JULY 12, 2024 – Memorial Healthcare System is proud to announce a significant expansion of its robotic surgery program, with the acquisition of seven state-of-the-art Intuitive® da Vinci Xi® surgical systems being deployed across five of its hospitals throughout south Broward. This strategic investment marks a bold step forward in Memorial’s commitment to enhancing patient care, improving surgical outcomes, and advancing medical education.
With the addition of the cutting-edge da Vinci Xi® systems, Memorial aims to increase access to minimally invasive surgical procedures for patients across the region, offering numerous benefits, including shorter hospital stays, reduced pain and discomfort, and smaller incisions, resulting in less scarring and faster recovery times. This gift symbolizes a major investment in world-class care for patients with colorectal cancer in Tampa Bay and beyond.
July 15, 2024 – The Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Foundation has received a generous and substantial gift from philanthropists John and Susan Sykes to establish a new Center of Excellence in Colorectal Cancer at the TGH Cancer Institute.
“Patients come to Tampa General for world-class care and next-generation treatments and therapies. Thanks to the generosity of John and Susan Sykes, we can further enhance our ability to deliver the highest level of academic-based medicine and cancer care,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital. “John and Susan Sykes share our belief that through innovation and investment, we can improve patient outcomes and propel clinical-driven treatments and life-saving care — care that can only be delivered by the region’s singular academic-based health system and by leading-edge physicians like Dr. Jorge Marcet.”
The Center, to be known as the Susan and John Sykes Center of Excellence in Colorectal Cancer at the TGH Cancer Institute, will support the patient care, education and research mission of TGH and the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. Under the leadership of Marcet, professor in the Department of Surgery, USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, and Medical Director of Colorectal Surgery Services at the TGH Cancer Institute, the Sykes Center of Excellence will focus on providing the highest level of care in the prevention and treatment of colon and rectal cancers, and other complex colorectal diseases. Marcet and his illustrious team are at the forefront of enhancing translational research to move scientific discoveries more quickly and efficiently into practice.

July 16, 2024 – Three faculty members of Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing have been named 2024 Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN). As distinguished nurse leaders, they will be recognized for their substantial and sustained impact on health and health care at the AAN’s annual Health Policy Conference this fall in Washington, D.C. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth/Jackson Memorial as one of the best rehabilitation hospitals in the nation. Lynn Rehabilitation Center ranked 31 in rehabilitation in the 2024-2025 edition of the Best Hospitals report, jumping 14 spots since 2023. Additionally, Lynn Rehabilitation Center was named as a high performing hospital for back surgery (spinal fusion), heart attack, hip fracture, kidney failure, and stroke. A new oratorical category was added this year with youth speaking on the topic “What Juneteenth Means To Me.” Youth competing in the event took home cash prizes ranging from $500 to $1,000 for singing and dancing. President Biden’s Lower Cost Prescription Drug Law Will Allow People with Medicare to Spread Out-of-Pocket Prescription Drug Costs into Monthly Payments
July 16, 2024 – The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), continues to deliver on President Biden’s commitment to reduce the burden of high, upfront out-of-pocket prescription drug costs through the implementation of the President’s Inflation Reduction Act. Today, CMS is releasing the regarding plan outreach and education for the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which aims to ensure that people with Medicare prescription drug coverage, especially those most likely to benefit, are aware of the payment option. Starting in 2025, the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan provides the option to people with Medicare prescription drug coverage to spread the costs of their prescription drugs over the calendar year rather than paying in full at the pharmacy counter each time they fill a prescription. People with Medicare must opt into the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan to utilize the new benefit. Notably, this payment option launches at the same time that all individuals with Medicare prescription drug coverage will begin to have their annual out-of-pocket prescription drug costs capped at $2,000, providing needed financial relief for high prescription drug costs.

July 16, 2024 – In a new analysis of data, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have found that taking a daily supplement containing antioxidant vitamins and minerals slows progression of late-stage dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), potentially helping people with late-stage disease preserve their central vision. Researchers reviewed the original retinal scans of participants in the Age-Related Eye Diseases Studies (AREDS and AREDS2) and found that, for people with late-stage dry AMD, taking the antioxidant supplement slowed expansion of geographic atrophy regions towards the central foveal region of the retina. The study was published in the journal Ophthalmology.
