Montgomery, CEO of Good Samaritan Medical Center. “This technique not only offers a safe and effective option for patients with higher BMIs but also aligns with the growing trend of women seeking alternatives to implants. We are proud to provide this innovative care to our community.”

Fire safety tips for families: Prevent burns around campfires

May 19, 2025 – Campfires are a beloved part of summer — whether you’re roasting marshmallows, telling stories or just enjoying the warmth. But for families with young children, it’s important to be aware of the risk of burns and know how to prevent and respond to such injuries.

“It’s almost a part of a life ritual,” says Denise Klinkner, M.D., pediatric trauma center director and pediatric surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, of social gatherings around a fire. “But approach it diligently to maintain a safe and fun environment.”

Dr. Klinkner urges adults and caregivers to remain vigilant and aware, especially regarding the status of the fire and the location of any children.

Risks to watch for around campfires
Children, particularly toddlers and preschoolers, are naturally curious and still developing coordination. That makes them more likely to trip or move too close to the fire. Because of this, most campfire burns in children happen to the hands and are usually second-degree or even third-degree burns.

Here are some common dangers to watch out for:

Hot tools and sticks: Roasting sticks and metal forks can cause burns or even eye injuries if a child grabs or walks into them.
Grease from food: Dripping grease can flare up flames and cause more severe burns.
Accelerants like lighter fluid: These can cause explosions when they catch fire or make burns worse if they come into contact with skin. Caregivers should also ensure these items are sealed to avoid accidental consumption by a young child.
Propane fire pits: While convenient, they can explode if not handled properly.

MAHA Commission Unveils Landmark Report Exposing Root Causes of Childhood Chronic Disease Crisis

May 22, 2025—The Presidential Commission to Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) today released a groundbreaking assessment identifying key drivers behind the childhood chronic disease crisis. Coming just 98 days after President Trump signed an Executive Order, links to an external website establishing the MAHA Commission and tasking it with delivering a “Make Our Children Healthy Again Assessment, links to an external website,” the report exposes a range of contributing factors—including poor diet, accumulation of environmental toxins, insufficient physical activity, chronic stress, and overmedicalization.

By examining these drivers, the assessment arms MAHA Commission stakeholders and partners with clear evidence that will support the development of effective policy interventions where they can deliver the greatest impact.

“We will end the childhood chronic disease crisis by attacking its root causes head-on—not just managing its symptoms,” said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “We will follow the truth wherever it leads, uphold rigorous science, and drive bold policies that put the health, development, and future of every child first. I’m grateful to President Trump for his leadership—and for trusting me to lead this fight to root out corruption, restore scientific integrity, and reclaim the health of our children.”

“We must do more to improve the health outcomes of our kids and families, and President Trump knows agriculture is at the heart of the solution. America’s farmers and ranchers dedicate their lives to the noble cause of feeding their country and the world, and in doing so have created the safest and most abundant and affordable food supply in the world. We are working to make sure our kids and families are consuming the healthiest food we produce,” said U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins. “I look forward to continuing to work with Secretary Kennedy and other members of the MAHA Commission to improve our nation’s health.”

“America’s childhood chronic disease crisis will be solved through innovation,” said U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin. “At EPA, we will do our part to protect human health and the environment while fulfilling all of our statutory obligations to safely regulate chemicals needed for every part of modern life to transport, build, feed, and power the Great American Comeback. This report shows America will continue to be the energy, industrial, and agricultural power of the world—and we can continue this while ensuring we have the healthiest children.”

Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Treasury announce move to strengthen healthcare price transparency

Trump administration issues request for information, guidance to expand access to real prices

May 22, 2025 – The departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and the Treasury took action today to advance President Trump’s directive to ensure Americans have clear, accurate, and actionable information about healthcare prices.

The departments jointly issued a Request for Information seeking public input on how to improve prescription drug price transparency. The RFI seeks input regarding the prescription drug price disclosure requirements, including information on existing prescription drug file data elements and information on implementation generally, such as the ability of health plans to access necessary data for reporting, as well as state approaches and innovation.

