Memorial Healthcare System Marks Groundbreaking for Freestanding Emergency Department in Miramar
Memorial Healthcare System celebrated a major milestone with the groundbreaking of its new Freestanding Emergency Department (FSED) in Miramar—an advanced facility designed to expand access to life-saving emergency care for adults and children in South Broward and Northwest Miami-Dade.
Located at the intersection of Miramar Parkway and Red Road, the state-of-the-art 16,800 sq. ft. emergency department will feature
13 private examination rooms, a dedicated pediatric treatment area, a trauma/resuscitation room, advanced imaging capabilities, and an on-site lab—all tailored to provide rapid, high-quality emergency care close to home.
“Today’s groundbreaking is more than just a construction project,” said Interim CEO Shane Strum. “It demonstrates our commitment to investing in the health and safety of our residents, children, and workforce. Last year, Memorial emergency departments treated more than 440,000 patients, and every year that number grows. This new facility will add critical capacity to our emergency care network, ensuring that patients receive exceptional treatment close to home.”
The demand for emergency services in the region continues to rise, with population growth projected to increase by 10% by 2029. The Miramar FSED, along with Memorial’s redevelopment of its Pembroke Pines emergency facility, is expected to serve more than 32,850 patients annually and ease congestion at nearby emergency departments.

Memorial Cancer Institute to Attack Liver Tumors with Ultrasound Waves
April 21, 2025 – The latest advancement in the treatment of liver cancer is liquifying tumors with high-intensity ultrasound waves in a completely non-invasive fashion. The new approach provides additional options for patients with the difficult diagnoses of malignant liver tumors, according to Omar Llaguna, MD, a surgical oncologist with the Memorial Cancer Institute at Memorial Healthcare System.
The FDA-approved technology, known as the Edison Histotripsy System, is expected to arrive at Memorial in May and could immediately benefit hundreds of cancer patients. Llaguna and his colleagues will be among the few specialists in South Florida with the training and equipment required to deploy the non-invasive, limited morbidity approach.
“The ultrasound technology is highly targeted, enabling us to generate a bubble cloud that disrupts and damages cancer cells in the liver, effectively liquifying the mass for the body to eliminate,” said Dr. Llaguna, an expert in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. “Imagine an underwater tornado within the tumor that eliminates the diseased cells while preserving healthy tissue, blood vessels, and bile ducts around it.”

FORT LAUDERDALE FITNESS ENTHUSIAST MOVES TOWARD PAIN-FREE LIVING WITH ROBOTIC-ASSISTED HIP REPLACEMENT AT BROWARD HEALTH
April 22, 2025 – Staying active has always been Gwynne Beatty’s way of life. As a fitness and dance enthusiast and self-proclaimed gym junkie, movement wasn’t just part of her routine, it was an integral part of her lifestyle. But when arthritis in both hips turned even the simplest movements into a struggle, she knew it was time to seek medical help.
“I tried everything, from red light therapy to specialized diets, but nothing worked,” Gwynne said. “I had to face the reality that hip replacement surgery was the best solution.”
Gwynne’s initial search for the right doctor was discouraging, some hardly acknowledged her concerns. That changed the moment she met Ryan Werntz, D.O., an orthopedic surgeon with the Broward Health Physician.
“I could not love him more,” Gwynne said. “He listens to me, takes the time to answer my questions and makes me feel completely cared for. That’s something I didn’t get anywhere else.”
Dr. Werntz explained that Gwynne’s arthritis was advanced, and that surgery was the key to regaining mobility and a pain-free lifestyle. Gwynne was especially intrigued when she learned that Dr. Werntz planned to perform a robotic-assisted hip replacement with state-of-the-art technology.

