Qigong Significantly Decreases Chronic Low Back Pain in U.S. Military Veterans
FAU Pilot Study Explores Traditional Chinese Practice and Biopsychosocial Outcomes
January 17, 2025 – Chronic pain is widespread in the United States, particularly among military veterans, affecting between 40 to 70% of this population and serving as a leading cause of disability. Veterans experience chronic pain more often than civilians, with back pain being the most common. Up to 75% of older veterans report chronic pain, while younger veterans and those from recent conflicts face more severe pain.
Chronic low back pain in veterans affects not only physical health but also social and occupational functioning, often leading to job loss, financial stress and economic instability. Furthermore, veterans face higher rates of opioid prescriptions, increasing the risk of addiction and overdose. Treating chronic low back pain is complicated by comorbid conditions linked to military service, such as traumatic brain injury, PTSD and behavioral disorders. Nonpharmacological approaches are essential for effective pain management.
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University conducted a pilot study to evaluate the efficacy of qigong on biopsychosocial outcomes in veterans with chronic low back pain. Qigong (pronounced “chee-gong”) is a traditional Chinese practice that combines gentle movements, controlled breathing and meditation to cultivate and balance the body’s energy, often referred to as “qi” or “life force.”

Florida Division of Emergency Management Reminds Floridians to Practice Cold Weather Safety Ahead of Incoming Cold Front
January 17, 2025 – The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) reminds residents and visitors of cold weather safety, as a strong cold front is expected to bring the lowest temperatures of this winter season across North Florida late this weekend into next week.
“I want to remind Floridians to take the dangers associated with freezing temperatures seriously,” said FDEM Executive Director Kevin Guthrie. “As we prepare for the coldest conditions across the state this year, it’s essential that residents take action to safeguard themselves, their families and their property. Whether it’s ensuring your home is properly heated, avoiding travel on icy roads or having emergency supplies on hand, preparedness is key to staying safe.”
Cold temperatures in the 20s and 30s are expected across North Florida from Sunday through mid-to-late next week, with wind chills in the teens and 20s. Strong to severe thunderstorms may impact North and Central Florida on Saturday ahead of the cold front, while some areas in the Florida Panhandle could experience wind chill temperatures near single digits. Residents should take precautions throughout the week and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.

SMH Lung Team Combines Outreach, Screening and AI Technology to Detect Cancer at Earliest, Most Treatable Stages
January 16, 2025 – All too often, lung cancer is diagnosed too late, when it is difficult to treat. The overall five-year survival rate is just 20.5%.
But SMH lung cancer specialists are helping people beat those odds with an aggressive detection program catching early-stage lung cancer at double the rate achieved in most health systems across the nation.
“More than half of our lung cancer patients are being detected in stage I or II, when we have the best chance of treating and curing them,” said Joseph Seaman, associate chief medical officer at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System and medical director of SMH’s lung cancer screening program. “Much of that is due to our multi-prong approach to not only educate and screen high-risk patients, but also proactively look for suspicious nodules in other imaging scans and chest x-rays patients complete at SMH.”
SMH has long urged high-risk smokers and ex-smokers to begin annual screenings with low-dose CT scans, but in recent years, the lung team began leveraging innovative AI software developed by Eon to help radiologists detect suspicious nodules in imaging studies. These suspicious findings are often described as ‘incidental’ as they are found on scans completed for separate reasons. By combining lung cancer screening with an incidental findings program, SMH is able to spot more potential cancers, regardless of the patient’s entry point into the health system.

HSS Lifestyle Medicine Program Improves Health Before Elective Orthopedic Surgery for Patients with Chronic Diseases
January 13, 2025 – New research by investigators at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) shows that comprehensive lifestyle medicine interventions, including nutrition and exercise, are highly effective in improving patient health before elective orthopedic surgeries.
The study, published first online May 16 in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, reported early outcomes for 54 patients who enrolled in the HSS Lifestyle Medicine Program between March 2022 and December 2023. Almost 90% of patients had two or more lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Nearly all, 96%, successfully achieved their goals for improving health prior to elective orthopedic surgery.
HSS orthopedic surgeons identify patients with an elevated risk for surgical complications and poor outcomes based on lifestyle-related chronic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease and poor lifestyle behaviors such as smoking, and refer them to the program. These conditions have been linked to longer hospital stays, increased complications, higher early surgical revision rates, and increased readmissions.

Contact lenses used to slow nearsightedness in youth have a lasting effect
A myopic eye grows too long from front to back. Light gets focused in front of the retina. NEI
NIH-funded study finds progression of eye growth returns to normal in older teens, with no loss of treatment benefit.
January 16, 2025 – In a follow up study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), researchers found that children who wore special contact lenses to slow progression of nearsightedness, known as myopia, maintained the treatment benefit after they stopped wearing the contacts as older teens. Controlling myopia progression in childhood can help to potentially decrease the risks of vision-threatening myopia complications later in life, such as retinal detachment and glaucoma. Rates of myopia have been increasing in recent years with some implications that higher use of personal devices plays a role.

Excess weight gain in first trimester associated with fetal fat accumulation
Findings from NIH study suggest early intervention may prevent adult obesity associated with heavier birthweight
January 17, 2025 – Fetuses of pregnant people who gained excess weight in the first trimester of pregnancy show signs of excess fat distribution in the upper arm and in the abdomen, according to a study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These findings may inform efforts to prevent excessive weight gain early in life, a risk factor for adult obesity and related conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. The study, conducted by researchers at NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and other institutions, appears in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The authors analyzed data from an earlier study of more than 2,600 singleton pregnancies, which included information on maternal weight before and during pregnancy and three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound scans (up to five) throughout pregnancy. The authors found that pregnant people with excessive weight gain—defined as more than 2 kilograms (about 4.4 pounds) in the first trimester—had fetuses with larger abdominal circumference and abdominal area and larger fetal arm fat thickness, when compared to pregnant people with adequate weight gain. Fetuses from the excessive weight gain group continued to have greater arm thickness and abdominal measurements through the end of pregnancy, even when weight gain was not considered excessive during the second and third trimesters. In contrast, most previous studies have not examined fetal 3D measures during pregnancy and have only linked total weight gain across pregnancy, not just in the first trimester, with birthweight.