The agencies also released updated guidance for health plans and issuers that sets a clear applicability date for publishing an enhanced technical format for disclosures. These improvements are designed to eliminate meaningless or duplicative data and make cost information easier for consumers to understand and use.

“Transparency empowers individuals to make well-informed health care decisions for themselves and their families,” said Deputy Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling. “The departments’ actions today execute President Trump’s mission to address rising health care costs by promoting competition in the marketplace.”

Separately, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released new guidance, available on the Hospital Price Transparency resources website, to strengthen the Hospital Price Transparency requirements, requiring hospitals to post the actual prices of items and services, not estimates. CMS also issued its own RFI to gather public feedback on how to boost hospital compliance and enforcement and ensure data shared is accurate and complete.

“Transparency in health care is essential, not optional,” said Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Chief of Staff and Deputy Administrator Stephanie Carlton. “Americans deserve to know exactly what they’re paying for and what they’re getting in return. We’re pulling back the curtain on pricing and ultimately value – because accountability is a foundation of a healthier nation.”

These efforts align with Executive Order 14221, “Making America Healthy Again by Empowering Patients with Clear, Accurate, and Actionable Healthcare Pricing Information,” which directs the Secretaries of Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services to build on the groundbreaking transparency regulations launched during President Trump’s first term.

Scientists design gene delivery systems for cells in the brain and spinal cord

Different populations of cells in the mouse brain, each one targeted with high specificity by one of the many new genetic tools developed through NIH’s The BRAIN Initiative Armamentarium for Precision Brain Cell AccessAllen Institute

NIH-funded breakthrough could enable targeted therapies for many neurological disorders.

May 21, 2025- Research teams funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have created a versatile set of gene delivery systems that can reach different neural cell types in the human brain and spinal cord with exceptional accuracy. These delivery systems are a significant step toward future precise gene therapy to the brain that could safely control errant brain activity with high precision. In contrast, current therapies for brain disorders mostly treat only symptoms.

The new delivery systems carry genetic material into the brain and spinal cord for targeted use by specific cell types. This platform has the potential to transform how scientists can study neural circuits. It provides researchers with gene delivery systems for various species used in research, without the need for genetically modified, or transgenic, animals. Examples include illuminating fine structures of brain cells with fluorescent proteins and activating or silencing circuits that control behavior and cognition.

“Imagine this new platform as a delivery truck dropping off specialized genetic packages in specific cell neighborhoods in the brain and spinal cord,” said John Ngai, Director of the NIH’s Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies® Initiative, or The BRAIN Initiative®. “With these delivery systems, we can now access and manipulate specific cells in the brain and spinal cord – access that was not possible before at this scale.”

NIH scientists test in an animal model a surgical technique to improve cell therapy for dry AMD

The technique may enable higher doses and combinations of cell therapies.

May 22, 2025 – National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists have developed a new surgical technique for implanting multiple tissue grafts in the eye’s retina. The findings in animals may help advance treatment options for dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is a leading cause of vision loss among older Americans. A report about the technique published today in JCI Insight.

In diseases such as AMD, the light-sensitive retina tissue at the back of the eye degenerates. Scientists are testing therapies for restoring damaged retinas with grafts of tissue grown in the lab from patient-derived stem cells. Until now, surgeons have only been able to place one graft in the retina, limiting the area that can be treated in patients, and as well as the ability to conduct side-by-side comparisons in animal models. Such comparisons are crucial for confirming that the tissue grafts are integrating with the retina and the underlying blood supply from a network of tiny blood vessels known as the choriocapillaris.

For the technique, investigators designed a new surgical clamp that maintains eye pressure during the insertion of two tissue patches in immediate succession while minimizing damage to the surrounding tissue.

In animal models, the scientists used their newly designed surgical technique to compare two different grafts placed sequentially in the same experimentally induced AMD-like lesion. One graft consisted of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells grown on a biodegradable scaffold. RPE cells support and nourish the retina’s light-sensing photoreceptors. In AMD, vision loss occurs alongside the loss of RPE cells and photoreceptors. In the lab, RPE cells are grown from human blood cells after they’ve been converted into stem cells. The second graft consisted of just the biodegradable scaffold to serve as a control.