Florida’s First Pediatric Patient Receives Next-Generation Gene Therapy for Sickle Cell Disease at Holtz Children’s Hospital
APRIL 22, 2025- MIAMI, FL – Doctors at Holtz Children’s Hospital and UHealth – University of Miami Health System have treated Florida’s first pediatric patient with a new gene therapy for sickle cell disease. This treatment, currently available at only a few medical centers worldwide, offers hope to patients suffering from the chronic, painful, and often debilitating condition.
Holtz and UHealth are the first in Florida to administer this therapy, known as Beam-101, to a pediatric patient. The therapy offers an alternative to bone marrow transplants.
Javarian Weatherspoon, 21, of Orlando, started the new therapy as part of the clinical trial in December 2024, with the help of the multidisciplinary care teams at Holtz Children’s and UHealth, including the apheresis team, the cell therapy lab, pathology laboratory, and the pediatric stem cell transplantation teams.
Beam-101 is a new type of gene therapy from Beam Therapeutics that genetically modifies a patient’s own blood cells through a process called base editing. Unlike other types of gene therapies that cut or break a DNA strand, base editing is more precise and can correct or make edits to genes. For patients with sickle cell, their genes can be altered so that they produce a fetal form of hemoglobin in red blood cells, which do not sickle or change shape, lessening or eradicating symptoms of the disease.

Memorial Healthcare System Deploys AI-Powered GI Genius™ to Enhance Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer
April 22, 2025 – Colorectal cancer (colon cancer / rectal cancer) is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, projected to claim approximately 52,900 lives in 2025, according to the American Cancer Society. However, when detected early, colorectal cancer has a more than 90% survival rate—underscoring the critical need for improved screening and detection.
To advance early detection efforts, Memorial Healthcare System has introduced GI Genius™, an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven technology designed to enhance the detection of precancerous polyps during colonoscopies. This innovative tool is now being deployed across Memorial’s colorectal surgery program to improve patient outcomes and reduce colorectal cancer deaths.
“Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet far too many cases go undetected until later stages,” said Michael Dolberg, MD, colorectal surgeon at Memorial Healthcare System. “The GI Genius module enhances what we already do by using AI to identify potential abnormalities during colonoscopies in real time. This is preventive medicine at its finest, helping us detect precancerous polyps sooner and potentially saving lives.”

Cleveland Clinic Awarded More Than $7M From Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to Advance Treatment of MS, Hypertension
April 22, 2025 – Cleveland Clinic has been awarded $7 million from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to improve treatment strategies for multiple sclerosis (MS) and hypertension, also known as high blood pressure.
Daniel Ontaneda, M.D., Ph.D., a neurologist at the Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research will lead a $6.7 million project, “Determining the Long-term Effectiveness of Early Intensive Versus Escalation Approaches for Prevention of Disability in Relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis.”
The project will extend the multicenter DELIVER-MS study, a three-year randomized clinical trial comparing two treatment approaches in MS head-to-head: starting with an early highly effective treatment approach, using more potent therapies, or an escalation approach beginning with safer but potentially less effective treatments and escalating as needed.
With funding support from PCORI, the DELIVER-MS study was initiated in 2017 and followed 800 patients with relapsing-remitting MS who started either an early highly effective treatment approach or an escalation approach to assess the effect on brain volume loss on MRI. Now, as enrollees in DELIVER-MS complete their three-year follow-up, the new PCORI funding will extend the study and shift its approach to assess disability outcomes in this same patient population over the course of nine years. Emma Tallantyre BMBS, Ph.D., from the University of Cardiff in Wales, is the co-principal investigator along with Dr. Ontaneda for the long-term extension, which includes both U.S. and U.K. sites.

Annual Month of Giving campaign brings total local support to more than $700,000
FORT MYERS, Fla. – April 23, 2025 – Generosity was on the menu at Jersey Mike’s throughout March as Southwest Florida locations rallied their community to support Golisano Children’s Hospital. Through the Month of Giving campaign, customers rounded up their purchases at the register, and on Jersey Mike’s Annual Day of Giving, 16 local restaurants donated 100% of the day’s sales. Together, these efforts raised $176,778 to benefit the building of the new Golisano Children’s Hospital Surgery Center.

