UPDATED NEWS INFORMATION FROM THE LAST FOUR DAYS IN SOUTH FLORIDA |
Memorial Regional Hospital Recognized as Gold Level Center of Excellence for Adult ECMO Program
October 9, 2025 – Memorial Regional Hospital has been recognized by Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) as a “Designated Gold Level Center of Excellence” for its adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program. The Memorial Healthcare System facility is the only one in South Florida to earn the recognition.
This is the third consecutive Gold award for Memorial’s cardiac and vascular team, with the ELSO designation valid for three years.
ECMO is an advanced therapy that uses a machine to temporarily replace the function of the heart and lungs of critically-ill patients recovering from severe lung damage, cardiogenic shock, or heart failure. Blood is pumped and oxygenated outside of the body, and then returned to the body, allowing the patient’s heart and/or lungs to rest.
“Memorial Cardiac & Vascular Institute teams are focused on providing patients the very best critical care services, integrating advanced life support equipment and care,” said Jose P. Garcia, MD, chief of Memorial Healthcare System’s Adult Heart Transplant & Mechanical Circulatory Support Program. “Being recognized as a gold level Center of Excellence at Memorial Regional reflects the dedication to advancing healthcare that we strive to achieve daily.”

The Association of American Cancer Institutes shapes national cancer policy and improves access to care through joint initiatives.
October 9, 2025 — The Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Cancer Institute has been accepted into the prestigious Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI), a recognition of its commitment to excellence in cancer research, treatment, education and community outreach and engagement.
As a member of the AACI, the TGH Cancer Institute plays pivotal roles in shaping national cancer policy and improving access to care. Through joint initiatives and partnership with cancer centers, it strives to improve the overall quality of cancer care. The TGH Cancer Institute joins this elite group of more than 100 leading academic and freestanding cancer centers in North America just four years after Tampa General, the region’s only academic health system, established the cancer institute.
To be eligible for AACI membership, cancer centers are required to demonstrate a wide range of cancer-related clinical disciplines related to patient care. This includes a broad portfolio of cancer clinical trials, active participation in cancer-related community prevention, education and screening activities as well as a deep investment in advancing the field of oncology.
AACI membership will allow the TGH Cancer Institute to further participate in national policy discussions, share best practices and contribute to the development of higher standards of cancer care across the country.
“AACI membership signals that a cancer institute is committed not only to excellence in patient care and research but is also part of a larger mission to accelerate progress against cancer,” said Dr. Eduardo Sotomayor, vice president and executive director of the TGH Cancer Institute. “It is a significant recognition of our singular commitment to creating a leading cancer institute that brings innovative cancer care across the state of Florida and beyond.

Living Near Toxic Sites Linked to Aggressive Breast Cancer
Sylvester studies find women near Florida Superfund sites face higher risks of developing aggressive breast cancers October 10, 2025– Women living close to federally designated Superfund sites are more likely to develop aggressive breast cancers — including the hard-to-treat triple-negative subtype — according to new studies from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
According to a National Institutes of Health study, some especially aggressive forms of breast cancer that are resistant to treatment are on the rise. Now, three recent studies by Sylvester researchers have uncovered links between breast cancer, Superfund sites and social adversity. A Superfund site is a location that has been contaminated by hazardous waste and identified by the Environmental Protection Agency as needing cleanup because it poses a risk to human health or the environment.
The rise in breast cancer cases — particularly aggressive, hard-to-treat types such as triple-negative breast cancer — highlights the need to examine potential environmental factors contributing to these trends. In Florida, the presence of 52 active Superfund sites has become a focus, prompting members of Sylvester’s Community Advisory Committee to raise awareness and connect with the cancer center about these issues.
“Members of our community raised concerns that where they lived was making people sick,” said Erin Kobetz, Ph.D., M.P.H., an epidemiologist and associate director for community outreach and engagement at Sylvester and Judy H. Schulte Senior Endowed Chair in Cancer Research.

Cleveland Clinic: New Research Reveals Genetic Link to Most Common Pediatric Bone Cancer
The findings could help identify patients with osteosarcoma sooner and lead to personalized treatment
OCTOBER 9, 2025 – Researchers at Cleveland Clinic Children’s have helped identify a previously unknown gene that increases the risk of developing osteosarcoma, the most common type of malignant bone tumor in children and young adults.
Recently published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers analyzed genetic information from nearly 6,000 children with cancer and compared it to more than 14,000 adults without cancer. Utilizing databases and prediction tools, the study authors focused on 189 genes that participate in several DNA repair pathways.
The results showed that some children with cancer had inherited changes in certain DNA repair genes, that may raise their risk of developing particular cancers. One gene in particular, SMARCAL1 was flagged as a significant risk factor for osteosarcoma. Approximately 2.6% of children with osteosarcoma carry these inherited mutations in SMARCAL1, which may weaken DNA repair and promote tumor growth.
“These findings not only deepen our biological understanding of osteosarcoma, but allows for earlier detection, and the potential for developing targeted treatments for this rare but aggressive cancer,” said senior study author, Richa Sharma, MD, pediatric hematologist and oncologist at Cleveland Clinic Children’s. “With little progress in osteosarcoma treatment over the past 40 years, this discovery could pave the way for significant advancements in care for patients with this condition.”

