UROLOGY ICON CHOOSES MILLER SCHOOL’S DESAI SETHI UROLOGY INSTITUTE

One of the nation’s most accomplished and decorated urologists, Alan J. Wein, M.D., Ph.D. (hon.), has joined the Desai Sethi Urology Institute (DSUI) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine as professor of clinical urology and director of business development and mentoring.

“We are thrilled that Dr. Wein will share his extensive knowledge about not only urology practice and research, but also administration and mentoring, to help navigate DSUI’s growth in the coming years,” said DSUI Chair and Founding Director Dipen J. Parekh, M.D.

Dr. Wein said he is excited about spending the next chapter of his urology career at DSUI, which he believes has the talent and is gaining the recognition to be the premier urology institution in the Southeast U.S.

“I respect Dr. Parekh’s career and how he has grown the urology institute by hiring exceptionally talented and recognized clinicians. DSUI is in a position to achieve greater promise and recognition nationally and internationally in the field of urology with his leadership, and I look forward to contributing in some way to that growth,” said Dr. Wein.

Dr. Wein said that Dr. Parekh’s talent as a researcher and mentor helped to draw him to the Miller School.

“Dr. Parekh mentored Ranjith Ramasamy, M.D., who won the Gold Cystoscope — an award Dr. Parekh himself earned in 2013. The Gold Cystoscope is presented to the individual in all of urology who within 10 years of their residency completion has exhibited the greatest talent. It’s an enormous honor that goes to the individual and his or her mentor,” he said. “I would like to be able to contribute something along those lines to DSUI.”

HCA FLORIDA WESTSIDE HOSPITAL IS NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED FOR ITS COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING HIGH-QUALITY STROKE CARE

The American Heart Association presents Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus award for proven dedication to ensuring all stroke patients have access to best practices and life-saving care

July 6, 2023 —HCA Florida Westside Hospital has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Gold Plus quality achievement award for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest research- and evidence-based guidelines. Get With The Guidelines – Stroke is an in-hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.

CLEVELAND CLINIC RISK CALCULATOR SURPASSES OTHER CLINICAL MEASURES IN PREDICTING OVERALL SURVIVAL OF PATIENTS WITH NON-SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER

Score derived from calculator helps clinicians assess risk in patients treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy

JULY 6 2023 – Researchers at Cleveland Clinic have developed a risk calculator to predict overall survival of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), a type of external radiation therapy that uses special equipment to position the patient and precisely deliver radiation to a tumor. This work was recently published in JCO Clinical Cancer Informatics.

Risk calculators are crucial for treating NSCLC, due to the high variability in survival rates. The newly published research demonstrates that use of the persistent homology (PHOM) score of a patient’s CT scan, which is information derived from the risk calculator, is the strongest predictor of overall survival of any standard clinical measure.

Researchers developed a radiomic nomogram, representing the relations between key variables, as a new method of calculating risk beyond patient-specific histopathologic and clinical variables. A subdiscipline of machine learning, radiomics involves extracting high-dimensional data from images such as CT scans to better understand tumor biology and behavior. By extracting features from imaging data and applying predictive models, researchers can visualize disease characteristics not visible to the human eye.

HOUSE COMMITTEE HOLDS OVERSIGHT HEARING ON MEDICARE VALUE PROGRAMS

Highlights:

The House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee held a hearing on June 22 to discussing implementation of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act.

Aisha Pittman, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs represented NAACOS at the hearing and answered questions about how ACOs are leading Medicare’s transition to alternative payment models (APMs).

In written testimony and during the hearing, NAACOS called on lawmakers to extend incentives for practices in APMs and discussed ways that Congress can improve Medicare’s payment system to advance value-based care.

By:Robert Daley, Director, Legislative Affairs, National Association of ACOs

Congress provided financial incentives for clinicians to transition to value-based care models in 2015 through the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act, a law referred to as MACRA. It provided a 5 percent incentive payment to certain risk-bearing APMs, among other changes to Medicare’s payment structure for physicians. APMs encourage keeping patients healthy and improving quality, resulting in better care for patients and lower costs for taxpayers.

RESEARCHERS FIND WEAKER IMMUNE RESPONSE TO VIRAL INFECTIONS IN CHILDREN WITH MITOCHONDRIAL DISORDERS

One of the first human studies on how mitochondrial function impacts immune cells to guide future treatments.

July 7, 2023 – In a new study, National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers found that altered B cell function in children with mitochondrial disorders led to a weaker and less diverse antibody response to viral infections. The study, published in Frontiers in Immunology, was led by researchers at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), who analyzed the gene activities of immune cells in children with mitochondrial disorders and found that B cells, which produce antibodies to fight viral infections, are less able to survive cellular stress.

“Our work is one of the first examples to study how B cells are affected in mitochondrial disease by looking at human patients,” said Eliza Gordon-Lipkin, M.D., assistant research physician in NHGRI’s Metabolism, Infection and Immunity Section and co-first author of the paper.

NIH STUDY OFFERS INSIGHTS INTO HOW CELLS REVERSE THEIR DECISION TO DIVIDE

Finding could point toward more effective treatments that could potentially prevent cancer relapse.

July 5, 2023 – A new study suggests that cells preparing to divide can reverse this process and return to a resting state, challenging long-held beliefs about cell division. If interrupted early in their preparation to divide, cells were able to halt the division process, known as mitosis. The finding, led by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and reported July 5, 2023, in Nature, could point toward more effective treatments to interrupt the process by which cancer cells divide quickly and spread.

When cells receive growth-promoting signals, called mitogens, they enter the cell cycle—synthesize new copies of their DNA in a series of steps that culminate in cell division. Scientists have long thought that the preparatory stage of this cycle includes a point after which cells cannot halt the process. Researchers believed that after this “point of no return,” growth signals are no longer needed to drive cells to divide.

INVESTIGATIONAL THREE-MONTH TB REGIMEN IS SAFE BUT INEFFECTIVE, NIH STUDY FINDS

The first clinical trial of a three-month TB treatment regimen is closing enrollment because of a high rate of unfavorable outcomes with the investigational course of treatment.

July 5, 2023 – The first clinical trial of a three-month tuberculosis (TB) treatment regimen is closing enrollment because of a high rate of unfavorable outcomes with the investigational course of treatment. AIDS Clinical Trials Group 5362, also known as the CLO-FAST trial, sought to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a three-month clofazimine- and high-dose rifapentine-containing regimen. An interim data analysis showed that participants taking the investigational regimen experienced ongoing or recurring TB at rates above thresholds set in the study protocol. Based on these findings, the study’s independent Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB) recommended closing enrollment and modifying the treatment and follow-up of participants who received the investigational regimen to optimize outcomes. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, accepted the DSMB recommendations. Participants are being notified of the findings and analyses of the study data are ongoing.
