May Newsletter: The Holy Ghost in Art

In Christian Art, the dove is an ancient symbol derived from Jewish tradition and adopted in the Old and New Testament. The white dove is typically understood as a symbol of peace and purity. In the story of Noah and the flood, the dove returns to the ark with an olive branch as a token of peace. Under the law of Moses, a pair of turtledoves were offered at the temple for the purification of a newborn child foreshadowing the institution of the Sacrament of Baptism.

A greater understanding of the Third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Ghost, is developed in the New Testament through accounts of the Annunciation, Baptism of Christ, Pentecost and so on. In addition to the qualities of purity and peace, the dove symbolizing the Holy Ghost represents the gifts bestowed by the grace of the Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.

Trinity Symbol Conserved

In church decoration and ornamentation, the Spirit is an important symbol that intends to provide the visual unity of the Trinity professed in the teachings of the Bible and the traditions of faith. Following the tradition of Christ’s Baptism and Pentecost, the depiction of the Holy Ghost is often shown as a dove descending from above.

The following are different depictions of the Holy Ghost that Canning Liturgical Arts has either conserved, restored or new commissions for church interiors across America.
