The Value of Florida Hospitals to Communities
By Mary C. Mayhew
Florida’s hospitals are the heartbeats of their communities. Generally, when we see the Blue “H” sign for the nearest hospital, we think about that one large facility providing emergency care, lifesaving surgeries, treatment for serious illnesses, maternity care, and many other vitally important hospital-based services. In reality, Florida’s hospitals are all of that and so much more.
Every three years, hospitals undertake an elaborate process to determine their community’s health needs through a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). This comprehensive survey broadly reviews the needs of a community, such as rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, substance use disorder, mental illness and many other pressing community health needs. The results of these surveys help to shape the priorities of hospitals and health systems and their partnerships with other community organizations to improve the health and well-being of the individuals and families in their communities.
Hospitals are helping to bridge gaps in social services that negatively impact well-being and health outcomes for children and adults. Many times, these initiatives are closely aligned with local or state health department priorities – such as helping moms into early prenatal care, tackling housing instability for those with mental illness, supporting nutrition programs to address food insecurity, or developing innovative programs to overcome transportation barriers.

| ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight: Laura Denoux
By Lois Thomson
In an interesting turn of events, a television show started Laura Denoux on her career path in healthcare. Denoux, vice president & chief development officer at Holy Cross Health – a member of Trinity Health – had previously worked in sales and marketing for leading global companies in the technology and beauty sectors. That was until she became a contestant on the NBC reality TV show, “The Biggest Loser.”
“I was a contestant from 2008 to 2009,” she said. “When I went on the show and lost a significant amount of weight, I said, ‘I’m not going back to my old ways and old habits.’ I wanted to change my life and work in the health and wellness industry.”
The opportunity came when a friend who worked at the American Heart Association was transferring from the Miami to the New York office. She said they were looking for a sales and marketing leader with a passion for improving the health and well-being of the community, and told Denoux she thought she’d be a great fit for the role. “Sure enough I applied and that’s how I started in healthcare.” Denoux spent almost four years there as director of development, then more than 10 years at Baptist Health South Florida as director of development and corporate partnerships, and now nearly two years at Holy Cross Health.

Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute Joins Elite Global Registry to Fight Sarcoma
Less than 5% of all cancer centers around the world qualify for inclusion in the Sarcoma Alliance for Research through Collaboration (SARC).
August 29, 2024 – Sarcoma is a rare and often deadly cancer that can rapidly grow from bone or soft tissue in any area of the body. Due to its rarity and wide range of subtypes, the availability of clinical trials that lead to effective treatments are limited. To help patients who have been diagnosed with sarcoma, the Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute has taken a crucial step in driving innovation and research.
The TGH Cancer Institute’s Sarcoma Center of Excellence has been accepted into the Sarcoma Alliance for Research through Collaboration (SARC), a world-renowned, nonprofit cancer research organization. It was founded to encourage partnership among major cancer centers, researchers and clinicians to find a cure for all sarcoma types.
With less than 5% of all cancer centers in the world qualifying for membership in SARC, the TGH Cancer Institute has joined an elite group in the fight against sarcoma.
“This recognition is more than an accolade − it’s an opportunity to provide our sarcoma patients access to innovative research on a global level,” said Dr. Victoria Rizk, medical oncologist and clinical director of the TGH Cancer Institute Sarcoma Center of Excellence. “This honor would not be possible without the unwavering dedication of our sarcoma specialists, nurses, team members and patients.”

When It Comes to Patient Care – Benchmark the Best Part 5
By Jay Juffre
For the past few months, we have been looking at what the best health systems and independent medical providers are doing to drive patient care. These innovative organizations are focusing on key initiatives which are driving referrals, long-term loyalty and ultimately increased revenues. This month the focus is on improving the culture as it relates to operational excellence or continuous quality improvement. The old saying, what got you here won’t get you there, could never be more true than in the medical arena. The best of the best are constantly looking at how they drive patient care and asking the simple question, ‘how can we get better?’ These organizations are getting a two for one benefit by involving the staff in developing ideas on how to find a better way, every day. Not only do the teams develop and test ways to improve the overall patient experience, but there is also an inherent improvement on staff engagement in the process. Involving the patients, both directly and indirectly, is also key. Feedback both positive and negative is gold if you are looking to improve things. Whether it be by asking the patient directly, looking at survey data, or by examining trends in patient returns or referrals, determining ways to improve on what is working or change what is not, is huge. When we speak with customers about their approach to continuous improvement, there are generally two reactions.

Delray Medical Center Completes 1000th TAVR procedure
August 29, 20234- Delray Medical Center completes its 1000th Transcatheter Aortic Valve replacement (TAVR) procedure. TAVR is a minimally invasive treatment option for patients with severe aortic stenosis. The procedure may be especially beneficial for patients who are not suitable candidates for traditional open-heart surgery. Delray Medical Center first offered TAVR in 2015.
The procedure involves the placement of one of two devices: the self-expandable Medtronic CoreValve or the balloon-expandable Edwards SAPIEN XT valve. Either device is implanted into the body with a tube-based delivery system. It is designed to replace a patient’s diseased native aortic valve without traditional open-heart surgery and while the heart continues to beat. This avoids the need to stop the patient’s heart and connect him or her to a heart-lung machine, which temporarily takes over the function of the heart and the patient’s breathing during surgery (cardiopulmonary bypass).

