Florida’s Hospitals Contribute $198 Billion to the State’s Economy
February 12, 2026 – Florida’s hospitals contributed $198 billion to the state’s economy in 2023, according to a new report unveiled today by the Florida Hospital Association (FHA). Hospitals provided 343,952 full-time jobs and $34.5 billion in employee wages, salaries and benefits.
Health care has emerged as a driver of job growth nationwide. In Healthcare Is Propping Up the Job Market, The Wall Street Journal reports that health and social assistance employment has grown 12.5% over the past three years, outpacing other sectors. Growth is fueled in part by America’s aging population and rising demand for care, according to the article.
In Florida, that demand translates directly into careers for hundreds of thousands of health care professionals, the backbone of health systems across the state.
“Hospitals are the heart of medical care in our communities and are supporting health care systems to effectively meet growing demand and deliver innovative, world-class care,” said Mary Mayhew, president and CEO of FHA. “The latest economic impact data underscores their contributions – not only of the life-saving care they provide, but also as powerful economic engines driving Florida’s future.”
The economic impact report, “Economic Contributions of Florida Hospitals and Affiliated Healthcare Businesses in 2023,” illustrates the substantial role hospitals play in Florida’s economy and in local economies across the state. Florida’s hospitals saw measurable growth from 2021 to 2023, adding 11% more jobs and 6.8% more value to the state’s economy. They also contribute significantly to the economy as major purchasers of goods and services in regions across the Sunshine State.

Annual Event Raises $600,000 to Support the Conine Clubhouse and Families in Need
February 12, 2026– More than $600,000 was raised during 32nd Annual Conine All-Star Golf Classic where golfers, community leaders and philanthropists recently gathered for an inspiring day on the green in support of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. This exciting day was one filled with golf, hope and connection.
Co-founded by Jeff Conine, former MLB star and Miami Marlin’s Hall of Famer, and his wife Cindy Conine with presenting sponsor the Levitetz Family Foundation, this year’s tournament continued a legacy of giving back that has spanned more than three decades. The Conine All-Star Golf Classic proceeds benefit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s mission to deliver exceptional, family-centered pediatric care to children across South Florida and beyond.
“We are incredibly grateful for the Conine family’s unwavering dedication and support,” said Kelley Morris, President of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Each year, this exciting event continues to grow—just as the needs of the Conine Clubhouse continue to grow as well. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital-Based Database Does That, and Helps Doctors Prepare Accordingly
February 11, 2026 – America’s fastest-growing registry of data on high-risk cardiac catheterization cases is housed at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, but its life-saving impact extends far beyond South Florida.
The Catheterization RISk in Pediatrics (CRISP) registry is a database of more than 10,000 procedures performed at 20 congenital cardiac centers in the U.S. where complications occurred. For each child, an internal score that quantifies risk factors (age, weight, diagnosis, etc.) now helps guide the treatment plans of interventional cardiologists performing transcatheter-based procedures on their own congenital heart patients.
“CRISP assists in predicting when a serious adverse event is likely to occur in the catheterization lab, allowing the team to hopefully avoid the event or be prepared if it does occur,” said Dr. Tom Forbes, a pediatric cardiologist and chief of pediatric cardiac services at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “We’re saving lives by predicting circumstances that are likely to arise and being prepared to expedite care in a way that leads to better outcomes.”

February 11, 2026- The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation received a $30,000 donation during a visit from South Florida native and Major League Baseball shortstop Zach Neto, who recently spent time with pediatric patients at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
The donation represents proceeds from Neto’s Annual Zach Neto Bowling Tournament, which named the Foundation as its beneficiary for the second consecutive year. Born and raised in South Florida, Neto created the annual tournament to give back to the community that helped shape him, supporting children and families facing serious medical challenges.

Baptist Health Opens New Cancer Care Facility in the Florida Keys
February 13, 2025 – Baptist Health hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of its new cancer care center in the Florida Keys. Part of Baptist Health Cancer Care, the center offers a full range of services, including an infusion center for chemotherapy, advanced radiation therapy with a new linear accelerator, CT simulation for precise treatment planning, and on-site medical and radiation oncology. The unveiling reflects the health care system’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible care to residents of the Lower Keys.
“We are incredibly excited to open this new cancer care center in Key West,” said Dr. Leonard Kalman, Interim System Chief Executive of Baptist Health Cancer Care and Interim Executive Medical Director of Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. “This facility represents a major step forward in providing advanced cancer care closer to home, enabling residents of the Lower Keys to receive treatment without traveling far from their support systems.”
Spanning 4,300 square feet, the two-story facility provides multidisciplinary care in a refreshed, welcoming environment. Patients will have access to on-site support services, including nurse navigators, registered dietitians, social workers, and symptom management specialists.

A Familiar Place to Heal: A Miami Beach Nurse’s Journey Back to Broward Health
After spending nearly two decades caring for cardiac patients at Broward Health, Eva Schmon never imagined she would return one day, not as a nurse or visitor, but as a patient.
A retired nurse and Miami Beach resident, Eva worked for 18 years on Broward Health’s cardiac telemetry floor, where she cared for patients recovering from open-heart surgery. Her connection to cardiac care runs deep. More than 25 years ago, she was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse, a condition that initially caused no symptoms and allowed her to continue working, caring for others and living an active life.
For a couple of years, Eva has been seeing Alan L. Niederman, M.D., a board-certified interventional cardiologist with the Broward Health Physician Group, to monitor her condition.

