BROWARD HEART PROJECT SAVES LIVES
February 8, 2024 – Before his heart scan in October 2023, Andrew Cooper, a 57-year-old Davie resident, didn’t think he had any health concerns. But then a surprise diagnosis changed his life.
“I felt like I was in pretty good shape,” said Andrew, a former engineering manager, who worked in the medical device industry. “My weight and my recent vitals and cholesterol were all good. I get about six hours of exercise in a typical week, including mountain biking at Markham Park.”
However, his wife, Colette, a nurse at Broward Health Medical Center, urged him to visit a cardiologist due to his family history of heart disease.
So Andrew went to see cardiologist Kenneth H. Zelnick, M.D. While there were no red flags at the appointment, Dr. Zelnick told him about the Broward Heart Project. This Broward County initiative provides free cardiac CT screening tests to qualifying residents, enabling doctors to identify potentially life-threatening conditions that might otherwise go undetected.

NCH IS FIRST HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IN THE UNITED STATES TO LAUNCH SENSORATM CARDIAC DISEASE DETECTION PLATFORM
Naples, FL., February 8, 2024 – NCH has expanded its cardiac program with new artificial intelligence technology that will help detect heart valve disease earlier – and is the first healthcare system in the U.S. to do so. Using the SENSORA™ Cardiac Disease Detection Platform by Eko Health, NCH Medical Group primary care physicians can more accurately and consistently identify structural heart murmurs indicative of valvular heart disease (VHD) during routine primary care visits.
While your healthcare team listens to your heart with an Eko digital stethoscope, SENSORA™ easily and quickly collects data that helps detect VHD — a life-threatening condition diagnosed in more than 8 million Americans.
Older adults have approximately a 1 in 10 chance of developing clinically significant VHD, but more than half (57%) goes undetected. Left undetected and untreated, VHD can lead to heart failure, stroke, blood clots, and death. SENSORA™ helps our physicians determine if patients should be referred for additional testing or to a specialist for further evaluation and treatment. By detecting valve disease earlier, NCH can treat patients sooner and ultimately save more lives.

PIONEERING CLINICAL TRIAL FOR TREATMENT OF AFIB LAUNCHES AT HCA FLORIDA MERCY HOSPITAL IN MIAMI
The pulsed field ablation procedure holds the promise of becoming the new gold standard for treating AFib due to its safety and efficacy.
Miami, FL February 9, 2024 – HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, a 488-bed facility, and part of HCA Florida Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in the state, is the site of the first clinical trial for pulsed field ablation in Miami. A pulsed field ablation, or PFA, is a minimally-invasive intervention for treating patients suffering from atrial fibrillation, or AFib. The first procedures were performed this week at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital by Dr. Jose Osorio, the medical director of cardiac electrophysiology at HCA Florida Miami Electrophysiology, as part of several clinical research studies on the new intervention expected to be widely available in the United States soon.
In treating AFib, pulsed field ablation utilizes a controlled electric field to selectively ablate cardiac tissue that is causing irregular heartbeats. This new treatment method has been shown to minimize the risk of damage to surrounding tissues. This is because pulsed field ablation disables cardiac cells using electricity rather than extreme temperatures used in the traditional approaches. Further, the technology allows ablation procedures to be performed in less time.

NEW DIRECT LINKS DISCOVERED BETWEEN THE BRAIN AND ITS SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT
Fluid containing light-emitting molecules was seen to slip through the arachnoid barrier where blood vessels passed through.NINDS
NIH collaboration has implications for neural-immune system responses and aging.
February 7, 2024 – In a recent study of the brain’s waste drainage system, researchers from Washington University in St. Louis, collaborating with investigators at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a part of the National Institute of Health (NIH), discovered a direct connection between the brain and its tough protective covering, the dura mater. These links may allow waste fluid to leave the brain while also exposing the brain to immune cells and other signals coming from the dura. This challenges the conventional wisdom which has suggested that the brain is cut off from its surroundings by a series of protective barriers, keeping it safe from dangerous chemicals and toxins lurking in the environment.
