Baptist Health Foundation’s An Evening of Gratitude Celebrates Major Donors to Baptist Health Fishermen’s Community Hospital
April 16, 2026 – Nearly 200 guests attended An Evening of Gratitude benefiting Baptist Health Fishermen’s Community Hospital, which was held on April 10, 2026 at Oceanfront Park in Marathon, Florida. The event raised over $324,000 as the Foundation honored its Giving Society members and other donors to Fishermen’s Community Hospital. All proceeds from the evening will support the hospital’s Center for Excellence in Nursing program.
The event, presented by Geraldine and William Weir, featured a cocktail hour, dinner, live auction, and live band. Speakers included Aleta Williamson, Baptist Health Foundation Fishermen’s Community Hospital Council chair; Drew Grossman, Mariners Hospital and Fishermen’s Community Hospital CEO; and Alex Villoch, Baptist Health Foundation CEO. The program also featured special remarks by Diego Torres-Russotto, M.D., chair of neurology and the Distinguished Endowed Chair in Neurology at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute; and Pang Xiong, R.N., Emergency Department director at Fishermen’s Community Hospital.
“Fishermen’s Community Hospital is proud to serve as a source of high quality, compassionate care for the Florida Keys,” said Mr. Grossman. “Our goal is to ensure our community has access to essential healthcare services close to home — delivered with expertise and a personal touch. Our nurses are the heart of this hospital, and we are grateful to our community for supporting them.”
Ms. Villoch added, “Fishermen’s Community Hospital is truly something special – a hospital with a rich history of caring for the community, and a community that has cared for this hospital with incredible generosity, time and time again. We thank our Keys donors for their trust in us.”

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Heart Institute Performs Florida’s First Partial Heart Transplant
Among Nation’s First Programs to Offer the Innovative Procedure to Treat Valve Deformities in Children
April 15, 2026 -The cardiovascular surgery team at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Heart Institute has successfully performed the first partial heart transplant in the state of Florida on a 11-year-old patient. With an implanted “living valve,” the procedure is designed to prevent the need for future open-heart surgeries because the valve will grow with the child as they age.
In this major surgical innovation, the living valve of a donor’s heart is implanted into a patient, which allows the living valve to grow with the child. This is an alternative to prosthetic valves that do not have the capability to grow as the patient matures. Traditionally used animal-derived and mechanical prosthetic valves deteriorate over time or require the daily use of blood thinners. These non-living valves also need to be replaced over time, leading to additional open-heart surgeries, and are associated with a decreased survival rate after implantation.
This breakthrough procedure was led by Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery, Co-director of the Nicklaus Children’s Heart Institute as well as Professor and Researcher at the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, Dr. David Kalfa. The partial heart transplant highlights Dr. Kalfa as a pioneer in the development and clinical application of living heart valve implants for children.
“Partial heart transplants are redefining what’s possible in pediatric heart surgery. By transplanting a living valve, we are not just repairing a defect. We are restoring function in a way that allows the heart to grow naturally,” said Dr. Kalfa. “Our goal is to move beyond temporary solutions like prosthetic materials and provide children with long-lasting, life-changing outcomes.”

April 17, 2026 — Memorial Healthcare System recently hosted a “One City at a Time” event in Hollywood, two years after the program launched in the community to offer uninsured or underinsured residents access to health resources and services at no charge in locations convenient to them.
Memorial’s adult and pediatric mobile health vehicles were on site at Boggs Park and Sports Fields to provide medical exams/screenings. More than 40 community partners offered services, lunch was served and healthy food packages were distributed to 150 families. The community event also included games, music and wellness activities for all ages.
“We know not having easy access to care is one of the social determinants that impacts a person’s overall health,” said Dionne Blackwood, vice president of Memorial Primary Care and Ambulatory Services. “That’s why we’ve made the commitment to have our mobile units at community locations to make it easier for people to care for themselves and their families.”

Sarasota Memorial Joins International Study to Prevent Atrial Fibrillation After Heart Surgery
April 16, 2026 – New-onset atrial fibrillation (AFib) is one of the most common complications after heart surgery, affecting up to 50% of patients and often leading to longer hospital stays, reduced quality of life, and increased risks of stroke, heart failure and death. Despite its prevalence, there are currently no U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatments proven to prevent AFib in patients who did not have the condition prior to surgery.
Researchers at Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute are working to address this challenge through participation in the BoxX-NoAF clinical trial, a multicenter international study sponsored by AtriCure.
