ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight: Haroula Norden

By Lois Thomson

Haroula Norden is just wrapping up her year as president of the South Florida Chapter of ACHE – the American College of Healthcare Executives – and she was able to sum it up in a few words: “There was a lot of great success for the chapter!”

Norden took a moment to reflect more specifically on the happenings and achievements of the past year, starting with sponsorships: “It was a record year for sponsorships, and I really want to thank our sponsors for their generosity. It takes their donations to help us further our mission of educating and networking, and without their support year after year, it would be impossible for us to schedule all of our great events.”

Such events included hosting an education seminar every month, and Norden said she was proud that the chapter was able to have prestigious people on the panels who gave members an opportunity to learn, to meet with other professionals, and to hear about the latest undertakings in healthcare.

Among other accomplishments, Norden said the chapter wanted to expand its digital presence, and the goal was to reach more than 5,000 members on LinkedIn. She proudly stated, “We exceeded that goal, and we had an opportunity to present the success we had on digital space at the national chapter leaders conference.”

Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment Open Now for Uninsured Floridians

By: Mary Mathew

From now through Jan. 15, 2025, Floridians without health insurance can enroll in affordable coverage through the federal health insurance marketplace, healthcare.gov. Insured Floridians can renew their coverage on the marketplace, too. There are 15 different health plans participating in Florida’s marketplace for 2025, giving individuals and families multiple options to meet their care needs.

There is no income limit to qualify for marketplace coverage, and assistance with the cost of premiums may even be available for those who earn more than 400 percent of the federal poverty level. Cost-sharing reductions to make deductibles and other point-of-service cost-sharing obligations, such as copayments, more affordable are also available for individuals with incomes up to 250 percent of the federal poverty level. Floridians can check eligibility requirements on healthcare.gov.

Historically, Florida has had the largest number of marketplace enrollees nationwide. More than 4 million Floridians were enrolled in marketplace coverage in 2024, a significant increase from 2023, driven in part by the end of continuous Medicaid eligibility that was in place during the COVID public health emergency. Almost all enrollees (98 percent) qualified for premium assistance to reduce their monthly premium costs, and 63 percent qualified for cost-sharing reductions. With the premium assistance, the average monthly premium was $60.

Miami Cancer Institute Physician-Researchers Contribute to New Guidelines for the Treatment of Pancreatic Cancer

November 27, 2024 – Physician-researchers from Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, contributed to new international guidelines focused on radiation therapy target volumes and dosing strategies for pancreatic cancer. The guidelines were recently published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics (Red Journal).

“These expert guidelines will provide critical guidance to the radiation oncology community for how to employ more effective target volumes and higher dosing strategies for patients with locally advanced pancreatic tumors, which currently are not routine at most institutions,” said Michael D. Chuong, M.D., vice chair and medical director in the department of radiation oncology at Miami Cancer Institute as well as co-author of the article. “We have published data showing that this novel approach decreases the probability of tumor recurrence after radiation therapy and may contribute to prolonging patient survival.  This was an intensely collaborative effort, and research published on this topic at Miami Cancer Institute where volume- and dose-escalated radiation therapy has been a standard of care since 2018 for locally advanced pancreatic cancer influenced the development of the guidelines. It speaks to the quality of the procedures and research conducted in our department and at our institute.”

Hurricane Helene Flood Insurance Payments Surpasses $1 Billion

FEMA Encourages Florida Policyholders to Take Advantage of Extended Grace Period to Renew

WASHINGTON — The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), administered by FEMA, has paid policyholders over $1.4 billion for flood losses stemming from Hurricane Helene recovery, with over 56,000 policyholders having filed claims following the storm’s landfall.

FEMA estimates Hurricane Helene could potentially result in flood insurance claims losses between $3.5-$7 billion. These estimates are FEMA’s projections as of Nov. 12, 2024 and are subject to change. The losses include flood insurance claims received from six states, with the majority of claims coming from Florida.

Of the amount paid, more than $520 million of this amount has been in the form of advance payments, where policyholders may receive up to $20,000 prior to a visit from an insurance adjuster. Advance payments give policyholders flexibility to begin working on their recovery as they work the remainder of their claim.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Proposals that Aim to Improve Care and Access for Enrollees

NOVEMBER 26, 2024 – Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is proposing actions in the Medicare Advantage (MA) and Medicare Part D prescription drug programs to continue to strengthen protections and access to care for people with Medicare. The Contract Year (CY) 2026 MA and Part D proposed rule aims to hold MA and Part D plans more accountable for delivering high-quality coverage so that people with Medicare are connected to the care they need when they need it. In recognition of the prevailing medical consensus that obesity is a disease, CMS is proposing to reinterpret the statute to no longer exclude anti-obesity medications for the treatment of obesity from coverage under Medicare Part D and to require Medicaid programs to cover these medications when used to treat obesity. This proposal would provide more Americans access to these transformative medications, improving the health and quality of life for millions of people who have obesity.

Newer epilepsy medications used during pregnancy do not affect neurological development in children

NIH-funded study provides clarity on safety of two common antiseizure drugs lamotrigine and levetiracetam.

November 27, 2024 – Children of mothers who took certain antiseizure medications while pregnant do not have worse neurodevelopmental outcomes at age 6, according to a long-running study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The study was published in JAMA Neurology.

“Controlling seizures during pregnancy is an important part of prenatal care for women with epilepsy, but for years, the effects of newer antiseizure medications on their children was unknown,” said Adam Hartman, M.D., program director at NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). “One major component of this study was correlating the cognitive abilities of children with maternal blood levels of the drugs. This opens the door to future work and might inform better dosing strategies.”
