BROWARD HEALTH DECREASES MILLAGE RATE REDUCING TAX-ASSISTED REVENUES BY MORE THAN $30 MILLION

September 18, 2023 – In a move that is mindful of the current economic state and intentional in giving back to the community, the North Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to cut taxes. The millage rate reduction from 1.6209 to 1.4307 will result in $30 million less in tax revenues for Broward Health.

“We recognize the financial challenges so many of our residents are currently facing,” said Shane Strum, President & CEO of Broward Health. “Our community was there for us these past few challenging years, but now it’s Broward Health’s turn to return the favor and give back.”

Due to rising revenues and decreased expenses, the Board of Commissioners agreed that it was the appropriate time to make this substantial cut to the millage rate.

As reflected by Moody’s Investors Services upgrading Broward Health’s Revenue Bond Rating to Baa1and its financial outlook to stable due to “durability of margins and liquidity,” Broward Health is in a strong financial position because of expanding its business lines driving patient demand and volumes.

FAU RECEIVES $750,000 PHILANTHROPIC GRANT FOR ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Carl Angus DeSantis Foundation Grant Will Transform the Care of Neurodegenerative Diseases
SEPTEMBER 18, 2023 – More than 720,000 Floridians will be living with Alzheimer’s disease by 2025. Currently, Florida has the second highest prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease in the United States and is the sixth leading cause of death in Floridians 65 and older.

Although the epidemic of age-related brain dysfunction – of which Alzheimer’s disease is a major factor –  is growing at an alarming rate, there is a disconnect between the existing care model designed for urgent care and the progressive nature of this chronic condition, which tends to worsen over time.

To address this widespread health concern, Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine has received a $750,000 philanthropic grant from the Carl Angus DeSantis Foundation to develop partnerships and programs that will establish best practice for coordinated care and research for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). The Carl Angus DeSantis Foundation is a private foundation based in South Florida and is dedicated to supporting programs and organizations that devise strategies for improving human health.

CALL FOR CASE MANAGEMENT PROFILES

Since 2004, we have provided a media platform to the Hospital and Healthcare Community to publicly salute their healthcare family. In these issues, we ask the hospital and healthcare industry to support our organization and newspaper by placing ads that “thank their staff for an excellent job”, and the message is then broadcast to the entire healthcare community in South Florida.

We also encourage the healthcare community to submit two staff profiles per facility location regardless of possible advertising.

In October we are Saluting Case Management Professionals

UNIVERSAL HEALTH SERVICES ACCOUNTABLE CARE ORGANIZATIONS (ACOS) SAVED MEDICARE $79.6 MILLION IN 2022

With seven ACOs across five U.S. states and the District of Columbia, Prominence Health and partnered Clinicians continue to produce meaningful cost savings to Medicare

September 19, 2023 — Prominence Health announces 2022 Accountable Care Organization (ACO) results with over $79 million in savings to Medicare and more than $57 million in earnings for 3,000 participating physicians. This yields a total of over $450 million saved since the establishment of the first UHS ACO in 2014.

“Value-based care is central to our mission at Prominence Health and we are proud of the providers and team members in our ACOs for once again leading the way,” said Kamal Jemmoua, CEO, Prominence Health. “These impressive outcomes reaffirm the potential of providers equipped with the appropriate tools, resources, and technologies to effectively deliver preventive healthcare in their communities.”

ACOs are groups of physicians who agree to reduce costs and increase quality within a value-based contract. Physicians are incentivized with tools to bend the healthcare cost curve, manage utilization, and maintain high-quality care. This is a result of shifting from volume-based to value-based payment structures and better integrating data and communication across the continuum of care. Within the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), providers can earn back part of the savings they generate for Medicare by achieving pre-determined cost and quality goals.

LEE HEALTH USING CLEERLY AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO PREVENT HEART DISEASE AND FASTER PREDICT MANY CORONARY CONCERNS

September  18, 2023 — Fort Myers resident Bob Freiburger has always had an interest in heart health. He has a family history of cardiac concerns, most notably a sibling who died from a sudden cardiac event. Because of that, the seemingly healthy 77-year-old jumped at the chance to take a closer look at his own heart health.

“I love data and I’ve always been interested in the science of medicine,” Freiburger said. “I’m a huge advocate for preventive medicine. This was a no brainer. The technology can save lives and I had a great experience. I think this is something everyone should do.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one person dies every 33 seconds in the United States from heart disease which is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

Many heart attacks can be prevented if plaque in arteries can be accurately identified in advance. Up until now, there wasn’t a viable way to determine how much plaque had built up in a patient’s arteries.

AMA SHEDS LIGHT ON COMMERCIAL PAYER COVERAGE FOR DIGITAL MEDICINE

September 18, 2023- The American Medical Association (AMA) issued new research today examining the status of digital health advancement in the commercial health insurance industry by comparing current coverage across private health insurers and exploring how coverage decisions are made for digitally enabled care services.

“While the United States has entered an era when digitally enabled care is integrated with in-person care, the potential of this hybridized care model is not yet fully realized,” said AMA President Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., M.P.H. “The lack of commercial coverage can be a roadblock or bottleneck to affordable access to digital medicine services for more than half the U.S. population who count on private health insurance. Barriers to clear and consistent coverage policies must be addressed for the pace of digital health progress in medicine to match the technology’s promising potential.”