Monkeypox in Florida: Navigating the Emerging Health Crisis
By Jyotsna Chawla, PhD, MS, MS
The World Health Organization has declared a global health emergency for mpox, formerly known as monkeypox. Florida is facing a formidable public health challenge, with more than 100 mpox cases reported this year, over half of which involve residents from South Florida. This rise in monkeypox cases mirrors a global trend, where increased international travel and close human contact are accelerating the virus’s spread across multiple counties.
Monkeypox: From Origins to Outbreaks
Monkeypox, often referred to as mpox, belongs to the Orthopoxvirus family, which also includes smallpox and cowpox viruses. The virus is divided into two main clades: Clade I, primarily found in Central Africa, is associated with more severe disease, and Clade II, more common in West Africa, typically causes less severe illness. The eradication of smallpox in 1980 was a monumental public health victory, but it left populations with waning immunity, creating an environment where monkeypox could thrive. Recent outbreaks, particularly involving the new Clade 1b variant, have demonstrated the virus’s ability to spread far and wide, challenging global health systems in a world that once believed smallpox was a thing of the past.
How Monkeypox Spreads and What to Watch For
Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans. The virus spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids, lesions, or respiratory droplets of an infected person, as well as through contaminated materials like bedding and clothing. Additionally, the virus can be transmitted from animals to humans through direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or skin lesions of infected animals.
The disease often begins with non-specific symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. A unique feature of monkeypox is lymphadenopathy, or swollen lymph nodes, which distinguishes it from other similar viral infections. These early signs are soon followed by a rash that progresses through several stages: flat macules, raised papules, fluid-filled vesicles, and pus-filled pustules before finally crusting over. This progression usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. Recognizing these symptoms and understanding how monkeypox spreads are crucial for preventing further outbreaks.

Lee Health Now Offers Endoscopic Heart Valve Repair Surgery, Putting the Health System at the Forefront of Cardiac Care
Endoscopic valve repair is latest advanced surgical implemented by Lee Health, leading the way in cardiac care options
August 29, 2024 — Lee Health is thrilled to announce that it has completed the first fully endoscopic heart valve surgery through the smallest incision possible, providing enhanced heart care to the Southwest Florida community and beyond.
The implementation of endoscopic valve repairs puts Lee Health at the forefront of cardiac care in the United States, providing the next iteration of minimally invasive surgery and ensuring patients have access to the most comprehensive care available. The non-rib spreading technique provides a tangible and realizable benefit for patients, including less pain, a faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. In this procedure, the surgeons look at the heart through the smallest incision possible utilizing a 3-D endoscope, a device with a light attached to it that’s used to look inside a body cavity or organ. This precise level of visualization allows the surgeons to use their hands and tactile feedback for even more attention to detail.
Lee Health is among the first health systems in the United States to use the RAM® Device, an automated dual curved needle suturing device. The suturing tool is used to place stitches around the annulus of the aortic valve, mitral valve, or tricuspid valve, with the smallest incision possible.

Cannabis and hallucinogen use among adults remained at historic highs in 2023
Vaping among younger adults and binge drinking among mid-life adults also maintained historically high levels, NIH-supported study shows.
AUGUST 29, 2024 – Past-year use of cannabis and hallucinogens stayed at historically high levels in 2023 among adults aged 19 to 30 and 35 to 50, according to the latest findings(link is external) from the Monitoring the Future survey(link is external). In contrast, past-year use of cigarettes remained at historically low levels in both adult groups. Past-month and daily alcohol use continued a decade-long decline among those 19 to 30 years old, with binge drinking reaching all-time lows. However, among 35- to 50-year-olds, the prevalence of binge drinking in 2023 increased from five and 10 years ago. The Monitoring the Future study is conducted by scientists at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, Ann Arbor, and is funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Reports of vaping nicotine or vaping cannabis in the past year among adults 19 to 30 rose over five years, and both trends remained at record highs in 2023. Among adults 35 to 50, the prevalences of nicotine vaping and of cannabis vaping stayed steady from the year before, with long-term (five and 10 year) trends not yet observable in this age group as this question was added to the survey for this age group in 2019.
For the first time in 2023, 19- to 30-year-old female respondents reported a higher prevalence of past-year cannabis use than male respondents in the same age group, reflecting a reversal of the gap between sexes. Conversely, male respondents 35 to 50 years old maintained a higher prevalence of past-year cannabis use than female respondents of the same age group, consistent with what’s been observed for the past decade.

Single blood test predicts 30-year cardiovascular disease risks for women
Measuring inflammation and lipids in midlife may support earlier detection, treatment,
August 31, 2024 – Research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has found that measuring two types of fat in the bloodstream along with C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, can predict a woman’s risk for cardiovascular disease decades later. These findings, presented as late-breaking research at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2024, were published in the New England Journal of Medicine(link is external).
“We can’t treat what we don’t measure, and we hope these findings move the field closer to identifying even earlier ways to detect and prevent heart disease,” said Paul M. Ridker, M.D., M.P.H., a study author and the director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston.
For the study, investigators collected blood samples and medical information from 27,939 health care providers living in the United States who participated in the Women’s Health Study. Women, who started the study between 1992-1995 at an average age of 55, were followed for 30 years. During this period, 3,662 study participants experienced a heart attack, stroke, surgery to restore circulation, or a cardiovascular-related death. Researchers assessed how high-sensitivity CRP, along with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), a lipid partly made of LDL, singularly and collectively predicted these events.
