VITAS Healthcare Opens Office in Cape Coral to Meet Growing Demand for Hospice Care
Chamber representatives joined VITAS Healthcare leaders for a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new office in late February.
March 4, 2026- Cape Coral continues to rank among the fastest-growing cities in the United States, and its expanding population of older adults highlights a growing need across Southwest Florida for accessible, compassionate end-of-life care. To help meet this need, VITAS Healthcare has opened a new administrative office in Cape Coral. The additional location means patients and families throughout Lee County can more easily access high-quality hospice care and meaningful support wherever they call home.
Hospice care is primarily provided in private residences, assisted living communities and nursing homes. The new Cape Coral location provides VITAS interdisciplinary hospice teams with a centralized office that improves coordination, supports faster response times and enhances access to care across the region.
A grand opening ceremony was hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral on Thursday, Feb. 26. “As our city continues to grow, it’s important that essential services grow with us,” said Donna S. Germain, president and CEO for the Chamber. “We welcome VITAS Healthcare as a partner committed to supporting our residents and their families. Hyundai and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Mark Third Year of Collaborating in Advancing Child Passenger Safety in South Florida

March 9, 2026 – Hyundai Motor America announced the third consecutive year of its collaboration with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, reinforcing a shared commitment to keeping children safe on the road. As part of this ongoing collaboration, Hyundai has donated $25,000 to support the hospital’s Car Seat Safety Program, expanding access to child passenger safety education, free car seat checks, and installations for families across South Florida.
The donation is made through Hyundai Hope, the corporate social responsibility initiative of Hyundai Motor America focused on improving community well‑being through health and safety programs. Over the past three years, Hyundai’s continued support has helped Nicklaus Children’s Hospital reach more families with critical education and resources designed to reduce preventable injuries and save lives.

What Happens When Patients Stop Taking GLP-1 Drugs? New Cleveland Clinic Study Reveals Real World Insights
Analysis of nearly 8,000 adults found 45% keep the weight off after one year
March 12, 2026- As the use of injectable GLP-1 drugs continues to rise, questions persist about what happens after patients stop taking them in real-world settings.
A new Cleveland Clinic analysis of nearly 8,000 patients suggests that discontinuing semaglutide and tirzepatide, on average, does not lead to significant weight regain in clinical practice, as many patients later restart the original medication or try an alternative obesity treatment.
In one of the largest real-world studies to date examining obesity treatment use and long-term weight changes after GLP-1 discontinuation, researchers at Cleveland Clinic found that many patients successfully stabilized their weight after one year through alternative treatments and therapeutic lifestyle interventions.
The findings, published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, provide real-world context to previous randomized clinical trials indicating that patients who stopped semaglutide (sold under the brand names Ozempic/Wegovy) and tirzepatide (sold under the brand names Mounjaro/Zepbound) regained more than half of the weight they lost within 12 months.
Hamlet Gasoyan, DS, PhD, MPH, a researcher with Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Value-Based Care Research, led the study.
“Our real‑world data show that many patients who stop semaglutide or tirzepatide restart the medication or transition to another obesity treatment, which may explain why they regain less weight than patients in randomized trials,” Dr. Gasoyan said.
This retrospective cohort study included 7,938 adult patients with obesity or overweight in Ohio and Florida. All patients initiated injectable semaglutide or tirzepatide for obesity or type 2 diabetes and stopped the medication within three to 12 months. Dr. Gasoyan and his research team analyzed what treatments patients pursued next and how their weight changed over time.

Sarasota Memorial Studies Novel Pacing Approach for Heart Failure Patients
March 11, 2026 – Cardiac resynchronization therapy with a defibrillator is a common treatment that uses an implanted device to help weakened or failing hearts beat more efficiently. While this therapy helps some people with rhythm disorders, others may see little to no improvement.
In search of additional treatment options, Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute has joined an international clinical trial, SYNCHRONICITY, evaluating the safety and effectiveness of a new pacing approach for heart failure patients.
Sponsored by Boston Scientific and led locally by Sarasota Memorial cardiac electrophysiologist Antonio Moretta, MD, the study is designed to compare two different pacing approaches – the current standard method of implanting a pacing lead in a vein on the surface of the left lower chamber of the heart (left ventricle) to deliver heart failure therapy (Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, also known as CRT) and an experimental approach called Left Bundle Branch Area Pacing or LBBAP. LBBAP involves implanting a lead in the left bundle branch area of the heart. While the lead is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be implanted in this area of the heart, it has not been approved for the treatment of heart failure.