HSS: After Years of Suffering, Innovative Spine Procedure Relieves Young Mom’s Unrelenting Back Pain
October 8, 2025 – After years of disabling back pain, a young New Jersey mom finally got her life back thanks to an innovative nonsurgical procedure called basivertebral nerve ablation at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). Also known as BVN ablation or the Intracept procedure, the treatment applies heat to disrupt a specific spinal nerve that is transmitting pain signals to the brain.
Thirty-two-year-old Rosie Amoroso had suffered from low back pain for years, but it got progressively worse after giving birth three years ago. She says the pain became so severe, she often found it impossible to sleep. “My back would be so bad, I couldn’t pick up my son. I couldn’t do basic things around the house, and I was putting a lot of pressure on my husband. He was very supportive but had a long commute to New York City for work every day.” Desperate for relief, Rosie consulted with nine different doctors in New Jersey, tried physical therapy and medication, received numerous epidural spinal injections, and underwent repeated radiofrequency ablation procedures. Nothing helped.
The unrelenting pain wasn’t her only challenge. While seeking care, Rosie says she dealt with doctors who made her feel “very dismissed,” suffered through uncomfortable procedures that provided no relief, and spent thousands of dollars in insurance co-payments. Still, she refused to give up hope. “I was ready to do anything to eliminate the pain, even if it meant spine surgery,” she recalls. At that point, she made an appointment at HSS in Manhattan. Her father had undergone major surgery there with excellent results.
Rosie made the two-hour trip from her home in Hazlet, New Jersey, to HSS to consult with a leading spine surgeon. After reviewing her medical history and examining her, he referred her to Edward S. Yoon, MD, chief of the division of interventional radiology at HSS.

DOH-Miami-Dade Recognizes National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
OCTOBER 8, 2025 – Miami, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) recognizes October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to spread important health education and encourage women to receive regular screenings to promote early detection and treatment of breast cancer.
Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast grow out of control. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in Florida. Although rare, men can also develop breast cancer. Mortality rates have decreased by over 5% in the past 10 years, partly due to improved screening, access, and treatment.
Prevention
-Routine screening and self-breast exams are important to breast wellness. Being familiar with your breasts can help you notice signs/symptoms such as lumps, discharge, or changes in size or nipple appearance. Contact your health care provider if you notice any signs/symptoms. -Women ages 40 to 74 should schedule a mammogram every two years with their health care provider, or with DOH-Miami-Dade if eligible for the Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.
-At-risk women should schedule regular breast MRIs and mammograms every year. Risk factors include family history, genetics, breast density, and more. -Healthy habits can help prevent breast cancer. A healthy lifestyle includes eating nutritious foods, avoiding alcohol and tobacco, regular physical activity, and adhering to recommended screenings. -Breastfeeding lowers a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer.

Mayo Clinic researchers discover ‘traffic controller’ protein that protects DNA, and may help kill cancer
A collage of cells with DNA stained in magenta and proteins of interest for the study — including KCTD10 — stained in green.
OCTOBER 8, 2025- — Mayo Clinic researchers have identified a protein that acts like a traffic controller for DNA, preventing damage during cell division — a discovery that could lead to new cancer therapies, according to a study published in Nature.
“DNA is the code of life. It’s critical for how a cell functions, but it’s also critical for our own being and defines what we are,” says Zhenkun Lou, Ph.D., the Swanson/Schmucker Endowed Professor to Support Health and Cancer Research at Mayo Clinic and the senior author of the new study.
When cells divide, DNA must be copied from one cell to the next — a process called replication. Dr. Lou’s research team discovered that a protein called KCTD10 plays a surprising role in protecting DNA during this critical stage. Acting like a built-in sensor, KCTD10 helps shield the DNA replication machinery from damage.
Cells also depend on another key process called transcription, where the cell decodes the DNA to create RNA. That RNA then can be translated into proteins, which are essential for healthy tissues and the body’s everyday functions.
The problem is that the different machines that run these two processes — replication and transcription — travel on the same strand of DNA, like a narrow highway. The replication machinery moves faster than the transcription machinery. Therefore, collisions resulting in DNA damage inevitably occur. Researchers did not know how cells communicate to prevent or recover from these collisions until now.
