City of Miami Beach, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and the Center for Combating Antisemitism Take Action Against Antisemitism in Medicine

February 27, 2025 — In a groundbreaking move to address the growing concern of antisemitism in health care, the City of Miami Beach has unanimously agreed to partner with and help fund a new antidiscrimination program developed by the Center for Combating Antisemitism (CCA). Mount Sinai Medical Center will pilot this initiative, which is the first of its kind in the United States. The program aims to support health care professionals at the medical center in diagnosing and addressing the re-emerging virus of antisemitism in medicine.

This innovative program is expected to serve as a model for other medical institutions across the country, as health care organizations recognize the need for comprehensive education on antisemitism, which has been historically neglected in medical training. The program will focus on equipping staff, from medical practitioners to hospital administrators, with the tools to recognize antisemitism, confront it effectively, and maintain the high standard of care and ethics expected in the medical field.

The announcement follows a Miami Beach City Commission meeting where Commissioner David Suarez presented disturbing video clips of nurses, both in the U.S. and abroad, expressing violent antisemitic sentiments, including claims of harming Jewish patients. While these cases are extreme, they highlight a dangerous and troubling trend where health care professionals, medical associations, and medical schools are encountering disturbing incidents of antisemitism, both online and in the workplace.

Baptist Health “Heart of the Game” Event Teaches Student Athletes CPR and AED Training

February 27, 2025 – Baptist Health recently hosted Heart of the Game: CPR & AED Training for student-athletes in Miami-Dade County. The event was at the Baptist Health Training Facility, home of the Miami Dolphins, and is one of the largest CPR training events in the country.  This community event was led by the director of sports cardiology for Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, Eli Friedman, M.D., who taught students CPR and how to use AEDs (automated external defibrillators). While rare, according to the National Institutes of Health, sudden cardiac death is the most common medical cause of death in athletes, accounting for 13% of fatalities. More than 80% of athletes who suffer a cardiac event survive when someone can provide CPR or if there is an AED that can be used to resuscitate someone.

“Every second counts when an athlete suffers a cardiac event. Teaching CPR and ensuring an AED is nearby can mean the difference between life and death,” said Dr. Friedman. “Immediate, effective intervention can restore a heartbeat, prevent severe complications, and give someone the best chance at survival.”

Heavy metals in EV batteries are known carcinogens, pose greater cancer risk for firefighters, owners and communities

Sylvester’s Firefighter Cancer Initiative Researches Elevated Cancer Risk from Electric Vehicle Fires

MIAMI, FLORIDA (Feb. 27, 2025) – Electric vehicles are becoming more popular and are a growing segment of the nation’s automobile fleet. But public health researchers with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are discovering elevated cancer risks for firefighters and community members alike from electric vehicle fires.

“While all fires pose exposure risks, EV fires elevate the risk to firefighters, owners and the nearby community because they are powered by massive batteries containing high concentrations of heavy metals,” explains Alberto Caban-Martinez, Ph.D., D.O., M.P.H., who’s also deputy director of Sylvester’s Firefighter Cancer Initiative. “Many of these metals are associated with increased cancer risk due to their potential to cause DNA damage, oxidative stress and genetic alterations.”

He adds that these metals are often classified as carcinogenic or potentially carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Some of the more common EV battery metals and their associated cancer risks include:

-Arsenic – lung, bladder, skin, liver and kidney cancer.
-Cadmium – lung, prostate, kidney, pancreatic and breast cancer.
-Chromium – lung, nasal and sinus cancer.
-Nickel – lung, nasal and laryngeal cancer.
-Lead – brain, kidney, stomach and lung cancer.

St. Thomas University plans new 99,000-square-foot nursing college building, lobbying Florida Legislature for $3.5M

February  27, 2024 – St. Thomas University announced Thursday that it plans a new 99,000-square-foot nursing college building and it’s bucking the trend of disappointing statewide licensing exam results for registered nurses by earning a 100% passage rate.

The news comes as Florida’s 84.9% first-time National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX–RN) passage rate trailed Guam, the District of Columbia, all 50 states, and the 91.2% national average, according to a new report from the Florida Center for Nursing at the University of South Florida.

Innovative Aneurysm Treatment Saves Lives and Valves of SMH Heart Patients

SARASOTA, Fla. – February 27, 2025 – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s cardiac surgeons are helping patients save their aortic valves, and ultimately their lives, utilizing the Florida Sleeve, a procedure designed to offer a faster, safer treatment option for potentially deadly aortic valve disorders and aortic root aneurysms.

Aortic root aneurysms occur when the aortic root (the closest part of the blood vessel attached to the heart) becomes enlarged. When an aneurysm develops in this location, it can weaken the aorta walls and cause the aortic valve to malfunction, allowing blood to leak back into the heart. Left untreated, the condition often leads to heart failure or potential deadly aortic dissection.

Bradenton resident Steve Ware had been living with an aortic root aneurysm for the past 20 years, with careful monitoring by his medical team. When he also developed a mitral valve disorder, Ware turned to the specialized cardiac surgery team at SMH-Sarasota, where cardiothoracic surgeons Jeffrey Sell, MD, and Kristen Walker, MD, performed a joint operation to repair both valves and deployed a Florida Sleeve to treat his aneurysm before it turned deadly. He was the first patient at SMH to have both valves and aneurysm repaired in a single surgical procedure.

Humanitarian access improves quality of polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip

Polio campaign in Gaza Strip reaches around 603 000 children with better access

February 28, 2025 – Jerusalem/Amman/Geneva–A five-day mass polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip concluded on Wednesday, reaching nearly 603 000 children under 10 years of age with novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) following comprehensive, simultaneous access to all five governorates during the ongoing ceasefire. The campaign was conducted as part of emergency efforts to end an ongoing poliovirus outbreak and prevent further spread in the Gaza Strip.

During this round, an additional 40 000 children were vaccinated as compared to the previous two rounds conducted in September and October 2024, after poliovirus was detected in the Gaza Strip. The ceasefire enabled health workers to reach more children who had missed vaccinations due to displacement during the phased approach, living in areas that previously required special coordination for access, or being unreachable during the October 2024 round due to insecurity in North Gaza, including Jabalia, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanoun.

New 4D Brain Map reveals potential early warning signs of multiple sclerosis

NIH study reveals key players underlying disease onset and repair.

Using an animal model of multiple sclerosis (MS), researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have created a four-dimensional brain map that reveals how lesions similar to those seen in human MS form. These findings, published in Science, provide a window into the early disease state and could help identify potential targets for MS treatments and brain tissue repair.

The researchers, led by postdoctoral fellow Jing-Ping Lin, Ph.D., and senior investigator Daniel S. Reich, M.D., Ph.D., both at NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), combined repeated MRI imaging with brain-tissue analysis, including gene expression, to track the onset and development of MS-like lesions. They uncovered a new MRI signature that can help detect brain regions at risk for damage weeks before any visible lesions occur. They also identified “microenvironments” within affected brain tissue based on observed patterns of neural function, inflammation, immune and support cell responses, gene expression, and levels of damage and repair.

This important educational activity also provides a forum for interaction between individuals involved with all aspects of foregut, metabolic, bariatric and fluorescence guided surgery, as well as the opportunity to converse with colleagues and key opinion leaders.

This year's program will again include an updated extensive review of artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotic surgery, and how surgeons from around the globe are incorporating these tools of the future into their practices today.

Four steps are presented for effective stress management: (1) Identifying early warning signs, (2) Identifying personal sources of stress, (3) Accepting what you cannot change, and (4) Taking action.
