SOUTH BROWARD HOSPITAL DISTRICT BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS RE-ELECTS OFFICERS
July 22, 2026 – The South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, the governing body of Memorial Healthcare System, unanimously re- elected its officers during its July 22 board meeting.
Elizabeth Justen was re-elected chair, Steven Harvey was re-elected vice chair and Douglas Harrison was re-elected secretary/treasurer.
Additional commissioners serving on the Board include Brad Friedman, Violet Lowrey, Laura Raybin Miller and Diana Taub.
“Our Board of Commissioners provides thoughtful leadership and strategic oversight that helps guide Memorial Healthcare System’s mission of delivering exceptional care to our community,” said Shane Strum, Interim CEO of Memorial Healthcare System. “We congratulate Chair Justen, Vice Chair Harvey and Secretary/Treasurer Harrison on their continued leadership and thank every commissioner for their dedication to strengthening Memorial and improving the health and well-being of the patients and communities we are privileged to serve.”

Justen serves as Chair of the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners, which oversees Memorial Healthcare System, one of the largest public healthcare systems in Florida. Appointed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in 2020 and reappointed in 2025, Justen has been elected Chair by her fellow commissioners each year since 2023. In this role, she works with fellow commissioners and system leadership to support the continued well-being of the communities Memorial Healthcare System serves while advancing high-quality, accessible healthcare.

Yair Katz has been appointed senior vice president and chief operating officer of Nicklaus Children’s Health System, the parent organization of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and its outpatient facilities. Dr. Marcos Mestre has been appointed senior vice president, chief physician executive and chief clinical officer. Katz will oversee operational leadership across the health system, including its three hospitals, clinical institutes, ambulatory network, urgent care centers, and market operations. He will be responsible for advancing operational excellence, strengthening integration across the organization’s growing network, and ensuring a consistent, high-quality experience for patients and families.

JULY 27, 2026 – Expectant parents and family members recently attended Broward Health Medical Center’s inaugural Bump, Baby & Beyond Moms-to-be Fair, a free community event designed to help growing families prepare for pregnancy, childbirth and life with a newborn.
Moms-to-be and their families met with Broward Health physicians and maternity specialists, attended educational presentations and connected with community organizations offering support before and after childbirth. They also toured Broward Health Medical Center’s newly renovated Labor and Delivery Suite, which recently underwent a $4.5 million renovation featuring upgraded patient rooms, advanced technology and enhanced spaces designed to improve comfort for mothers, babies and their families.

Through Tampa General Hospital’s Global Medicine Program, Mercedes Marmorek traveled from Argentina for specialized parathyroid care and found relief from years of symptoms caused by primary hyperparathyroidism.
July 27, 2026 – After years of undiagnosed symptoms from primary hyperparathyroidism, 49-year-old Mercedes Marmorek traveled from Argentina to Tampa General Hospital (TGH) for complex specialized care she could not find anywhere else in the world. Through TGH’s Global Medicine Program, she connected with Dr. Jose Lopez and underwent a life-changing parathyroidectomy August 18, 2025.
For years, Mercedes endured exhaustion, bone pain and anxiety. “I felt like I was living in a fog,” she said. Despite consulting multiple specialists, she couldn’t get answers. Misdiagnosed and sent for psychiatric treatment, her actual condition, primary hyperparathyroidism, was only identified after years of searching for a proper diagnosis. But no surgeon in Argentina could perform the minimally invasive procedure she needed.

July 2026 — According to the American Heart Association, 9 in 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of the hospital die, and more than half don’t receive bystander CPR. CPR — especially if performed immediately — can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. In a collective effort led by Chief People Officer Megan Filoon, Chief Revenue Officer Bill Schafer, and Chief Financial Officer Marilyn Spunar, TBC Corporation is supporting the American Heart Association’s mission to be a relentless force changing the future of health for everyone everywhere by serving as the 2026 Palm Beach Heart Walk chairs.

AHA: Red Cross declares national blood supply crisis; Member Advisory includes resources to assist with donations
The American Red Cross July 27 declared a national blood supply crisis, as the organization said that blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low. The organization said that it has less than a one-day national supply of type O positive blood and is limiting distribution of type O blood to hospitals. This year is the second time in its history that the Red Cross declared a national blood crisis, the first since January 2022.
An AHA Member Advisory released July 28 includes a call to action and resources regarding a July 24 statement from the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies’ Interorganizational Task Force on Domestic Disasters and Acts of Terrorism regarding the U.S. blood supply. The task force urged eligible donors to make and keep an appointment to donate blood as soon as possible. The Advisory includes links for AHA members to share to help eligible donors find their closest blood collection location.

NCH First in Southeastern U.S. to Perform Single-Port Robotic Abdominal Wall Reconstruction for Complex Hernia Repair
July 27, 2026 – NCH has successfully performed the first single-port robotic abdominal wall reconstruction in Florida and the Southeastern United States, marking another advancement in minimally invasive surgery available to patients here in Southwest Florida.
The procedure was performed by Robert Grossman, MD, FACS, General Surgeon at NCH, and team using the da Vinci Single Port (SP) robotic platform to repair a large recurrent incisional hernia through a single incision approximately 1.5 inches in length. Traditionally, this type of complex abdominal wall reconstruction requires a much larger open incision or multiple laparoscopic incisions and often involves a longer hospital stay and recovery.

