February comes from the Latin word februa, which means “to cleanse.” Cleaning can be a main step of the conservation process. Conservation requires attention to detail, understanding of numerous subjects including chemistry, art history, the medium at hand, composition, etc. as well as a profound respect for the history and integrity of the artwork. If the work is to include conservation cleaning, harmless cleaning solutions are developed and applied to the paint and finishes, removing incompatible varnishes and overpaint, years of accumulated filth, and helping to restore colors to their original brilliance.