Annual Report to the Nation: Cancer deaths continue to decline
Overall death rates from cancer declined steadily among both men and women from 2001 through 2022.
April 21 2025 – Overall death rates from cancer declined steadily among both men and women from 2001 through 2022, even during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the 2024 Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer. Among men, overall cancer incidence, measured as the rate of new cancer diagnoses, decreased from 2001 through 2013 and then stabilized through 2021. Among women, overall cancer incidence increased slightly every year from 2003 through 2021, with the exception of 2020. The report appeared April 21, 2025, in Cancer.
Progress in reducing cancer deaths overall is largely the result of declines in both incidence and death rates for lung cancer and several other smoking-related cancers, the researchers noted. New diagnoses and deaths from lung cancer, for example, have declined in both men and women over the past 20 years. Meanwhile, the incidence of cancers associated with obesity has been rising. These include female breast, uterus, colon and rectum, pancreas, kidney, and liver cancers.
The report also shows that new diagnoses of breast cancer gradually increased over the study period, but the overall breast cancer death rate decreased. Cancer death rates in children declined steadily over the study period; those for adolescents and young adults also declined until recently, when the decline slowed and stabilized. From 2018 to 2022, cancer deaths decreased for each major racial and ethnic population group. From 2017 to 2021 (excluding 2020), cancer incidence was stable among men in each major racial and ethnic population group but increased among women in each major racial and ethnic population group. During the same time period, among men, incidence was highest in non-Hispanic Black men, whereas among women, incidence was highest in American Indian and Alaska Native women.

NIH researchers supercharge ordinary clinical device to get a better look at the back of the eye
Comparison of the same patch of retina labeled with indocyanine green and visualized 3 different ways. A) Scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. B) AI-enhanced scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. C) Adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. Arrows highlight the same cell seen in different modalities.
New technique brings retina into sharper focus .
April 22, 2025- Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have leveraged artificial intelligence to transform a device designed to see tissues in the back of the eye into one sharp enough to make out individual cells. The technique provides imaging resolution that rivals the most advanced devices available and is cheaper, faster, and doesn’t require specialized equipment or expertise. The strategy has implications for early detection of disease and for the monitoring of treatment response by making what was once invisible now visible.
“AI potentially puts next-generation imaging in the hands of standard eye clinics. It’s like adding a high-resolution lens to a basic camera.” said Johnny Tam, Ph.D., investigator at NIH’s National Eye Institute and senior author of the study report, which published in Communications Medicine.
Imaging devices, known as ophthalmoscopes, are widely used to examine the light-sensing retina in the back of the eye. A scanning laser ophthalmoscope is standard in eye clinics, but its resolution can only make out structures at the tissue level—things such as lesions, blood vessels, and the optic nerve head. Next-generation ophthalmoscopes enabled with adaptive optics—a technology that compensates for light distortion—can make out cellular features, providing greater diagnostic information. However, adaptive optics-enabled imaging is still in the experimental phase.

NIH study reveals how inflammation makes touch painful
Researchers uncover the cellular and molecular basis for sensing heat and inflammatory pain.
April 23, 2025- Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have discovered clues as to how our bodies turn sensations such as heat and touch into signals sent to the brain — and how these signals can be altered by inflammation to drive pain. The research focuses on the nerve cells in the skin that help us detect the location, intensity, and emotional quality of touch, known as somatosensory neurons. By combining advanced imaging techniques with detailed molecular analysis, the researchers explored how heat and touch activate different types of receptor cells in mice.
“To develop better treatments for pain, it’s critical that we deepen our understanding of the biology behind how sensory signals are received, transmitted, and ultimately perceived by the brain,” said Alex Chesler, Ph.D., co-author of the study and senior investigator at NIH. “Over the past few years, we developed a platform for watching sensation in action, revealing new details about the cells and molecules required and, in this study, how inflammation triggers pain.”
