FAU Study Finds Where a Child Lives – Not Just Diet – Raises Type 2 Diabetes Risk

Oct. 21, 2025 – Type 2 diabetes (T2D), once considered an adult-onset disease, is increasing at alarming rates in children and adolescents. Before the mid-1990s, just 1% to 2% of youth with diabetes had T2D. Today, that number has skyrocketed to between 24% and 45%, with the average age of diagnosis hovering around 13 years old.

This troubling trend closely tracks with the ongoing rise in childhood obesity. While genetics, diet and physical activity all play roles in T2D risk, new research from Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine highlights another key factor in T2D risk: where a child lives.

Researchers conducted a large-scale study to explore how T2D is emerging in the youngest children. Using data from the National Survey of Children’s Health spanning 2016 to 2020, the team focused on a subgroup of children from birth to age 5 – a rarely studied demographic in T2D research.

FAU Historian Traces the Transformation of U.S. Nursing Homes into Big Business

October 22, 2025 – In postwar America, as suburbs spread and federal social welfare programs expanded, one underexamined building type quietly became a fixture of the American health care landscape: the nursing home.

In a new article published in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, historian Willa Granger, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the School of Architecture within Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, examines how a little-known company from midcentury Illinois helped lay the groundwork for the modern nursing home industry in the United States.

Granger’s research centers on the Americana Corporation, a for-profit eldercare chain that pioneered a replicable model of suburban, hospital-adjacent nursing homes during the 1960s – ultimately reshaping not only how older adults are cared for, but where and by whom.

When a Nurse Becomes the Patient

October 20, 2025 – Nell Trimble, RN, has been a neonatal nurse and lactation consultant at Broward Health Medical Center for more than 20 years. A natural healer, she especially loves caring for new mothers and newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Less than a year ago, the tables were turned when Trimble was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), a lesser-known form of breast cancer that is on the rise, according to the American Cancer Society. ILC is a unique breast cancer subtype that is more difficult to diagnose as tumors grow in a flat, sheet-like linear pattern, rather than what is typically a lump or cyst.

A resident of Coral Springs, 67-year-old Trimble is no stranger to cancer. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer more than 12 years ago and underwent surgery and chemotherapy treatments at Broward Health Imperial Point.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital Named Among Newsweek’s “Best-in-State” Hospitals

Oct. 22, 2025 – Sarasota Memorial Hospital was named among the nation’s leading hospitals in Newsweek’s annual “Best-in-State” hospital rankings released today.

“Managing a health crisis can be daunting—and with over 700 hospitals in the U.S. at risk of closure, knowing where to turn for the best care close to home is more important than ever, Nancy Cooper, Global Editor in Chief for Newsweek, wrote in today’s report. “We hope this list proves valuable as you make informed health care choices for yourself and your loved ones.”

HCA Healthcare to Host Seventh Annual “Crush the Crisis” National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

October 21, 2025 –  HCA Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE:HCA), one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers, today announced it will host its seventh annual “Crush the Crisis” national prescription drug take back day on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025. This year, HCA Healthcare facilities across the country will partner with local law enforcement to help communities safely and anonymously dispose of unused or expired medications at more than 140 collection sites.

Each year, in alignment with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, HCA Healthcare hosts “Crush the Crisis” events to raise awareness about the dangers of prescription drug misuse and the importance of proper disposal of unused or expired medications. Since 2019, HCA Healthcare has helped safely dispose of more than 88,000 pounds of unused or expired medication. This year marks another milestone in HCA Healthcare’s ongoing effort to reach 100,000 pounds of safely collected medications.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital trauma team to provide ‘Stop the Bleed’ training to school officials

To help save lives, the HCA Florida Ocala Hospital trauma team will teach lifesaving STOP THE BLEED® training to 75 Marion County Public Schools officials.

School officials training with tourniquets on dummy limbs.

OCTOBER 21, 2025- This month, HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital will provide lifesaving STOP THE BLEED® training to 75 officials with Marion County Public Schools.

Uncontrolled bleeding from a traumatic injury is the primary cause of preventable death for people of all ages, according to the American College of Surgeons. Learning how to stabilize and treat a bleeding victim could help save a life.

“Depending on the severity of the wound, someone who suffers an injury causing uncontrolled bleeding can die within three to five minutes. Meanwhile, the national average for emergency medical response is seven to 10 minutes. That means bystanders often are the only ones available to provide aid immediately after a traumatic injury,” noted Dr. Richard Petrik, interim chief medical officer for HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital. “People who are properly trained in the techniques of STOP THE BLEED can render critical, lifesaving assistance that gives these victims a fighting chance until first responders arrive.”

Breast cancer survivors find relief for debilitating menopause symptom

OCTOBER 22, 2025 – JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — About 50% of menopausal women experience genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) that involves changes to the genitals, including the vagina, urethra and bladder. When estrogen levels drop during menopause, it can cause the GSM symptoms of vaginal dryness, itching, burning, frequent urinary tract infections and pain during sex. Replenishing the hormone through vaginal estrogen is an effective GSM treatment. But many breast cancer survivors either can’t or don’t want to use estrogen.

More than 4 million people in the U.S. are breast cancer survivors. GSM affects up to 70% of these survivors. Medications that stop the body from producing estrogen can prevent or stop the spread of breast cancer. However, these antiestrogen therapies, called aromatase inhibitors, also can exacerbate GSM symptoms.

“Our data shows that as many as 20% of breast cancer survivors on aromatase inhibitors will stop taking their medication prematurely because they cause severe GSM symptoms. This early discontinuation of their breast cancer therapy can lead to worse outcomes in breast cancer survivorship. So, clearly, nonhormonal treatment options for GSM are needed,” says Anita Chen, M.D., a gynecologist at Mayo Clinic in Florida. Dr. Chen is the lead author of a study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Ascension Florida launches telehealth maternity care program to support mothers and babies

The Florida Department of Health is giving Ascension Florida $7.8 million to expand maternity telehealth services.

October 14, 2025 – Ascension Sacred Heart and Ascension St. Vincent’s have launched a new Telehealth Maternity Care Program that provides expecting mothers with personalized support throughout pregnancy and up to one year after birth at no cost.

Through a partnership with the Florida Department of Health, referred families are assigned a dedicated patient navigator who connects them with prenatal and postpartum services, helping to remove barriers to care.

Florida continues to face challenges in maternal and infant health, including higher infant mortality rates compared to state and national averages. Contributing factors often include inadequate access to quality prenatal care and limited comprehensive healthcare services in certain areas.

By offering telehealth navigation alongside in-person visits, Ascension Florida is expanding access and bridging those gaps, especially for vulnerable populations in Northwest and Northeast Florida.
