Janser to Retire from Memorial Healthcare System Foundations
August 16, 2024 – Kevin Janser, a nonprofit executive for more than 40 years, has announced he’ll be retiring at the end of September. He has spent the last 17 years leading Memorial Foundation and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation.
During his time as president of Memorial’s foundations, Janser and his team raised nearly $250 million to support programs, services, and facilities within the healthcare system, including more than $56 million for the expansion of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. He also recently oversaw a successful capital campaign for the new Memorial Cancer Institute facility in Pembroke Pines.
“Kevin’s impact has been significant, not just within our Memorial family, but throughout the entire philanthropic community in South Florida,” said K. Scott Wester, Memorial Healthcare System president and CEO. “His leadership positively impacted countless families, and his passion for fundraising made a difference for causes and campaigns that matter.”
A graduate of both Southern Illinois University and the University of West Florida, Janser began his career in higher education before transitioning to healthcare. Prior to joining Memorial in 2007, he was vice president of development at Holy Cross Hospital.
“Retiring is bittersweet,” said Janser, a Boca Raton resident. “I look forward to spending more time with my family, but I will miss the many colleagues, supporters, and friends who have made this journey so special. I thank each and every one of them.”

Internationally Acclaimed Success: Miami Cancer Institute Physician’s Innovative Surgical Technique Highlighted in The Lancet
August 15, 2024 – A technique developed by Horacio Asbun, M.D. and used during pancreatic cancer surgery has led to what he hopes will become the gold standard of care ― drainless distal pancreatectomy. The effectiveness of Dr. Asbun’s surgical technique, which includes omitting a once-believed essential surgical drain, has now been validated by researchers in Europe, who published their findings recently in The Lancet: Gastroenterology & Hepatology.
Dr. Asbun, chief of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery with Miami Cancer Institute, says omitting the drain historically used during these types of surgeries is decreasing the pancreatic leak rate, lessening the chance of infection, sepsis and other serious complications caused by fluid leaking into the abdomen after surgery.

Wellington Regional Medical Center Completes First Inspire Therapy Procedure
August 15, 2024 — Wellington Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce Dr. Deborah Loney has completed the first Inspire procedure at Wellington Regional Medical Center. Inspire is an FDA-approved, mask-free obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment option for people who cannot use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy.
OSA affects 22 million Americans annually. When left untreated, OSA can cause vehicle and workplace accidents, worsening mood and memory, stroke, heart attack, and even death. It occurs when the airway collapses during sleep and blocks the flow of oxygen to the brain. The brain senses a lack of oxygen and wakes the body up just long enough to take a breath, then falls back asleep. This cycle repeats throughout the night and causes poor, disruptive sleep.

3D body volume scanner uses AI to help predict metabolic syndrome risk
August 15, 2024 — Mayo Clinic researchers are using artificial intelligence (AI) with an advanced 3D body-volume scanner – originally developed for the clothing industry – to help doctors predict metabolic syndrome risk and severity. The combination of tools offers doctors a more precise alternative to other measures of disease risk like body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio, according to findings published in the European Heart Journal – Digital Health.
Metabolic syndrome can lead to heart attack, stroke and other serious health issues and affects over a third of the U.S. population and a quarter of people globally. The condition lacks widely accepted screening strategies. However, researchers found that using a 3D body volume scanner combined with imaging technology and Mayo Clinic-developed algorithms may help clinicians offer a more accurate method for identifying people who have the syndrome, as well as those at risk for developing it.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs Regarding Medical Cannabis Among Patients and Providers in Florida’s Long-Term Care Facilities
by: Jennifer Attonito, Katherine Freeman, Melanie K. Bone, Heather Howard, Carly Blum, George Luc Abstract
Objectives: Medical cannabis (MC) has been found effective in treating multiple symptoms commonly experienced by older adults; however, residents in long-term care (LTC) often lack access to MC products. This study seeks to identify patterns and barriers to recommending MC to patients and to explore the knowledge and attitudes toward MC use among patients and providers.
Methods: The quantitative portion of this study employed a survey to assess the knowledge of, attitudes toward, and barriers to MC among 126 providers in Florida LTC. Frequencies were reported, bivariate associations were analyzed, and a final regression model predicting MC knowledge was tested. In-depth interviews were conducted with 25 LTC patients, and content was analyzed using the RADaR method.
Results: The age of the providers ranged from 21 to 74; 74% were female, 18% were Black/African American, and 17% reported Hispanic ethnicity. Less than half (37.2%) felt they received adequate training on MC. Having accurate knowledge about MC was associated with greater confidence in answering patients’ questions (p=0.002). Although most providers (94.2%) felt MC is a viable treatment option, the main barriers to recommending it to patients were a lack of proper training or clinical guidelines. Regarding patients, 16% reported ever using MC, and less than half (32%) had knowledge of MC or how to obtain products. Many believed it could help with symptoms and would consider its use if recommended by a doctor. However, they reported that MC was rarely recommended by providers and that they knew little about the use of this therapy.
Conclusion: This study underscores access challenges among seniors in LTC who might benefit most from MC’s therapeutic properties. Complex MC policy implementation issues are discussed. State and federal policy issues around cannabis contribute to limited research on the therapeutic uses of cannabis, as well as the MC access problem addressed in this study.

Biden-Harris Administration delivers on promise to lower prescription drug costs for Americans
August 15, 2024 – In a historic moment that will help lower prescription drug prices for millions of people across America, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that it has reached agreements for new, lower prices for all 10 drugs selected for negotiations. These negotiated drugs are some of the most expensive and most frequently dispensed drugs in the Medicare program and are used to treat conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The new prices will go into effect for people with Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage beginning January 1, 2026.
If the new prices had been in effect last year, Medicare would have saved an estimated $6 billion, or approximately 22 percent, across the 10 selected drugs. These negotiated prices range from 38 to 79 percent discounts off of list prices. About nine million people with Medicare use at least one of the 10 drugs selected for negotiation. People with Medicare prescription drug coverage are expected to see aggregated estimated savings of $1.5 billion in their personal out-of-pocket costs in 2026. For more detailed information about the negotiated prices please see the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Negotiated Prices Fact Sheet – PDF.

NIH researchers find that large language models rely on concise, textbook-like language to evaluate medical questions.
August 14, 2024 – National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers discover that while artificial intelligence (AI) tools can make accurate diagnoses from textbook-like descriptions of genetic diseases, the tools are significantly less accurate when analyzing summaries written by patients about their own health. These findings, reported in the American Journal of Human Genetics(link is external), demonstrate the need to improve these AI tools before they can be applied in health care settings to help make diagnoses and answer patient questions.

The event, set for Nov. 9 at the Meyer Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, will bring families, friends and colleagues together to participate in heart-healthy activities and enjoy a 3.1-mile walk along the water. This year’s campaign is particularly special because it’s taking place during the American Heart Association’s centennial year.