Athletes with “Never Quit” Mentality Face Increased Risk of ACL Re Injury
Confidence alone may not protect athletes from reinjury, new research suggests
February 12, 2026- Researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) found in a new study that athletes who report higher levels of psychological readiness to return to sport following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction may actually face an increased risk of re‑injury. The findings challenge long‑held assumptions about the role of psychological confidence in return‑to‑sport decisions and highlight the need for more comprehensive evaluation methods. The study was presented on today at the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Combined Sections Meeting in Anaheim, CA.
Psychological impairment following ACL reconstruction has long been recognized as a factor influencing an athlete’s ability to safely resume sport. Roughly one in three patients who undergo ACL reconstruction sustain a second ACL injury. While tools such as the ACL Return to Sports After Injury (ACL‑RSI) questionnaire are commonly used to gauge psychological readiness—including emotion, confidence, and risk appraisal—their relationship to actual re‑injury risk has not been well understood.

Uncovering Ancestry-Specific Genetic Risk in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
February 11, 2026 – By examining the genetic roots of inflammatory bowel disease in Hispanic populations, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine researchers Jacob McCauley, Ph.D., and Oriana Damas, M.D., are helping redefine how risk, severity and treatment response may differ across genetic ancestry.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic, immune-mediated condition shaped by a complex interplay of genetics, environment and the gut microbiome. While more than 200 genetic risk loci have been identified, most large genetic studies of IBD have focused almost exclusively on people of European ancestry. This imbalance has limited understanding of how the disease develops and behaves in other populations.
Dr. Jacob McCauley is studying the genetic aspects of inflammatory bowel disease.
In a study published in Gastroenterology, Dr. McCauley, a professor of human genetics within the John P. Hussman Institute of Human Genomics at the Miller School, and Dr. Damas, associate professor of medicine in the Miller School’s Division of Digestive Health and Liver Diseases, joined a national group of researchers to lead the largest genetic analysis of IBD in U.S. Hispanic individuals to date. The findings reveal that genetic ancestry plays a measurable role not only in IBD risk, but also in disease severity and clinical outcomes.

Mayo Clinic : Lung cancer drug offers a surprising new treatment against ovarian cancer
February 12, 2026 — A new study published by Mayo Clinic researchers suggests that ovarian cancer cells quickly activate a survival response after PARP inhibitor treatment, and blocking this early response may make this class of drugs work better.
PARP inhibitors are a common treatment for ovarian cancer and can be especially effective in cancers with impaired DNA repair. However, many tumors eventually stop responding, even when the drugs initially show results. The new research identifies a way cancer cells may survive PARP inhibitor treatment early on, and it points to a potential strategy to block that response.
In the study, researchers found that ovarian cancer cells rapidly activate a pro-survival program after exposure to PARP inhibitors. A key driver of this response is FRA1, a transcription factor that helps turn on genes that allow cancer cells to adapt and avoid cell death.

February 12, 2026 – On June 19, 2025, Shanteria Dixon and James Binion, Jr., welcomed their son, James Binion III, affectionately called “Jay” or “J III”, into the world. Born prematurely at just three pounds five ounces, he faced an immediate and critical challenge due to complications during pregnancy and his early arrival.
Dixon’s pregnancy was complicated by cervical insufficiency, a condition where the cervix opens prematurely without contractions, and chorioamnionitis, a serious bacterial infection affecting the fetal membranes. These conditions ultimately led to James’ preterm birth and respiratory failure.
“Walking into the NICU for the first time was overwhelming,” Dixon, a physician herself, recalls. “But the kindness and professionalism of the staff immediately gave us comfort. We felt our baby was safe 24 hours a day.”

Sarasota Memorial Joins International Study Exploring New Treatment for Advanced Skin Cancer
Feb. 12, 2026 – Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common forms of skin cancer in the United States, affecting more than a million Americans each year. While most cases are found and treated at an early stage, larger and fast-growing lesions have a higher risk of coming back and spreading to the lymph nodes or other parts of the body.
In search of improved treatment outcomes, Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute is part of an international clinical trial enrolling qualified patients with advanced stage squamous cell skin cancer, also called cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC). It is one of the most common types of skin cancer, often found in areas exposed to the sun, such as the head, neck and arms.
Treatment typically involves surgery, with radiation or chemotherapy if needed. The Phase III study is evaluating whether adding the immunotherapy drug cemiplimab before surgery results in better outcomes than the current standard of care.

Spirit of Children fundraiser supports Child Life services at Golisano Children’s Hospital
Annual campaign raises funds to enhance pediatric patients’ experience during hospital stays
Feb. 11, 2026 — Spirit Halloween recently presented a $52,143 check to support Child Life services at Golisano Children’s Hospital, made possible through the annual Spirit of Children campaign held last October. Additionally, Spirit Halloween gifted costumes, decorations, and crafts for a Halloween-themed party at the hospital.
Each year, Spirit Halloween stores offer discount purchases both in stores and online, while donating proceeds to Child Life programs at neighboring children’s hospitals. Since 2007, the Spirit of Children campaign has raised more than $529,000 for Golisano Children’s Hospital, ensuring children receive comfort, preparation, and emotional support throughout their healing journey.
Hospitalizations can be overwhelming for children and their families due to new environments and unfamiliar medical equipment, leading to heightened feelings of fear and anxiety. Child Life Specialists work in tandem with the medical team to help ease that stress using play, education, and creativity to explain procedures, normalize experiences, and offer reassurance. These moments of compassion make a meaningful difference for children during their hospital stay by helping them develop coping skills, express emotions, and feel a sense of control, leading to better emotional adjustment that can positively influence physical recovery.
