Jackson Health System Welcomes David Zambrana as Chief Executive Officer
JUNE 1, 2026- David Zambrana has officially assumed the role of president and chief executive officer at Jackson Health System, following his mentor, Carlos A. Migoya. In his new role, Zambrana will usher in a new chapter of leadership for one of the nation’s largest public academic health systems.
A respected healthcare executive, nurse leader, and longtime member of the Jackson team, Dr. Zambrana brings decades of experience in healthcare operations, patient care, and strategic leadership to the role. His appointment marks a full-circle moment in his professional journey, which began in 1990 as a bedside nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
“Jackson has always been more than a workplace to me; it is home,” Zambrana said. “I am honored to serve as CEO and to lead this extraordinary organization alongside the dedicated physicians, nurses, employees, and other care team members who make Jackson a lifeline for our community every day. Prior to becoming CEO of Jackson Health System, Zambrana served as the system’s president and chief operating officer and previously as CEO of Jackson Memorial Hospital. He’s played a pivotal role in strengthening operations, enhancing patient care, and supporting the system’s continued growth and transformation.

June 1, 2026 – Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute has named fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist Alia Abdulla, D.O., FACS, FSSO, chief of breast surgical oncology in Plantation. Serving as both a surgeon and an advocate in this role, Dr. Abdulla delivers evidence-based, multidisciplinary care while personalizing each treatment plan to align with a patient’s values, goals and lifestyle. Her objective is to achieve the best oncologic outcomes while preserving a patient’s quality of life, body image and long-term well-being.
Passionate about mentorship and the development of clinicians, Dr. Abdulla serves as a clinical assistant professor of surgery at Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and Nova Southeastern University College of Medicine. Prior to joining Baptist Health, she was a breast surgical oncologist at Broward Health Medical Center and a clinical assistant professor of surgery for Broward Health’s general surgical residency program.

University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Names Dr. Pradeep Ramulu Chair of Ophthalmology and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute
Bascom Palmer alumnus and internationally renowned glaucoma specialist Pradeep Y. Ramulu, M.D., M.H.S., Ph.D., will lead the Department of Ophthalmology and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
June 1, 2026 — The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine announced the appointment of Pradeep Y. Ramulu, M.D., M.H.S., Ph.D., as chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, effective August 3, 2026.
One of the world’s foremost glaucoma specialists, Dr. Ramulu is a Bascom Palmer alumnus who returns to lead the institution where his career in glaucoma care was shaped. He brings nearly two decades of transformative clinical, research and educational leadership from the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University. As chair, Dr. Ramulu will hold the Kathleen and Stanley J. Glaser Chair in Ophthalmology.
Dr. Ramulu is a physician-scientist of international distinction whose career has been dedicated to understanding and reducing the impact of glaucoma on patients’ daily lives. Born in Chicago, he earned his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Stanford University with high honors. He then completed his M.D. at Johns Hopkins University, along with a Ph.D. in molecular biology/genetics in the lab of Jeremy Nathans, M.D., Ph.D., an ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute, a glaucoma fellowship at Bascom Palmer and a master’s degree in public health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Broward Health Celebrates Donation from Rick Case Automotive Group President and CEO Rita Case
June 1, 2026 — In Celebration of Women’s Health Month, Broward Health recently recognized Rick Case Automotive Group President and CEO Rita Case for her generous donation to the Broward Health Foundation, which enhanced cardiac care at Broward Health Medical Center.

Broward Health unveiled a plaque at the valet station and the elevator bay in the lobby of Broward Health Medical Center to honor Rita’s generous donations.
During her visit, Rita also donated CPR Anytime Training Kits and visited a female patient in the progressive cardiac unit, presenting her with a CPR kit.
“I want these ladies to take home these kits for their families,” Rita said. “Not only is
heart disease the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., but a study by Duke University School of Medicine showed that women were 14% less likely to receive bystander CPR defibrillation than men. We want to turn bystanders into lifesavers by encouraging people to learn CPR, and by making CPR kits available, we can save lives.”

Broward Health North Hosts Annual Trauma Survivors Day Luncheon Honoring Patients, Families and Care Teams
On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Broward Health North hosted its annual Trauma Survivors Day Luncheon, bringing together around 10 trauma survivors, their families, emergency responders and medical teams to celebrate resilience, recovery and the lifesaving collaboration behind trauma care.
Held in recognition of National Trauma Survivors Month, the event honored former trauma patients whose lives were forever changed by their injuries, while recognizing the physicians, nurses, EMS personnel and rehabilitation teams who supported them immediately upon entering the hospital doors and throughout their recovery journeys.
“Today, we honor the courage, strength and resilience you showed in the face of the unimaginable, and the long, hard road you walked to reclaim your lives,” said Matthew Garner, chief executive officer of Broward Health North, as he addressed the crowd of survivors. “Hearing your stories means the world to our entire team, especially our trauma staff, who pour themselves into their patients but don’t always get to see how the story ends.”

