LEE HEALTH BEGINS EVALUATION OF CURRENT STRUCTURE WITH COMMUNITY-FOCUSED MISSION IN MIND
SEPTEMBER 28, 2023 — Earlier this month Lee Health shared that it is beginning a process to review its current structure to evaluate the potential benefits of returning to a private nonprofit model from its current structure as a public nonprofit health system. Today, Lee Health is pleased to announce that it has engaged Kaufman Hall, a highly respected health care advisory firm with experience in such evaluations, to perform a comprehensive assessment that will help inform Lee Health’s leadership team, Board of Directors and community as they consider the best path for Lee Health.
Recognizing the growing pressure publicly owned health systems face, the Florida legislature set forth clear guidelines for this process, including a requirement that an independent firm complete a comprehensive assessment before any decisions are made. The assessment is solely focused on gathering information that will help determine the optimal path for Lee Health as it navigates an increasingly complex and evolving health care landscape.

RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS OF DRUG OVERDOSE
SEPTEMBER 28, 2023 – In today’s world, where substance abuse has become a pressing concern, it’s crucial to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a potential drug overdose. Drug overdoses can happen to anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstances. Being able to recognize the warning signs could mean the difference between life and death. Here are some symptoms to watch out for when it comes to drug overdose awareness.
Changes in Consciousness
One of the first signs of a possible drug overdose is a sudden change in consciousness. This can include extreme drowsiness, confusion, or difficulty staying awake. If a person is unable to respond coherently to questions or seems disoriented, it’s time to take action.
Difficulty Breathing
Respiratory depression is a serious symptom of a drug overdose. Shallow or labored breathing, irregular breathing patterns, or even complete cessation of breathing can occur. If you notice someone struggling to breathe or gasping for air, seek medical help immediately.
Unresponsiveness
If a person is unresponsive to stimuli, such as shouting their name or gentle shaking, it could be a sign of an overdose. Unresponsiveness may be accompanied by pale or clammy skin, as well as bluish lips or fingertips, indicating a lack of oxygen circulation.
Vomiting and Nausea
Excessive vomiting, especially if it is persistent and uncontrollable, can be indicative of an overdose. This is a concerning sign as it can lead to choking, dehydration, and further complications.

FAU SEEKS PARTICIPANTS FOR ONLINE HEART FAILURE AND FATIGUE STUDY
Study Spearheded by FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing
September 28, 2023 – Heart failure occurs when the heart cannot pump enough blood rich in oxygen and nutrients to meet the body’s needs, resulting in various unpleasant symptoms that negatively affect quality of life. One of the most common and distressing symptoms of heart failure is fatigue, which is often confused with being tired. Unfortunately, fatigue is much more serious than simply being tired – tiredness is resolved after a period of rest while fatigue is not.
Experts define fatigue as an overwhelming sensation of lack of energy that does not improve after a night of sleep or rest, impacting a person’s ability to function physically and socially. Although heart failure affects more than 6 million Americans over age 20 and is on the rise, fatigue resulting from this condition is underdiagnosed.

SEPTEMBER 27, 2023 – New diagnoses of six major cancer types in the United States fell abruptly in early 2020, coinciding with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to findings from part 2 of the latest Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer(link is external). The volume of pathology reports also declined sharply in early 2020, suggesting that fewer cancer screenings and other cancer-related procedures were performed during that time. Taken together, the findings suggest that many cancers were not being diagnosed in a timely manner during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, likely due to interruptions in medical care.