Dr. Matthew Connor helps patients with excessive sneezing, runny nose
July 27, 2026 – Dr. Matthew Connor, a board-certified otolaryngologist with Precision Healthcare Specialists, has become the first physician in Lee and Collier counties to treat chronic rhinitis with an innovative new system using radiofrequency technology.
Connor, a U.S. Air Force veteran and fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, is now treating patients with Neuromark. The minimally invasive, clinically proven procedure targets the root cause of chronic rhinitis – overactive posterior nasal nerves – by using low-power energy to disrupt the nerves.
The World Allergy Organization estimates that 10-30% of American adults, and up to 40% of children, are impacted by chronic rhinitis, making it the fifth most common chronic disease. July 24, 2026 – HCA Florida Healthcare announces that Samuel “Sam” Boadi has been promoted to chief executive officer (CEO) of HCA Florida South Tampa and West Tampa Hospitals.
Earlier in his career, Boadi served as COO of HCA Florida Lake City Hospital. There, he helped guide significant campus expansion work, including emergency department growth, a new ancillary services building, pharmacy expansion, kitchen renovation and planning for a future bed tower. He also held leadership roles at HCA Florida North Florida Hospital in Gainesville, where he served as vice president of operations and associate administrator. His HCA Healthcare career also includes time with Parkridge Health System and TriStar Health Workplace Partners.

NIH: New blood-based biomarkers predict when ALS symptoms will emerge
A panel of proteins could help match ideal candidates with preventative trials.
July 27, 2026 – Months to several years before amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) symptoms arise, levels of certain blood proteins may dramatically shift. Researchers analyzed data from the long-running, National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Pre-symptomatic Familial ALS (Pre-fALS) study, to identify a lineup of key proteins that may predict the emergence of clinically manifest ALS. By anticipating the arrival of symptoms, investigators could intervene with preventative therapies before the irreversible motor neuron damage that is characteristic of ALS sets in.
“If someone carrying an ALS-associated genetic variant had asked me in the past when they would become symptomatic, I would have struggled to provide a reasonable estimate,” said senior author Michael Benatar, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of neurology and public health sciences at the University of Miami. “These biomarkers give us a far better idea of the timing, allowing us to estimate the time to symptom onset with an average error of about 18 months. That’s something we can work with.”

Mayo: Experimental immunotherapy may help patients with high-risk bladder cancer avoid bladder removal surgery
July 28, 2026 — An international phase 3 study performed at all three Mayo Clinic destination medical centers found that a new immunotherapy helped many patients with an aggressive form of bladder cancer keep their bladder instead of having it surgically removed. The treatment also kept many patients cancer-free for more than two years and caused mostly mild side effects. The findings were published in The Lancet Oncology.
Patients in the study had high-risk bladder cancer that had returned despite standard treatment with bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG). For these patients, surgery to remove the bladder is typically the recommended next step. The new immunotherapy treatment, called cretostimogene grenadenorepvec, produced a complete response, with no detectable signs of cancer in 75% of patients, with many of those responses lasting beyond two years.

-CAR NK cell therapy is a novel immunotherapy made from natural killer (NK) cells engineered to better recognize and eliminate cancer cells
-At UT MD Anderson, CAR NK cell therapies are created from NK cells collected from donated umbilical cord blood
-MD Anderson researchers identified a small population of immature NK cells associated with poorer treatment outcomes
-These immature cells can pick up cancer proteins through a process known as trogocytosis and become false targets, causing therapeutic NK cells to attack one another
-Removing the immature cells before manufacturing improved CAR NK cell function and improved tumor control in preclinical models
July 29, 2026 – The composition of donor cord blood may play a critical role in the success of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) natural killer (NK) cell therapies. A small population of immature NK cells present in donor cord blood can undermine the activity of CAR NK cell therapy by redirecting potent immune cells away from tumors and causing them to attack one another, according to researchers from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

AHA: CMS releases 2025 report on program audits, enforcement for Medicare Advantage, Part D
July 27, 2026 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services July 27 released its Contract Year 2025 Part C and Part D Program Audit and Enforcement Report, outlining key compliance issues identified through Medicare Advantage and Part D audits and enforcement activities. CMS emphasized recurring problems involving prior authorization and appeals processing, beneficiary access to medications and services, care coordination, enrollment and eligibility errors, and oversight of delegated entities. The report also highlights enforcement actions totaling approximately $1.54 million in civil money penalties, most of which stemmed from beneficiary cost-sharing and payment integrity failures. CMS signaled increased scrutiny of plans’ compliance with new prior authorization requirements, including the requirement beginning this year to process expedited requests within 72 hours and standard requests within seven calendar days.

CMS Medicaid Fraud War Room Stops More Than $203 Million in Improper Payments During First 88 Days
50 high-risk providers identified through coordinated federal, state enforcement actions
July 28, 2026 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that enforcement efforts from its Medicaid Fraud War Room (MFWR) stopped more than $203 million in potentially improper Medicaid payments in just under 90 days, highlighting significant progress in protecting taxpayer dollars and strengthening Medicaid program integrity. Since its launch on April 23, the MFWR has coordinated actions against 50 unique, high-risk Medicaid providers identified through advanced data analytics and representing more than $203 million in Medicaid payments subject to federal exclusions and state enforcement efforts.