Surgeon Dr. Kimmerle “KC” Cohen joins Tampa General’s nationally ranked
oncology team in the Palm Beaches and on the Treasure Coast.
June 1, 2026– TGH Cancer Institute | Cancer Center of South Florida (CCSF) welcomes surgical oncologist Dr. Kimmerle “KC” Cohen to its practice, effective June 1.
Dr. Cohen is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. She has more than 20 years of experience in complex skin and breast cancer surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, and laparoscopy and robotic surgery. Cohen recently served as a staff surgeon at Tampa General Hospital, specializing in surgical oncology with a focus on breast cancer and management of high-risk patients. Prior to joining Tampa General, she was the staff general surgeon at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where she founded the hospital’s Complex Skin Cancer program.

Florida Blue Names Alvaro Molina Interim South Florida Market President

June 3, 2026 – Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) has once again been named among America’s best hospitals by Newsweek, earning top honors today in its 2026 ranking of America’s Best Hospitals for Specialized Care.

Williams III, MD, as Venue Medical Officer (VMO) for the 2026 World Cup. WTAS: HHS Unveils Sweeping Plan to Combat Lyme Disease and Advance Treatment
On May 29, 2026, U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. announced a series of major initiatives to strengthen the nation’s response to Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. HHS actions include a multi-million-dollar pilot program focused on tick control, up to $2.5 million in innovation challenges, funding for NIH researchers to combat Alpha-gal syndrome, and a public-private collaboration to help patients connect with experienced providers.
Secretary Kennedy delivered these announcements during a press conference in New Hampshire — one of the states hardest hit by Lyme disease — after convening a roundtable with state lawmakers and Lyme disease advocates as part of his “Take Back Your Health” tour.

CMS Launches Nationwide Framework to Implement Medicaid Work Requirements
JUNE 1, 2026 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released an Interim Final Rule with Comment (IFC) requiring that certain adult Medicaid applicants and enrollees must, as a condition of Medicaid eligibility, meet an 80 hours per month work requirement, through employment, education, work programs, or community service. The rule establishes a nationwide operational framework designed to promote economic stability, self-sufficiency, and independence.
“The Working Families Tax Cut legislation made historic changes to the Medicaid program, and CMS is working closely with states to put those changes into action,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “This rule helps Americans build skills and independence through work, education, job training, or community service, creating new opportunities for themselves and their families.”

NIH research clears way for study of experimental treatment for opioid use disorder
IND in effect for human safety study of mitragynine, a kratom isolate.
JUNE 1, 2026- The National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced that its Investigational New Drug (IND) application for mitragynine, the primary psychoactive compound found in Mitragyna speciosa (kratom), has taken effect with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The IND paves the way for an NIH-led phase I clinical trial to evaluate mitragynine as a potential treatment for opioid use disorder.
Researchers at NIH and the University of Florida developed the purified formulation of mitragynine to be used in the trial, as well as the preclinical work that led to the submission of the IND application.
“This IND is a major step toward expanding treatment options for the millions of Americans struggling with opioid use disorder, which has contributed to historically high overdose mortality rates,” said Nora Volkow, M.D., director of NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

Tampa General Hospital Opens TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center
The program provides comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for patients with obesity in the Palm Beaches.
May 18, 2026– Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has launched a new clinic, TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center, to deliver comprehensive, physician-supervised medical care for adults with obesity in the Palm Beaches and on the Treasure Coast. The center is supported by the advanced clinical expertise and coordinated services of Tampa General Hospital, Florida’s premier academic health system.
Dr. David B. Schwimmer, a gastroenterologist board certified in obesity medicine, will serve as medical director and supervise the clinic, which will be located in Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach.
The TGH Weight Management and Metabolic Health Center serves adults age 18 and older who meet one or more of the following criteria:

FATHER’S DAY TAKES ON A NEW MEANING AS COMMUNITY-BASED CONNECTIONS, INC.
PRESENTS FATHERHOOD WEEK 2026 ACROSS BROWARD AND PALM BEACH COUNTIES JUNE 16-28
Multi-day initiative will highlight healing, mental health awareness, economic empowerment, and family strengthening through community-centered events
June 1, 2026 – Community-Based Connections, Inc. (CBCI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering youth development, family strengthening, and community empowerment services to underserved populations, will present Fatherhood Week 2026, a multi-day community initiative taking place June 16–26 throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties. In recognition of Father’s Day, the community program is centered around the theme Fathers, Faith & Family.
The impactful initiative will provide fathers, father figures, and men throughout South Florida with opportunities to engage in conversations focused on mental health awareness, economic empowerment, family connection, domestic violence awareness, mentorship, and community support. It will focus on healing through shared experiences to break generational trauma, promote brotherhood and accountability, and build stronger support systems for fathers and families.

LEE HEALTH: Free Autism Screening for Young Children
May 28, 2026 — Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida offers free monthly autism spectrum disorder screenings for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.
The next screenings will be held on June 10 and June 12 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Road, Suite 102, Fort Myers.
It is estimated that one in every 31 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.
Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.
The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders.