Kids’ Minds Matter Raises More than $2.4 Million at Signature Gala
10 Year Celebration benefited expanded access and specialized pediatric mental and behavioral health care in Southwest Florida
March 12, 2026 – More than 260 community leaders, advocates and families gathered March 11 at Arthrex One Conference Center for the 10th anniversary Kids’ Minds Matter Signature Gala, raising more than $2.4 million to expand pediatric mental and behavioral health services across Southwest Florida. Founded in 2016 through Golisano Children’s Hospital and Lee Health Foundation, Kids’ Minds Matter is Southwest Florida’s strategic solution to addressing the region’s mental health epidemic by fostering community collaboration, developing clinical pathways to screen and treat patients, enhancing public education, and lobbying for systemic change and sustainable funding to improve access to care.
Co-chaired by Jelena & Onur Haytac alongside founders Susan Goldy and Scott Spiezle, this year’s “Rise to Shine” themed-event celebrated a decade of impact while casting a bold vision for the future of children’s mental health care in the region. To open the evening, Lee Health Foundation System Director of Development Anne Frazier welcomed guests and reflected on the growth of Kids’ Minds Matter since its founding in 2016. Over the past 10 years, the initiative has expanded from a single outpatient office with three mental health professionals to seven outpatient offices staffed by 45 clinicians, along with inpatient providers and dedicated mental health navigators helping families access care.

HSS Studies Highlight Advantages of Osseointegration for People with an Amputation
March 5, 2026 – Three new studies from Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) highlight the use and advantages of osseointegration (OI) for individuals with an amputation, in some instances challenging prevailing beliefs about which patients would benefit. Osseointegration is a surgical procedure that enables a prosthetic limb to be attached directly to the bone of someone who has had an amputation, eliminating the need for a traditional socket prosthesis.
The studies, which looked at safety and outcomes in both femur-level (above-the-knee) and tibia-level (below-the-knee) OI, were presented at the 2026 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in New Orleans this week.
“Osseointegration represents a significant advancement in the field of prosthetics for patients who have had a limb amputation, and interest is building rapidly,” said Jason Hoellwarth, MD, director of research in the Limb Lengthening and Complex Reconstruction Service and the Osseointegration Limb Replacement Center. “At HSS, we have performed more OI surgeries than any other hospital in the United States, treating more than 300 patients since 2017. We have found that osseointegration provides improved mobility, comfort and quality of life for patients when compared to a standard socket prosthesis.”

Researchers develop AI tool to predict patients at risk of intimate partner violence
NIH-funded, automated clinical decision support could facilitate timely interventions for at-risk patients years before they might otherwise seek help.
March 13, 2026 – A team of researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that provides decision support to clinicians by predicting if patients are at risk of intimate partner violence (IPV). Using data routinely collected during medical visits, the team trained a machine-learning model, a type of AI, that was highly accurate in detecting IPV among patients in a study.
IPV refers to abuse from current or former partners that results in serious effects such as potentially life-threatening injuries, chronic pain and mental health disorders. It affects millions of people in the United States — both men and women — at some point in their lives. However, many cases go undetected, because patients can be hesitant to disclose abusive relationships due to safety concerns, fear and stigma.
In their study, the research team led by researchers from Harvard Medical School, Boston, introduced three AI models for IPV detection in healthcare settings, comparing their performance in predicting it.
“This clinical decision support tool could make a significant impact on prediction and prevention of intimate partner violence,” said Dr. Qi Duan, Ph.D., director of the Division of Health Informatics Technologies at NIH’s National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). “Given the prevalence of cases, the tool could be a game-changing asset to public health.”
Many cases of IPV go unrecognized, leading to missed opportunities for timely intervention, according to the study authors. They report that current screening tools capture only a fraction of cases, while clinical and imaging records provide valuable information in detecting IPV risk. Notably, radiologists have an advantage in recognizing the signs of IPV, including the frequency of certain patterns of physical trauma.
The researchers used several years of hospital data from nearly 850 affected female patients and 5,200 unaffected age- and demographics-matched control patients. Because the collection of relevant clinical data varies across healthcare settings, the team designed two distinct AI models, one trained on structured patient data, in table form, and another trained on unstructured patient data from medical notes, including radiology reports. Further, they developed a multimodal model that is a fusion of both structured and unstructured data.
