Generations ‘Sync’ Up in Rural ‘Glades’ to Boost Technology Use for Health

FAU Nursing Study Pairs Teens, Older Adults with Smartwatches to Test Monitoring Health in Under-resourced Communities

March 5, 2025 – Given the growing role of mobile technology in supporting older adults, it’s essential to implement initiatives that encourage its adoption among this population. However, older adults are often unfamiliar with mobile technology, especially those in rural areas with limited digital access or literacy.

To bridge this gap, researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, and collaborators, implemented a pilot study to test an intergenerational program involving high school students, older adults and local faith-based health educators in the “Glades,” a rural community nestled at the southern tip of Lake Okeechobee in South Central Florida.

Red Cross Month honors local heroes in March

Join the celebration by donating on Red Cross Giving Day, March 26, to help volunteers deliver relief and care in the face of intensifying disasters

MIAMI, FLA., MARCH 3, 2025 —The American Red Cross South Florida Region is kicking off its annual March is Red Cross Month celebration to honor South Florida neighbors who deliver support when help can’t wait during emergencies. Red Cross Month is a national tradition that began in March 1943 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first Red Cross Month proclamation — and each U.S. president has followed ever since.

“During Red Cross Month, we proudly recognize the individuals who represent the best of humanity by stepping up to care for our neighbors in times of crisis,” said Krista Coletti, Regional Executive for the South Florida Region. “As disasters become more intense across the country and families face everyday threats like home fires, the support of these local heroes is critical to the health of communities. You can join them to help ensure no one faces an emergency alone by donating, volunteering or taking a class to learn lifesaving skills.”

Omalizumab treats multi-food allergy better than oral immunotherapy

Participants in the OUtMATCH trial are allergic to peanuts and at least two other foods among milk, eggs, wheat, cashews, walnuts and hazelnuts. NIAID

High rate of oral immunotherapy side effects in NIH trial explains superiority of omalizumab

March 3, 2025 – A clinical trial has found that the medication omalizumab, marketed as Xolair, treated multi-food allergy more effectively than oral immunotherapy (OIT) in people with allergic reactions to very small amounts of common food allergens. OIT, the most common approach to treating food allergy in the United States, involves eating gradually increasing doses of a food allergen to reduce the allergic response to it. Thirty-six percent of study participants who received an extended course of omalizumab could tolerate 2 grams or more of peanut protein, or about eight peanuts, and two other food allergens by the end of the treatment period, but only 19% of participants who received multi-food OIT could do so. Researchers attributed this difference primarily to the high rate of allergic reactions and other intolerable side effects among the participants who received OIT, leading a quarter of them to discontinue treatment. When the participants who discontinued therapy were excluded from the analysis, however, the same proportion of each group could tolerate at least 2 grams of all three food allergens.

Longer breastfeeding linked to blood-pressure lowering effects of certain infant gut bacteria

Nursing for at least six months may spur beneficial gut bacteria connected to better heart health years later.

March 4, 2025 – An observational study supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that infants who had more diverse bacteria in their gut had lower childhood blood pressure, and this protective association was stronger if they were breastfed for at least six months. The findings published in the Journal of the American Heart Association(link is external).

For the research, investigators reviewed data from 526 children enrolled in a prospective study in Denmark. They looked for connections between infant gut bacteria, which can be influenced by nutrition and supports a variety of health functions, and childhood blood pressure. To assess this, they collected fecal samples to analyze bacteria in the infants’ intestines during their first week, month, and year of life. Three and six years later, they measured the children’s blood pressure.

On March 19, we will present interesting cases and abstracts submitted to the conference.

As in previous years, a “first-class” group of world-renowned surgeons, gastroenterologists and oncologists has been invited to share their expertise and updates on the most recent technological and therapeutic advances in this steadily evolving field.  Since 1999, this course has become one of the most prestigious forums in the field of foregut surgery with attendees and faculty travelling from around the globe. This important educational activity also provides a forum for interaction between individuals involved with all aspects of foregut, metabolic, bariatric and fluorescence guided surgery, as well as the opportunity to converse with colleagues and key opinion leaders.

This year's program will again include an updated extensive review of artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotic surgery, and how surgeons from around the globe are incorporating these tools of the future into their practices today.
