December 4, 2024 – The Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Foundation’s annual Operation Santa campaign has a very special helper this year: Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs will match donations up to $25,000 to support Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH.

Wirfs, who is one of the captains of the Bucs, made the decision to support the hospital after his family’s experience.

“I am proud to support the Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH through Operation Santa! Earlier this year, my son was born at TGH, and it brings my family and me comfort knowing this level of care is available to everyone in our community,” Wirfs said. “As the only safety-net hospital in Tampa Bay, TGH provides exceptional care to all, regardless of their insurance status or ability to cover payments. Together, we can ensure that every child receives the care and support they need, no matter their circumstances,” Wirfs said.

Filling Out the Roadmap for Faster Drug Approvals

New review outlines how a major Multiple Myeloma research project supported a key regulatory decision by an FDA committee that could cut a decade off the drug development process

December  10, 2024 – A new review published in Blood Cancer Discovery outlines a major multiple myeloma research project that supported a key regulatory decision by a U.S. Food and Drug Administration committee. The decision greenlights a new biomarker endpoint, minimal residual disease, for accelerated drug approval in multiple myeloma, and researchers say it could cut a decade off the drug development process.

How that happened is the topic of a new review co-authored by C. Ola Landgren, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Sylvester Myeloma Research Institute at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and by Sean Devlin, Ph.D., the project’s lead statistician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Using ‘Biological Age’ to Predict Early Colorectal Cancer Risk

New Research Suggests Accelerated Agers May Benefit From Early Screening

December 10, 2024 – New research from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine suggests that one’s biological age, which can be higher than his or her chronological age – a concept called accelerated aging – may predict who’s at risk for developing colon polyps, a known risk factor for colorectal cancer.

The findings, published in Cancer Prevention Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, link accelerated aging to increased early colorectal cancer risk and indicate that those aging faster than their actual age – accelerated agers – may benefit from early colon-cancer screening. Early detection has been shown to improve both treatment options and outcomes for this disease.

December10, 2024 – Sarasota Memorial Hospital – Sarasota Campus was named among the nation’s “Best Hospitals for Maternity Care” in a 2025 report issued by U.S. News & World Report today.

Sarasota Memorial was among just 15% of 2,674 maternity hospitals in the nation that made the 2025 list. Research shows new treatment could delay cancer progression in patients with high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma

DECEMBER 11 2024 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — A new treatment is showing promise for people with high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM). This precancerous condition can progress to active multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. High-risk SMM carries a higher likelihood of progression.

Results from a phase 3 clinical trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at this week’s American Society of Hematology meeting, demonstrated that daratumumab, a monoclonal antibody that targets CD38, a protein found on the surface of myeloma cells, significantly reduces the risk of progression to active multiple myeloma and improves overall survival compared to active monitoring.

NIH Study Finds Tecovirimat Was Safe but Did Not Improve Mpox Resolution or Pain

Study Examined Tecovirimat in Countries Affected by Global Clade II Mpox Outbreak.

December 11, 2024- The antiviral drug tecovirimat did not reduce the time to lesion resolution or have an effect on pain among adults with mild to moderate clade II mpox and a low risk of developing severe disease, according to an interim data analysis from the international clinical trial called the Study of Tecovirimat for Mpox (STOMP). There were no safety concerns associated with tecovirimat.

Considering these definitive findings, the study’s Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB) recommended stopping further enrollment of participants who were being randomized to tecovirimat or placebo. As the study sponsor, the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) accepted the DSMB’s recommendation. Given the lack of an efficacy signal, NIAID also closed enrollment into an open-label study arm for participants with or at elevated risk of severe disease that was not designed to estimate the drug’s efficacy.

Study Compares Robotic-Assisted to Augmented Reality Spine Surgery – Both Enable High Degree of Precision and Accuracy

DECEMBER 6, 2024 – A study at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) comparing robotic-assisted navigation (RAN) to the use of augmented reality (AR) in spine surgery found that both techniques demonstrate excellent accuracy and safety for pedicle screw placement. The research was published online ahead of print in the journal Spine.

Many spinal surgeries require the use of implants called pedicle screws to stabilize the spine, and precise positioning is critical for a successful surgery. “Compared to conventional free-hand techniques, both robotic-assisted navigation and the use of augmented reality have demonstrated superior accuracy,” said Darren R. Lebl, MD, MBA, a spine surgeon and director of research at HSS, and principal investigator of the study. “Our study is the first to directly compare RAN to AR with respect to screw placement precision.”
