BROWARD HEALTH NORTH EARNS SECOND CONSECUTIVE “A” RATING FOR HOSPITAL SAFETY FOR FALL 2024 FROM THE LEAPFROG GROUP
Top grade affirms Broward Health’s continued commitment to excellence in patient care
January 13, 2024 – Broward Health North has earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade for Fall 2024 by The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog. This marks the second consecutive “A” following the spring 2024 Hospital Safety Grade release. In its primary service area, Broward Health North is the only hospital to receive an “A” grade for fall. Leapfrog assigns a grade from A to F to hospitals nationwide based on more than 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
“This second consecutive ‘A’ grade demonstrates our consistency in providing safe and exceptional healthcare to all our patients at Broward Health North,” said Matthew Garner, CEO for Broward Health North. “We have an unwavering commitment to prioritizing patient safety and maintaining the highest standards of patient care.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused exclusively on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that harm more than 500 patients a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH Conducts First Pediatric Transnasal Endoscopy in Tampa Bay Region
Muma Children’s Hospital is the first in the region to employ a minimally invasive pediatric transnasal endoscopy.
January 14, 2025 – Muma Children’s Hospital at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) is the first hospital and academic health system in the Tampa Bay region to begin performing unsedated pediatric gastrointestinal (GI) transnasal endoscopies (TNE) as part of its rapidly growing pediatric gastroenterology Center of Excellence. TNE is an innovative, minimally invasive procedure that allows a young pediatric patient’s upper GI tract to be assessed visually and with biopsies conducted without the need for general anesthesia. A camera attached to a thin, flexible tube is passed through the patient’s nose and into the esophagus, stomach and even into the small intestine to view and sample the patient’s GI tract. The procedure is often used for patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE) who can experience symptoms such as reflux, difficulty swallowing and poor growth.
“Offering procedures, like a TNE, is critical to improve care for our children,” said Nikki Hurley, interim vice president of Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH and TGH Women’s Institute. “While TNEs have been offered to adults for several years, the procedure hasn’t been widely available in the care of young children until recently. Through the collaboration of Muma Children’s Hospital and USF Health, our GI Center of Excellence is leading and transforming the way we care for children in the Tampa Bay area, and ultimately improving outcomes.”
Transnasal endoscopies have proved to be an excellent approach to monitoring chronic conditions that require repeat procedures in the upper GI tract as pediatric patients are often able to return to normal activities immediately after the procedure. The technology has been widely recognized for advancing gastroenterology and is markedly less invasive, more comfortable and requires less time than traditional endoscopies, such as an esophagogastroduodenoscopy, which requires general anesthesia.

Organizations will tackle tobacco, blood pressure, nutrition or cardiac emergency response
January 15, 2025 – Eleven organizations in Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties have received a “Culture of Health” mini-grant for community projects designed to improve health through blood pressure control, nutrition security, tobacco-free and vape-free environments, and cardiac emergency response plans including CPR training and AED placement. The grants are sponsored by HCA Florida Healthcare, supported by the HCA Healthcare Foundation, and by Palm Health Foundation.
This was the third year the American Heart Association Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast offered these mini-grants, and 36 organizations applied to participate. “Every year, I’m impressed by the number of area nonprofits that are focused on community health work, and by how effectively they’re reaching their target audiences,” said Ellice Martinez, assistant vice president, community engagement for HCA East Florida Healthcare. “The projects this series funds are specifically selected because they’re well thought-out, they’ll help move the needle on improving health, and they’re sustainable, so the work can continue when the grant dollars are spent.”

Having a Mocktail Instead of a Cocktail Could Reduce Your Risk for Developing 7 Known Types of Cancer
Sylvester Cancer Experts Offer Mocktail Recipes and Other Tips on Avoiding Alcohol Without Feeling Deprived
MIAMI, FLORIDA (Jan. 15, 2025) – The U.S. Surgeon General has recommended that alcoholic beverages carry cancer risk warning labels, citing a growing body of research that shows alcohol as a group 1 carcinogen. But more than half of U.S. residents don’t know that alcohol consumption increases their risk of developing cancer, or that it’s the third leading preventable cause of cancer after obesity and tobacco use. A fact health experts hope people will now take more seriously.
Tracy Crane, Ph.D., RDN, director of lifestyle medicine, digital health and cancer prevention at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System, has long advocated for healthy lifestyle choices. “Now we finally have enough hard evidence to make this statement,” she says, adding that curbing alcohol consumption will not be easy. She believes the campaign against tobacco smoking can provide a blueprint for the way forward. Just as smoking has gone from hip to unfashionable, so can drinking alcohol.
“Alcohol is part of our culture, part of the social fabric,” Crane acknowledges. “It’s been around forever. There are clubs and hobbies that exist around it. So, it’s going to take time for people to embrace this.”

NAACOS Welcomes ACO Growth in 2025
Attributed to Aisha Pittman, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs of the National Association of ACOs
“NAACOS is encouraged by the continued growth of accountable care models, as highlighted by data released today by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). More than 53 percent of beneficiaries in traditional Medicare are now part of an accountable care relationship, giving physicians the flexibility to deliver tailored, patient-centered care that prioritizes keeping Americans healthy. This progress demonstrates that when providers are empowered to manage costs and focus on outcomes, they can achieve high quality outcomes and drive innovation.
“We look forward to working with CMS to continue to expand these models by reducing regulatory burdens, enhancing program sustainability, and supporting provider-led innovation.”

NIH-funded study finds cases of ME/CFS increase following SARS-CoV-2
JANUARY 13 2025 – New findings from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER(link is external)) Initiative suggest that infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, may be associated with an increase in the number of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) cases. According to the results, 4.5% post-COVID-19 participants met ME/CFS diagnostic criteria, compared to 0.6% participants that had not been infected by SARS-CoV-2 virus. RECOVER is NIH’s national program to understand, diagnose, prevent, and treat Long COVID.
The research team, led by Suzanne D. Vernon, Ph.D., from the Bateman Horne Center in Salt Lake City, examined adults participating in the RECOVER adult cohort study to see how many met the IOM clinical diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS(link is external) at least six months after their infection. Included in the analysis were 11,785 participants who had been infected by SARS-CoV-2 and 1,439 participants who had not been infected by the virus. Findings appear in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
ME/CFS is a complex, serious, and chronic condition that often occurs following an infection. ME/CFS is characterized by new-onset fatigue that has persisted for at least six months and is accompanied by a reduction in pre-illness activities; post-exertional malaise, which is a worsening of symptoms following physical or mental activity; and unrefreshing sleep plus either cognitive impairment or orthostatic intolerance, which is dizziness when standing. People with Long COVID also experience some or all of these symptoms.
